I believe I have some info for Ivory Govan. If this is the same person, he is my uncle. His brother Erven is my father. They were born and raised in the 1920's along with several other siblings in the SW Arkansas town of Stamps. Their father, my grandfather, was a sharecropper. Most of the family eventually migrated to Arizona.

Hi Robyn,

I have just looked at the notice board and read your post. I have a James Govan, born in about 1814 in Stonehouse in my tree. His Brother Thomas (b.1812) is my direct ancestor. I can let you see my tree if it would help?

Arthur Govan

He and his family know a fair bit of their family history but I don't think they've taken much advantage of the Internet to connect the dots. :-)

Hi! My name is Tawanda Pelzer. I am 30 yrs old and currently residing in New Jersey. This is all very interesting information! I received a message on facebook from a woman claiming that Iam a descendant of a man named Martin Govan. I am african american and I do know for a fact that my family is from orangeburg,sc but our surname is Pelzer. Its so hard for african americans to find this type of info due to the slave trade and all, but I would definitely like to contact your cousin Bobby to learn some more information. I have always been fascinated and wondering why my dark-skinned father had blue-gray eyes and how we ended up with a german surname. My email address is tlc10453@live.com. I would REALLY like to find out some more information.

Take Care!

I WOULD LOVE to know if your ancestors owned my ancestor's who I have traced back to Orangeburg (circa 1821). I found the record that you have here and it appeared that he had 46 slaves. Do you know if ANY of your relatives have any records, documents, or information of the slaves, their children, whether they stayed in the area after slavery, etc. I would love to chat. Govan, Jr., born 1868, Alabama

Married Daisy Watson Thiel, 25 Nov 1903
Daisy was born 1877, New Orleans, LA (father from Germany)
She died 13 May 1957, in New Orleans

Children:
Charles Govan, b. 1907 in New Orleans
Elizabeth Govan Wallis, b. 1909, died 6 May, 1935 in NO
Jack Govan, b. 1913 in New Orleans

F.G.'s cousin, William Govan, is my ggrandfather. My mother told stories of F.G.'s father, Moore Fauntleroy Govan, who was a bit crazy and at one point lived in the hills in Alabama, where he "taught his horse to sing and eat oranges."!!!

M.F. Govan's is descended from plantation owning "first family" of VA--the Govans and the Fauntleroys.

Who is your relation to F.G.?

My name is James Govan and I am a direct descendant of James Govan and Martha Jamieson who sailed to Australia with their children on a ship called the Morning Light in 1858. We have produced a book about all of the descendants in Australia, we are aware that John and Isabella stayed in England. We have not been able to trace their parents who accroding to death certificates were Alexander and Isabella Govan. So I can tell you what happened to ALL of Isabellas family and their descendants.

Hi Jessica. I think your gggrandfather was from Ireland. There is a ships passenger list with a JAMES GOVAN who was a clockmaker from Ireland.
http://istg.rootsweb.com/v3/1800v3/escort18620624_2.html

There is also a Joseph Govan who came over from Liverpool in 1903, probably from Ireland as well but it doesn't say.
http://istg.rootsweb.com/1903project/oceanic19031111.html

Then there is a land grant for a James Govan in Napa, CA.in 1878. I think this is the same as the aforesaid James Govan from Ireland, but that's for you to find out...
http://userdb.rootsweb.com/landrecords/cgi-bin/landrecord.cg...=

Do you know your grandfather/ggrandfather's names? That's a big help.

Here are some death records too...
http://vitals.rootsweb.com/ca/death/search.cgi?surname=govan...

I would be a 2nd cousin, 3x removed from Martha Jamieson Carmichael. I have names and dates of my Australian relatives but none of the "history".
If so, John was a brother of William b.c. 1824 Old Kilpatrick who was my husband's ancestor.
Rae

Hi Felicia.

Yes, this branch comes from Glasgow--a section called Govan. It's a famous shipbuilding area that has become mostly industrial, from what I understand. THere is even a Govan Road. But Gawain, from whence the name comes, was a famous hero of King Arthur's Round Table, and the Scottish claim him, making the name very common and so almost impossible to pinpoint ancestry. But fun!

What kind of info do you have?

Hi Felicia. Your branch is probably not related to mine, but I guess we're all related in some way or another! Your branch is the Andrew Robison Govan, who is the main interest of everyone else on this message board. Unfortunately, I'm the only one looking for my branch I think! Good luck.
