Have you checked Scotlands people web site. I am tracing my husbands ancestors. His family believes they are also related to Nathaniel Gow. His family ended up in Western Australia. Don't know if this helps but if you want any more info please let me know.

Ms. Gow was born Jan. 1, 1960, in Muscatine, the daughter of Lawrence B, Jr. and Marcella Jean (Blair) Gow. She was a resident of Florida since the mid 1980’s.

She is survived by her parents, Lawrence and Marcella Gow of Sebring, Fla.; brothers, Tom Gow and Tim Gow, both of Greer, S.C.; sister, Cyndi Spinden, of Brentwood, Tenn., and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. Donations may be made in her memory to one’s Charity of choice. Cremation arrangements entrusted to Stephenson-Nelson Funeral Home, Sebring, Fla.

Interesting!

"Gow" means "Smith" in Gaelic, and its a Scottish Clan... with its own tartan..

My Grandfather came from Scotland to Canada in the early 1900's, originating from he Isle of Rhone (sp?) and most of out tracible relatives are in a town called Malnas (sp?)and there seem to be about three family names...Gow, Pope, and McKay...go figure!

Baronet Gow had 2 sons with Nora Mapes: Leroy Chester Gow and William McCormick Gow (both born in MN). He then married Mattie/Martha Miles around 1886 in CO and had 7 children: Ima Jean Gow Phillips, Thomas M Gow, Nellie Bly Gow Watterson, Ruby Alice Gow Hotchkiss, Baronet W Gow, Napoleon Gow, and 1 unknown child that died before the 1900 census.

Listed as "Barney Gowe," the family can be found in Granada, Prowers, CO, in 1900. Baronet and Napolean are found in Granada in 1920. I have not found the family in 1910 ... yet.

Gow in Gairloch, Scotland

Has anybody ever researched a Gow in Gairloch. Family papers mention a Murdo Gow, Letterewe, married to Elizabeth MacLennan, I assume in the early 1800's. But I've never been able to find one single record of any Gow in Gairloch.

Any Gow you might have that lived in Gairloch will be useful to continue my search.

Gow family - Scotland, Canada & USA

I've finally broken a barrier on my Gow family tree. Alexander Gow and wife Elisabeth Buchnanan were living on Kirklane (The Moss), Kincardine, Pershire, Scotland in 1814 with 7 children (Walter, Janet, John, Duncan, JAMES, Ann, and Elizabeth).

Walter (1794 Scotland-1852 OH, married Agnes McGregor & Ellen Van Kirk), Duncan (b. 1799 d. aft 1860, no children found) and Janet (b. 1793 d. 1860-1870 PA, married David Gardner) left Scotland with their families and settled in Beaver Co., Pennsylvania.

John is last confirmed in Kincardine in 1841.

JAMES (my 3rd great grandfather) married Christian Ferguson in 1831 and soon thereafter left for Ontario, Canada. They may have had as many as 7 children.

Ann married Duncan McIntyre, had 3 known children, and was last found in Kincardine in 1861.

Elizabeth likely married John McCloud, had 6 known children, and is last found in Drummond, Lanark Co., Ontario, Canada in 1852.

I'd love to hear from anyone who may be connected to this family.

I too can't find anything on William Gow's origins - I also can't find anything in the OPRs on Niel Gow the famous fiddler who comes from the same area to see if we're related! (I reckon Niel Gow would be the generation before William)

Hello Adrian, it appears we are related.......William Gow is my 3rd Great Grandfather. The OPR's dont exist for his birth or his death, which makes it difficult to trace his origins.
I have information on his daughters but not much on his sons except for William who took over the farm.
I have vague info on Agnes' parents, but not much more.......would appreciate info on the siblings and the uncle and your own pedigree.
I'm a descendant of Williams youngest daughter Clementina.

Gary - I can't answer your question, but William Gow at Whins of Fordie is my 5 greats grandfather. Sadly can't crack anything about his parents, etc. For his wife, Agnes Thomson, I have her parents, an uncle, and several siblings (10 children to Agnes' parents) - from her father's will.
Have you been able to do any better yet?

Margaret Sullivan alias Gow married Sam Kingston, Co. Cork, 1826

I would guess that Margaret might have first married someone by the name of Gow and then on February 7, 1826, Mgt. Sullivan married Samuel Kingston in the RC chapel of Drimoleague, Co. Cork. Witnesses were Thomas Kingston and Dan Sullivan. Is there anyone connected to this family?

There was also a Timothy Gow, alias Sullivan who married Mary McCarthy in the same parish in 1820. I wonder if it is possible that both Margaret and Tomthy had a parent by the name of Sullivan and a step-parent by the name of Gow.

I am trying to track my CLARKE family and decided to see if I could get some clues here. Henry Walter (Harry) CLARKE (a picture frame maker) from Manchester married a Louisa GOW (daughter of Robert & Elizabeth GOW) in 1909 in North Reddish, Lancashire (I believe just outside Manchester). Unsure if they had any children or what happened to Harry or Louisa. Can anyone help? I do know that Louisa was a twin (sister was Alice). Love to hear from you!

This is what I have on James(now)
James Gow b. January 24, 1778 Little Dunkeld
Son of Robert Gow and Margart Duff
Married to Margaret Ferguson on December 15, 1800 in Little Dunkeld.

Children:

Jean Gow b. July 23, 1801 Ch. in Logierait
Donald Gow b. July 23, 1801 Ch. in Logierait
Patrick Gow b. October 19, 1803 Ch. in Logierait
Margaret Gow b. April 16, 1806 Ch. in Logierait

That is all the kids I have for them, but providing none of the two died early(which I have no idea on) they would have had more children.

I have been following this thread and noticed a similarity to records I found regarding my Gow line.
I have an Elizabeth Gow (alias Ferguson) married Walter Graham in 1822. She was born in Kilmadoch abt 1793..her father was John Gow and she had a sister Mary that seemed to be always at their Farm during census taking during 1841,1851,1861 as a visitor..
The interesting part is that I have seen the ALIAS Ferguson many times in the Church records pertaining to the Gows. Had a theory that perhaps they had to change clan names way back during the clearings and at this period in the late 1700's these people starting using their real names again.

Ann Gow & Alexander Wilson in Crieff

I need a wee bit of help in trying to find out more about my ancestors. The info I have is as follows:

Ann Gow (widow of Alexander Wilson, cotton weaver) died in East High Street, Crieff, Perthshire on 20 March 1864 aged 75 years. On her death certificate her parents were recorded as

James Gow, butcher (deceased) & Ann Gow m/s Stewart (deceased)

This death record was recorded by her son Alexander Wilson residing at Strathallan Home Farm.

I have found Ann on the 1861 and 1851 census for Crieff shown recorded as being born in Crieff and sick. Her death record states that the cause of death was "paralysis years"
Together Ann Gow and Alexander Wilson had the following children gleaned from the baptism records for Crieff

04/04/1819 JOHN WILSON
08/05/1821 JAMES WILSON (my gg grandfather)
08/06/1823 MARY ANN WILSON
01/04/1825 ALEXANDER WILSON
03/10/1830 MARGARET WILSON

Peter Gow (b.Sep 1824, Perth, Scotland d.21 Mar 1901) and Jane Parkinson (b. 16 May 1834, Ireland d. 20 April 1902) had 6 children: Josiah (b. 1860), Jane Melville (b.1861), Marjory Ann Caroline (b. 27 Apr 1863), Grace Parkinson (b.29 Jul 1866), Mungo (b.2 Aug 1868), and Thomas Bruce (b.7 Oct 1870 d.25 May 1942); all born in Cantley, Quebec. Mungo married Rachel McNeil on 12 oct 1892 had two children: Melville (b. 1894) and Stanley (b.1895).

I would be interested in finding out other details of this family, particularly information on Peter Gow or Jane Parkinson's parents, siblings, etc.

Tremendous work.

However, I also noticed the 113 year old Thomas Gow. His wife Isobella according to your research would have been 112 when she died.

I am particularly interested in 26. James Gow., born in Little Dunkeld on 24 Jan 1778. Did he have a son,William, born in 1810 . Any connection with Newton of Ballinloan just outside Little Dunkeld?

I notice that 26. James and Margaret Ferguson had Robert Gow 27. in 1779 when James was 1 year old!!

Despite what I think are errors, great work and would appreciate a reply even if no connection betwen James 26 and William born at Ballinloan in 1810

Have just seen your post re Robert Gow. Helen and Robert were siblings of William Gow. There was also Alexander and Margaret. William is my husbands g-g-grandfather. He migrated to Australia (where we live) in 1907 with his parents, William snr. and Marion, and brother Robert on the Persic. I have not been able to find out what happened to Robert after he arrived in Australia - he seems to have vanished. Any information you have on Helen or Robert would be appreciated. Jan, I would be interested in your family information. We have tracked the Gow ancestors of Alexander who married Elizabeth Isdale in 1823 back to the late 1600s in Glasnafied, Muthill but no further. I'd be interested knowing what you have discovered.

All the children were born in Dunning, Perthshire (not Dunfermline, Fifeshire)except for the youngest Daniel b. 1842 who was born in Tillicoulty, Clackmannanshire. They all have OPR baptism records.

It's a little late but Alexander Gow (a weaver) who married Elizabeth Isdale in 1823 in Dunning was born 1795 in Glasnafied, Muthill and his parents were John Gow & Cathrine King. I have a copy of his death certificate. He died 4 Aug 1862 in Tillicoulty, Clackmannan.

My GOW ancestors emigrated to Australia from Crieff in Scotland.

Catherine Mackay had married a man from Crieff: Sgt James Gow of 93rd Sutherland Highlanders who was killed in 1857 at Lucknow, India. They had 3 children: Mary, Isabella and James. Catherine Gow was living in Crieff in 1861 with these 3 children. Mary Gow married Samuel Fox Sharp and Isabella GOW came to Brisbane on the same ship with them and their children.

James and Catherine Gow are my great great grandparents. Even though I visited Crieff in person, I have been unable to advance further.

It would be great if we could get in touch and share our joint experiences so we may unlock the mystery.
