Years ago my aunt did some research on our Gothard line, and the Name Larkin Gothard was on it, I have not seen the name Larkin much (doesn't to seem to be a popular name) so you have me wondering if there could be a connection. I live in Southern Oklahoma, but My grandparents I beleive were not orginally from here, they may have moved from California or Texas.

I am very interested in receiving any information about these Gothard's. My ggggrandparents were James & Minerva Gothard, found an 1880 cencus listing them with two children Nancy and John. Found another birth record for a daughter named Sarah E Gothard b:5/10/1881
I'm trying to figure out if George Gothard Sr. is related to my James Gothard and Minerva.

My husband has a"Hawkins" family in his tree but they come from Whittlesey, cambs,could this be the same family do you think?????.

It was James Hawkins who married an Anne and had children James 1688,John 1692,Thomas 1694 died 1695, Tomasine 1697 and another Thomas 1708

My Gothard line begins with Richard Gothard b 1781 Isle of Ely, Cambridgeshire m. Ann Thorn b 1791 Cambs in 1810; children Richard b 1809 and James b 1831 (others unknown).

Richard Gothard #2 m. Elizabeth Simper b. 1816 on 26 Dec 1837 at Ely Holy Trinity. Their 7 children; Richard Simper 1840, Maria 1841, Adelaide 1843, Sarah Ann 1845, Charlotte 1846, Eliza 1848, William 1850.

Maria (my g-g-gm) had a child (out of wedlock, I think), Richard William Gothard on 9 jan 1871 in Chesterton Cambs. She then went on to marry Reuben Smith 12 May 1874 in Fletton, Huntingdon and they had 5 more children.

Richard William Gothard Smith (my g-gf) maried Maria Wilmot (b. Apr 1871 Bletsoe Beds) on 03 Feb 1871 in Streatham, London. I have records of R W G Smith until his discharge from the army at the end of WWI when he did not return to his family. He may have reverted to his birth name and become a steward on a ship travelling between Britain and the US.

Long post but we may have some connections between our Ely Gothards.

Burgess GOTHERD, son of John and Mary GOTHERD, was born 1814 in Waterside, Ely Holy Trinity, Cambridgeshire. He had two siblings that I know of: Caroline GOTHERD, born 1817 and Maria GOTHERD, born 1820. He died December 28, 1857 in New Barns Road, Ely Trinity under the name of GOTHARD.

Burgess married Sarah COOPER on May 15, 1836 in Ely St. Mary, Cambridgeshire. (On the Parish Register for the marriage the entry is GODDARD, and the name continues as this on census entries).

Burgess and Sarah’s children were entered in the Civil Registration for England and Wales as GOTHARD. However, they were all baptised and married as GODDARD.

Children:
Sarah Ann b. 1837 m TUNGATE in Paddington, London..
Henry b.1840 m SCOTT in St Luke, Middlesex.
Mary Ann b.1843 m TINGEY in Ely, Cambridgeshire.
Maria b. 1845 m MURFITT in Ely, Cambridgeshire.
John b. 1848 m NEWMAN in Ely, Cambridgeshire.
James b. 1852 m SAUNDERS in Doddington, Cambridgeshire.
Burgess b. 1856 m FALLOWS in Ely, Cambridgeshire.

Would be interested to hear of anyone with connections to the above names. I have a lot of information on the family.

did I ever reply to you on this? I haven't been able to do any family history research in awhile, but I'm hoping to go to Tennessee later this year. I'll be reviewing all of my research before I go.

I haven't been able to trace my Gothard line back to the Gothards in Sale Creek. I know we're connected but I can't prove it yet.

I found a Milo Gothard listed in the 1860 census. He was 1 years old and the son of Emeline Gothard. If this is your Milo he was the brother of my GG Grandmother Catherine Gothard. I looked through my records and find no other information for Milo.

Why do you think Luther was born in Tn.? I have very little information myself, but the very little I do have believe is all correct. Maybe together we can find a link to move ahead.

I have no proof yet but I believe that they were Thomas Jefferson Gothard, Mary E. Gothard and on other brother, but off had I can't remember his name and I can't locate the paper I wrote it on. When I find it I'll let you know.

This is the closest I have come to finding a match. The only thing wrong here is that I have Luther as being born in Alabama, but of course, that could be wrong. Do you have any names for Luther's siblings? It would be wonderful if this is a true match.

John F. Gothard,
I have a Robert Gothard born in Virginia in 1805 and died in Gallia County, Ohio, USA on January 11, 1873. He had two wives and many children. First wife's name was Sarah Page and the second one was Eliza Shoemaker. His parents names were John & Joanna Gothard Let me know if that matches anything you might have.

The Gothards that you have mentioned are my husbands family and some of us have found some information on them. Possibilities of the John that married Polly had siblings named Sarah, Martha, and possibly a brother. Not for certain. I wrote to Bassett Branch Historical Center in Virginia and they sent some info. Hope this helps. I am not certain how long the family had been in the states.

I currently have no connection between Robert and George Gothard of South Carolina who I think is my gggg grandfather. Do you know who Robert's siblings and/or parents are? If you have any information on Gothards that migrated from Virginia to South Carolina it would be a great help.

James - I'm searching for the same information. I can trace my line as far back as about 1797 in South Carolina (I suspect it goes from there to Virginia - but I can't prove it). I've been trying to convince the Gothard menfolk to participate in DNA testing, but I've not been very successful so far. I believe the only way we're going to be able to connect the various Gothard "branches" is through DNA. (I know of very early Gothards in Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina, there are hints of others). If ANY GOTHARD surname menfolk out there would like to participate, or would just like additional information, contact me at John@Gothard.com.

An interesting story Catherine... my Gothard family of Cambridgeshire, England have been rumoured to be Swiss.

I cant find any evidence for this although my late Great Grandmother, whose long 104yr life gave her quite a bank of knowledge to share with me, seemed to recall the name being pronounced in different ways.

I also have a "Goltrip" surname in my ancestry which takes the form of "Gaultrip", "Golthirppe" over the years. I wonder whether these are all the variants of Gothard.

If the family were Jewish, then at some point this was changed as the last ancestor of mine - Mary Gothard who died in 1931 was not Jewish, nor were her siblings, or parents.
