Hannah Gott, Marks & Prebles of Hancock Maine

Hannah Gott (b. 1812), daughter of David and Joanna (Carter) Gott, lived in Hancock Co., Maine, with a few years in Camden, NJ. She had a twin sister Joanna. She married Galen O. Marks in 1832. In 1841, Galen, Hannah, and their two children (so far) all officially changed their surname to Preble, according to Maine court records. Galen appears to have gone by the name Preston Preble afterwards, and their children and grandchildren were all Prebles. Does anyone have any information on the name change and the reason why? Thank you.

William Gott Morton chr 1837 Leeds Yorkshire

I am trying to find out where the name Gott entered the Morton family. This family had a habit of using maiden names of mothers and grandmothers as middle names for the children.

William Gott Morton was christened at St Peter's Church, Leeds on 6th March 1837. His parents were William Gott Morton and Jane.

Any further information on this family would be appreciated.

Thanks
Steve.

Would like to hear from all of you out there with connection to the Gott family. There were some in the New England states, Ohio, Maryland, Kentucky, Missouri, Indiana and Iowa, where the wife of William Nichols Gott's wife, Jane, and eight of her children traveled to in 1840.

It was a Charles GOTT family with 10 children who lived there in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

I checked the archives of this Board and I don't see the family mentioned. Eliza's mother I believe was Mary born about 1815 but not sure .In the 1841 census there were 3 Gott females together at the workhouse Mary 25 b. lincs . Elizabeth 15 b. lincs. and Eliza 6 b. lincs . In the 1851 census there were just Mary single 36 servant and Eliza single 15 paupers b. Whaplode . Now I know Elizabeth was a grand-daughter of Erasmus as he was ordered to maintain her on 10/5/1841 at the workhouse . What I would like to know is who are Elizabeths and Mary's parents and is Mary's father Erasmus also is Mary Eliza's mother . Regards Jed (jed.stoner@tiscali.co.uk )

Bev, Sorry I haven't visited this message board for such a long time. So have probably not answered your question. I've read somewhere these books are considered rare and had to come by. I would like to go back to Bowling Green, KY and spend more time in their genealogy library. They might have the books. I've gotten copies of the grants and where the land was, but don't know what the grant was for, like for service in the Rev War??? That's what I'm after, I'd like to become a DAR. Supposedly my Sutton Gott was a Rev soldier, still trying to prove it. His name is on the DAR/SAR monument in the courtyard of Bowling Green, KY. When I asked what paperwork was proof of his rev service, the SAR person quoted a page in a book, saying Sutton ran away from home at age 15 to fight in the Rev War and was in the Battle of Yorktown.
"Scidey" Gott?

Hi all;

I've been trying to do a little research on my son's line. All I have to start with is a few handwritten notes that were written by someone a while back.

It says that William Henderson, born 1807, died 1875, had a wife with the unlikely name of "Scidey Gott". I have a birth year of 1802 and a death year of 1868, but no other information on either of them.

Their son Simon Henderson married Mary Ann Hall, and they had a John Henderson in 1887. The next generation, Jean Tryphena Henderson, was born in 1886 in Melville, Caledon Twp, Peel, ON, Canada. So, it's possible that all these people were in Canada, but I don't know at all.

Thanks for any help! Unless "Scidey" is someone's terrible misspelling of "Sadie", I can't imagine how that could be correct.

Kirsten

Re: Gotts from England/scotland to MD/VA

My family information on the Gott family begins with Richard Gott (Born: 1/17/1617 or 1618) in Skipton, Yorkshire, England. He died by 2/15/1661 or 1660 in Anne Arundel County, MD. His parents were Christopher Gott and Elizabeth Ward. His spouse was either Susanna or Susan, but I don't have any other information on her, other than she may have been married to a Henry Hooper at some point in time. Other info: Richard Gott immigrated to Maryland in April, 1650, along with his wife, two of his children and four servants. In 1650, received grant for 600 acres in the Manor of Baltimore called “Ram Gott Swamp” on west side of Chesapeake and north side of Herring Creek in Maryland. For more than 100 years, descendants lived in Anne Arundel County and owned same land. On 7/22/1658, assigned 200 acres to son-in-law, Alexander Gordon (see Liber Q folio 70, Annapolis, MD); on 1/3/1659, assigned all interest to Gordon. Will dated either 11/20/1660 or 11/28/1660. Present day Deale, Maryland, sits squarely within Ram Gott Swamp. Hope that's helpful!
Does anyone who posted several years ago about Gotts in Missouri still come here? I am a Missouri Gott. My line is Albert Earl Gott (gf), George Washington Gott (g-gf), Robert Lee Gott (gg-gf), Thomas Gott (ggg-gf), Robert Gott (gggg-gf). This line began in Orange Co, NC and moved to Shelby Co, KY, then to Montgomery Co, IN and finally to Daviess and Grundy Co, MO. I was born in Grundy Co, MO. If anyone would like to compare or share information please email me at mikegks@gmail.com.

Other Gott related families I am researching are Provance, Miles, Stout, and Corn.

I'm trying to go back from Robert Lee Gott, b 1828 in Montgomery Co, IN. I believe his father was Thomas Gott, b 1790 in Shelby Co, KY. I believe his father was Robert Gott, b 1745 in Orange Co, NC. Robert (1745) had a son Robert, b 1781. The 1745 Robert had 2 wives (according to his Rev War pension request), the second was Lydia Nichols (she may have been a Maddox originally). I think this line goes back to VA and before that MD. I am a Gott also, another descendent of Robert (1745).

Looking for information on three sisters born to John J. Gott & Harriet Lotheridge (sp?) in Warren County, Kentucky. Does anyone have access to marriages about 1900 with any of these girls?

In 1870 census, they were :
Sally F. age 2 and Suette age 8/12

In 1880 census, apparently Harriet had died and John J. Gott married Harriet's sister, Melissa Elizabeth (sometimes seen as Lysse).

The girls were listed in the 1880 census as:
L? F. age 11, L. E. age 10 and L. E. age 8

John J. Gott & Lysse and their children went to Crosby County, Texas about 1890; however, I don't believe three sisters left Kentucky.

Any help would be appreciated.

Gotts from England/scotland to MD/VA

I have 4 names - Ezekiel, Thomas, Robert, William and Richard! One of them came around 1648 -1660. My family came from Anne Arundel Co, MD to Mont. Co in 1792. The plantation on the Chesapeake Bay was called "Ramsgate" or Ramsgotte". We have always believed that the Richard Gott who came from Anne Arundel County in 1792, with his wife Ellen, was a direct descendant of an original Richard Gott who came from England around 1650.However, there was a Thomas Gott (possibly father to the original R. Gott) who came to Jamestown around that time. He may have been a puritan. However, we always felt that Richard was a Catholic who came to MD to safely practice his religion. To add to the confusion we have a notation supposedly from a family bible that said the Mont. Co. Gotts were decended from an Ezekiel Gott of Scotland! I can find no record of him.

Our family oral tradition has it that our Gott ancestor was born illegitimately to Margaret Tudor, Queen of Scotland, sister of Henry VII!!! Has any one else heard of this? Thanks

I have not heard this information but have tons of information on the Gott's. I'm a direct decendent of Robert Gott born 22 July 1745 in Hillsboro, Orange Co., NC.
I've always believed this Robert was tied back to Maryland and still trying to prove this, my e-mail is ron.gott@vosdic.com - I was born in Montgomery County In. and now live in Oklahoma at the ripe old age of 58. Hope to hear more from you.
