Until recently, my earliest Gosney was William whose undocumented arrival in Va. from Scotland I had believed. This William died in Culpeper Co., Va. with a will dated in 1767 and was married to Mary. According to info given to me, their children were Richard, Mary, Betty, Temperance, Henry, John and William.
William was granted 400 acres on the Mattapony River in 1742 and sold in 1746.
I have recently found a mention of an earlier Gosney. In the Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Vol. II, King and Queen county, Records concerning 18th cent. Persons, 4th Collection, Page 294
"Deed" Waller to Walker 1707. Archives Division Book 1 1702-1707 p. 347 20 June 1707 John Waller of King William Co. sells to John Walker of King and Queen Co. part of a lot in Delaware Town at West Point, Va. formerly bought from Mr. Philip Whitehead....Side of Mattapony and on Capt. Richard Wyatts lot and joyning Jno. Wallers part towards Paminkey River. Witnessed by HENRY Gosney, William X Major, Richard X fford.
Culpeper Co. was formed from King William County.
As this Henry was also in the Mattapony River area, and William named one of his sons Henry, I have to rethink and wonder if William was preceded by Henry Gosney. It is possible that William was born in Scotland and Henry was his father moving to Va. sometime prior to 1707.
Anyone have any thoughts or knowledge of this Henry of 1707?
Joyce
