I have been hired to find out more information on my cousin's husband's family. At this point, we do know that his grandparents were Adolph and Alfreda Gottlieb. His mother's name was Lena and I don't need more information on her. But, I do need information on her siblings-- Emanuel, Izzy, Bertha and Ernst. The family was later transported to Germany during the Holocaust.

Lena married Walter Tallert and had son Harry. (Harry is my cousin's husband)

The Frieda Lapper to whom I am related to was not a nurse. She was a jewish immigrant who came to this country in the early 1900's as an indentured servant to another jewish family. Her maiden name was muskin. She lived in Toronto, Canada for many years with her sister (my grandmother) and her family. (Betty Gottlieb was Frieda's neice, my grandmother's daughter.) She married briefly in the 1950's to a man with the last name of Lapper. They divorced after a few years with no children. Frieda lived in NYC for many years with her sister, Esther. She returned to Toronto in the 1980s when her health declined. Since she would not have had the name Lapper until the 1950's, I think you may be on the wrong track.

Hello
I am researching Gottlieben's from Australia.
My descendant Theodor Mathen Frederick Gottliebsen was born approx 1832 and married in 1864 to Julian Hauser at Lutheran Church, Rocky Lead, Vic. Australia. They had 10 children. I have found quite alot of information on the Hauser side of the family but nothing on the Gottliebsen side.
I wondered if you came across Theodor in any of your research.
Kind regards,
Ann Hayes

Gottlieb changed to Lipp?

I just found a death record for an ancestor named John G. Lipp who died in 1910 in Philadelphia. On it his father is listed as "John Gottlieb". I am not sure if this means that Gottlieb was anglicized to Lipp, or if John Gottlieb was not a full name (maybe the father's name was John Gottlieb Lipp?) The family came from Wurttemburg (city unknown). Anyway, I am wondering if Gottlieb is a Jewish name (I am not religious and have friends of all stripes; Jewish ancestry would be very interesting to me).

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could help me, as I have hit a brick wall with my search for my Great-grandfathers ancestry from the UK.

His name appears as Lewis Gottliebe in the 1891 census, and nationality as Austria F.S. (Foriegn Subject), living with the Pabwead family from Germany in London England (There are also people from Poland mentioned on the same record, meaning that the country of Poland was recognised).

1901 also just sates Austria, but the 'e' has gone from the end of his surname (possibly original type error, as never appears again) living with his wife Sarah Barnett & daughter Rosalind.

His 1896 marriage certificate from the Deritend Synagogue in Birmingham sates his Fathers name is Hyman Gottlieb who was a Wine merchant.

I've checks as many places as I can think, with no interment records, army service etc I don't know where to start. I've search every database I can think of (Jewishgen etc) for Austria, Poland, Germany & Russia.

Apparently when alive he didn't speak of his home land or family (didn't speak much English at all), and from the few living relatives there are a couple of stories (that he went into an office an Austrian and came out a Pole). Don't know how true.

If anyone can give me advice on where to go next please let me know.

Many thanks

Nicola Gottlieb

I also had a Samuel Gottlieb in my family. He went to Cornell University and became a dentist. Samuel had a brother, Abraham, who drowned. Their father was Eli Gottlieb.(don't have a certain name of his wife). So the family story goes, the original surname was Shuster but Eli changed it to Gottlieb. Our Gottlieb family branch was from Russia. Hope to find family.

On rereading your message I realized you are probably the child of one of Jacque's sisters, rather than his brother Max. Whatever information you can provide on the rest of the Gottlieb family would be much appreciated. Jacques died when my husband David was a small child & David had little contact with his aunts/uncle & cousins on that side. The last contact was in the late 1960s.

Eureka! I just saw your message and I'm delighted!! My husband David is the son of Max's brother Jacques! We had just about given up hope of finding any Gottlieb relatives, since we had no idea that Max had survived adolescence and the sisters all changed their names (to equally common names) and moved when they married. I have a number of pictures of the Gottlieb family orchestra, Moise/Moses/Morris Davidowitz Gottlieb, etc. and have had at least limited success getting names from one or two previous generations. You are our only link to the rest of the Gottlieb/Klempner family. Please contact me ASAP so that we can compare information.

What do you know about this Max Gottlieb? Do you know where he was born, if he ever lived in Brooklyn, or whether he had brothers and sisters (how many? names?)? I am looking for a Max Gottlieb whose family (headed by Moishe/Moses and Jennie Gottlieb) came from Mariampol, Russia (now Lithuania) around 1980. But that's an exceedingly common name, so I need more clues to establish a linkage.

I am researching a book on Karl Dane, the late MGM actor, who was born in Copenhagen as Karl Gottlieb in 1886. His children were Ingeborg Helene born in 1912 and Ejlert Karl, born 1911. He also had a brother, Reinart Rasmus, born 1885. Any information from surviving members of the Gottlieb family would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Laura

Possible GOTTLIEB Connection

I have a Maria Magdelena GOTTLIEB (ca 1709 - May 1787), daughter of Franz Ludwig GOTTLIEB, who married Johann Mathias HELBRON (ca 1712 - 16 Aug 1790) on 25 Aug 1732 in Trier, Germany. They had at least two sons: Peter (7 Jul 1739 - 24 Apr 1816) and Karl Andreas (8 May 1746 - 28 Nov 1793). Both sons were Catholic missionaries in the Capuchin Order to the US, although Karl returned to Europe to seek funds for his missionary Church and was executed during the French Revolution. Peter served in Western Pennsylvania. This GOTTLIEB connection is one of my "unconnected" families and am looking for any information that might provide a possible link.

From prior contacts, there were GOTTLIEB families living near the German-Luxembourg border, not far from Trier. If any of this sounds familiar, please contact me. Thanks!

Bill
Upland, CA
