Gottfried? Bohemia? prior to 1800

Anyone have Gottfried ancestors from Bohemia? I have hit a wall.

My ancestor Joseph Gottfried b. 1814 oldest son of John Gottfried & Anna Repka immigrated to US in 1849. Joseph m. 1853 Mary Pecka b. abt 1836 in Bohemia. They eventually settled down to farming in southwest Indiana after being in MO, OH and WI.

I found a record that he may have arrived in NY via Glasgow, Scotland. Census records all say Bohemia as homeland, but native tongue was German. So, I assume the family were Germanic and not Czech.

HELP!!

Jason Walley
Hinde, Channah, Beneisch Gottfried from Wisnivchek, Austria now Ukraine

I am looking for any relations to the people mentioned in my subject. I am the granddaughter of Hinde (Hilda)Gottfried who came to the USA in 1906 on the SS Patricia. Her sister was Channah (Anna) and her brother was Beneisch.
My grandmother, Hinde Gottfried married Nathan Shoenfeld.
My aunt, Channah (Anna) married Max Wagman. Beneisch Gottfried married Gussie Levy. These people all settled first on the Lower East side of New York, and then they moved to Chicago about 1920. We have many descendents. I believe their mother's name was Reise. She never came to the United States. Reise may have remarried and her husband's last name was Pest.
If you have any information I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.
Robin Ribakoff
Rob7333@pacbell.net

Not sure if Evelyn, my great-aunt, followed up, but given the reply to your Fischer relative, it seems the connection is Brukenthal where our family is from. If you can pass info about Catherine and her parents I can check if they're in our tree.

Just wondering if Patty and Vickie are still reviewing this post. I would love to connect with you. Clara and I are first cousins and Vickie and I are cousins a couple times removed. I met Vickie about 10 years ago, but haven't been able to get back in touch with her.
She had a great picture of Mary Pecka Gottfried standing in front of their cabin in Indiana. She also knew lots of stories about them all as she stayed with direct decendants in that cabin a few times.
Vickie or Patty if you are still out there please contact me.
cjwalley@pacbell.net
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Greetings, Karen. This I know--August W was the son of Phillip Georg Jacob Wedesweiler, who was the son of Jakob W. I believe this Jakob was a brother of Johann Joseph W. While Johann immigrated to Australia, Phillip Georg Jacob W immigrated to the U.S.A. His son August, my grandfather, lived the rest of his life in N.Y. and California, his profession was engineer and residential contractor. He passed away in 1948.

Just thought I'd pass along my information. In locating where Emma's father (Joseph Gottfried) was buried, (St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Cincinnati), we discovered Emma on the same plot...married name (Schoeder)....along with an infant son, Karl Schroeder. She died in 1894 at the age of 22 and her son died in 1993 at the age of only one month, fourteen days old. Sounds sad! Since she died so young, I guess that's why she was never talked about in our family. Anyway, my mystery is solved, but I still feel there's got to be some connection between our two families. Keep in touch if you learn anything.
Vickie..I've been trying to get in touch with you by phone with no luck. Anyway, very eager to get back to you regarding our two Emma's. Our Emma's father's could have been cousins...it seems a lot of Gottfrieds named their sons "Joseph." Our Joseph (Emma's father) used his middle name,Frank (Franz)...probably to avoid confusion! We only found out his name was actually "Joseph" from the census records. Anyway, if you still wish to explore this, please e-mail me at CMS15@AOL.com. Perhaps we can puzzle this out further. I'd love to see a copy of that letter!

(name later changed to Godfried)
She was a tailoress at 169 Pleasant Ave., Cincinnati, in 1890/91. Her father's name was Joseph and her mother's name was Anna. I can find no further reference to her in any census or death index after 1891. She obviously married and acquired a different last name.

Vickie, this is becoming more and more mysterious. I have houseguests now until about mid March so am somewhat busy at the moment, but when I get a chance I will call you. Perhaps we can begin e-mailing and uncover this mystery.

My Emma, born in 1871, was born to Joseph and Anna (Liska) Gottfried (spelling later changed to Godfried)in Cincinnati, Ohio. They had two children--Joseph, who was my husband's grandfather, and Emma. The 1880 census lists them originating from Austria, but my mother-in-law once told me they originated from Bavaria. Bavaria was, of course, under the Austrian empire at that time.

Also, on the 1880 Cincinnati census, Joseph Sr. is listed as a taylor by trade (my husband's grandfather was also a taylor). Then, ten years later in the 1890 Cincinnati Directory, Anna is listed as a widow of Joseph, and Emma is listed as a Tayloress at the same address. After this, we know nothing of Emma.

It is highly conincidental that because both of our Emma's are from Cincinnati there must be a connection somewhere. I have found a great number of "Joseph" Gottfried's" on the Mormon site originiating from Rothau, Kraslice,Chezcholovakia...which of course was at one time Bavaria. I'm sure we're just one "big happy family."

In any case, I'll be in touch and perhaps we can solve this mystery.
Just realized I said Bavaria instead of Bohemia. I always get those two "B" countries mixed up. We have another set of ancestors from Bavaria which is why I tend to make that mistake. However, the Gottfried's came from Bohemia. Anyway, will be in touch soon and see if we can't "link" something up.
My German ancestors, who were Roman Catholic, left Bohemia in 1783. They were known as Bohemian Woodcutters, despite their German blood. In 1783 they established the German settlement of Freifeld (a.k.a. Treufeld), a village of less than 250 people in Galicia. Freifeld was located 6 kms. NNE of Cieszanow, where they attended the Roman Catholic Church. This area is now in Southeastern Poland, close to the Polish-Ukrainian border. My German Great-grandmother, Maria Molz married Basil Cyca and immigrated to Saskatchewan ( Lemberg ) in 1903 ( my grandfather Martin Cyca was 2 ). Living in this area of Galicia, the family, who spoke German at home, were fluent in Polish, Ukrainian and Yiddish ( to a lesser extent ).

Nettie Gottfried Goldberg

I am looking for information on Nettie Goldberg from Brooklyn, NY. She was sister of Barney, Samuel, Dora and Rachel Gottfried. I believe her husband was John, but not positive. She has to have died after 1983, as she survived Dora Gottfried-Kabakoff who died May, 1983.
