Look on the left-hand side on Ancestry.com and click on the box that says records and it will take you to a listing which brings us US and Intnl Marriage Records 1560-1900. He is listed as John Gough. Creative spelling back then, no? I'm a g-g-g-granddaughter thru Mary Gouge and Joseph Buchanan, thru Mary Buchanan and Wiley Gilbert Woody, thru George Wyatt Woody and Alice Honora Orren, thru Nancy Woody and Millard M. Jaynes.

OBITUARY

MRS. MARY HUGHES
Mrs. Mary Emma Gouge Hughes, 1500 Elm, died Oct. 2, 1944, in a local convalescent home after a long illness. She was the widow of Edwin Hughes, former peace justice in the town of Trenton.

She was born in South Trenton, Aug. 1, 1863, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Merritt C. Gouge and was married on Sept. 19, 1883, her husband dying in December, 1931. After his death, she came to Utica where she lived with Miss Margaret J. Evans.

She was an active worker in the First Methodist Church of Trenton, having served as president of the Women's Home Missionary Society and the Epworth League and was a teacher in the Sunday School. Mrs. Hughes attended the Christian Missionary Alliance Church in Utica.

Surviving are a son, Edwin M. Hughes, Utica; two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

My note: She was my maternal great grandmother.

Hi, Cheryl. I don't have much on Enicholas Guge, in fact he's the end of the line for my family tree until I can track down his parents. Here's what I do have:

Enicholas W. Guge (aka Nicholas)
b. 1806 or 1807, KT
listed in 1850 census as farmer in Prairie Township, Tipton County, IN
Both he and his wife Martha Dickinson could read and write.

I do have info on Enicholas & Martha's children and their descendants if you're interested. What I've been able to find on Martha and her parents is a little hazy -- perhaps due to spellings of "Dickison" (with no "n").

Sorry, I don't have anything about Will's parents yet. Will's son Charley married two of Mom's sisters. He first married Thelma Lowery, daughter of Robert Samuel and Toney Waycaster Lowery. She died in 1925 from being burned.No children. He next married Thelma's sister Bonnie and they had 2 sons, Gordon and Herman. I grew up in Marion, but I've been gone for over 40 years now. I try to make it to the McHone reunion in Spruce Pine each year.
Seems like I remember a Lind having a vet office on State Street in Marion. Kinfolk?

I think I'm getting somewhere now. This is William Woodard Gouge, not William T. I was going thru a Mitchell co site, http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncmitche/start.html (under "Compiled Data on the right hand side, click on families) and noticed how many Will Gouges there were. Later I was searching thru McDowell county digital library, http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/mcdowell.htm near the bottom under "vital records" is the delayed births. I found:

Fred Edward Gouge b.Jun16, 1908
Queenie Elizabeth Gouge b.Nov5, 1905
Eula Mae Gouge b.Apr18, 1901
Charles W. Gouge b.Dec 25, 1898
The parents name was either William W. or Wm. Woodard or William Woodard Gouge. According to Queenies obit that S. Donaldson was kind enough to post (very helpful! I remember Omar Wiseman ran a store on West Henderson St in Marion in the '60's) she had 7 brothers, so the other 4 must have been born in Mitchell Co. William W. Gouge and Mary S. Gouge are buried in Grassy Creek Cemetery near Spruce Pine. They have tombstones posted on their site. Or at least they did, I just tried to find the link but couldn't. Luckily I'd saved them . That's section G, row 5 and plat C in the old graveyard by the church.

Is this the same Will Gouge that had a son Charlie/Charles W. Gouge born Dec 25, 1898 in Mitchell Co and died Aug 6, 1952 in Mitchell Co. found dead on a stump at the golf course in Spruce Pine? That's the right family. Eula Mae Gouge was my great grandmother. I have found William Woodard Gouge and have some evidence that his mother was Elizabeth Unknown, but nothing on his father.

How do you fit into this line? It sounds like you may live in that area, too?

I was actually born and raised in Southern CA, now I'm in Boise, ID. But the rest of my family is still in the McDowell/Buncombe county areas of NC.

The Gouges are a big empty spot on my family tree. I'll keep you posted if I'm able to find anything on the lineage. I hope you'll do the same for me?

As for the Linds in NC--very doubtful there's a connection. My husband's family is from MA and Canada.

the pics. bring back alot of memories from a lot of visits to tenn. as a child. the picture of jack and dora campbell especially. she was my grandfathers sister. and made the best biscuits you ever tasted. they have a daughter jean, and a son vernon that still as far as i know live in unicoi co. i am trying to trace roots also. my grand father was john westley gouge and married mary{genevieve} o'malley in illinois. my grand fathers parents were david gouge and sarah campbell. i would love to hear back from you. thanks again for posting the pics. cheryl

I know VERY little about the Gouge family and am becoming increasingly confused on them. It appears to be pretty certain that Sarah was born in 1792, married in 1810, and died in Missouri in 1874. Beyond that I am running into a lot of mixed information.

I *do* however have photos of the tombstones of James and Sarah McKinney as well as Andrew and Hannah. Also, Ransom and Elnora McKinney and their son Herfred with his wife Mary Etta (my grandparents). I will be happy to share these with anyone who may be interested.

I am the great great grandaughter of Lucinda Dickinson sister of Martha Dickinson Gouge wife of Enicholas (Nicholas) Guge. I have already done a bit on the siblings of Lucinda and Martha. and am trying to find their paternal grandparents. and confirm their mothers maiden name so the hunt can continue. I'm more than willing to share my data with other researchers or help fill in any gaps someone may have. as I would like to do to my data files as well. Queenie Good, 95, of Laurel Creek Court, formerly of Marion, died Sunday November 26, 2000 in a Spruce Pine rest home. She was the daughter of the late William and Mary Smith Gouge and wife of Dock S. Good, who died in 1968. She was also preceded in death by a sister and seven brothers. A member of Conley Memorial Presbyterian Church, she was a loving and caring mother. Mrs. Good is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Omar Wiseman of Marion; son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Elsie Good of Sevier; sister, Lillie Harris of marion; granddaughters Brenda Wiseman Muldrow and husband Bob of Raleigh and Lynn Good Ashe and husband Randall of Brevard; grandson, Omar Royce Wiseman of Niceville, FL; great granddaughters, Jan Balda and husband Mark of Plano, TX, Beth Mattox and husband Troy of Roanoke, VA and Miranda Ashe of Brevard; six great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday in the Grindstaff Memorial Chapel of Webb Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Hicks Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until the service hour Wednesday at the funeral home.

Frederick H. GOUGE was my maternal 2 great grand uncle. His parents were Jacob GOUGE, Sr. [1765-1848] and Mary MERRIT/MERRITT PEET GOUGE [1771-1868]. Jan <jnrose@webtv.net>

GOUGE, FREDERICK H., the architect, of 26-27 Winston Building, Utica, N.Y., was graduated from Hamilton College in 1870. His early education was acquired at a district school and the academy at Rome, N.Y. In 1871-72 he practiced civil engineering in Fulton and Herkimer counties and on the Bound Brook Railway line in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. In 1873 he formed a partnership with William H. Miller, at Ithaca, N.Y., for the practice of the profession of architecture. In 1876 he removed to Utica, where he opened an office and resumed work as an architect. Mr. Gouge was born in Trenton, N.Y., May 5, 1845, son of Jacob Gouge, a farmer. The farm on which his grandfather, also named Jacob Gouge, settled at Trenton in 1796 is still retained by the family. His mother, Laura (Powers) Gouge, was a descendant of the Burlingame and Grinnell families of Connecticut. October 25, 1881, Mr. Gouge married Abbie P. Moore, of Trenton Falls, N.Y., by whom he had three children: Julia Sherman Gouge, Laura Gouge, and George Frederick Gouge. Mr. Gouge is a member of the American Institute of Architects and has been president of Western New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects for two terms. Among the notable buildings designed by him are the First National Bank, Utica City National Bank, Sayre Memorial church, Park Baptist church, the St. Francis De Sales church in the city of Utica, the Cayuga County Savings Bank at Auburn, and the Colgate Gymnasium at Colgate University. Mr. Gouge is a member of the Fort Schuyler and Arcanum Clubs.

I sure wish I knew who Sarah Gouge's father is. I was hoping you might know, I am at a dead end. All I know is that my Sarah Gouge born Feb 2, 1792 in NC,married James
William McKinney in 1810 in Campbell County, TN. If my Sarah and your Martin are siblings, there would be a 12yr age
difference between them, which is not uncommon for the times. I was hoping one of their children might have been named after Sarah's father, but I hit road blocks there too. Here are Sarah's sons names:

David
Calvin
Andrew
James
Henry
