Unfortunately, I think I'll probably add to this confusion.
I am a descendant of John Mackey (various spellings) and
Ella Harrison both from Fairfield, South Carolina. John
was living in the home of Emory Gowdy and his wife, along with John's two sisters Lena, who later married a Harper Philpot and Ida who later married a John Garrett. We have
been trying to figure this out for years too. Barry Gowdy
is a cousin and is listed in ancestry.com. He has some vital info. Hope this helps.
Michelle Daniels Brooks

I am hoping to find any pictures of their residents on Wallace St. in Chicago, as well as any information on their landlord, C. H.
This is slightly off topic but I was wondering. I have misplaced some of my information and was wondering who were the parents of Theresa Ann Thurza Mckenzie who married James Ervin Gowdy. He was my great great grandfather. I am slowly working on my gowdy relatives here trying to get all their information gathered up. We have a reunion coming up the saturday after mother's day. So I will have forms to capture the data of all those who attend and hopefully they can fill out their kids or any other members that they know dates of etc.

I hope to pursue the DNA testing within a few months. Did you go thru Ancestry.com to have it done?

Thanks,

Thanks for the reply to my message. I'll look into getting a copy of the death notice. Also, can I ask how you're related to the Gowdy line? Also do you or anybody you know have a good photo of Nellie. I have one that is believe to be her wedding photo on here in my tree. I also have her baby photo of her. That my grandfather had and gave it to my dad. I'll post it on my tree if you or anyone would like to see it.

I just like to see if there anymore photos of her and maybe some old letters or stories of her at all.

Thanks, Justie

Perhaps you have it already, but if not, a copy of Carlton's obituary can be gotten by following this link
http://index.rbhayes.org/hayes/index/partners/Paulding.asp

Also, John S. and Mary Gowdy had a son George C. born 1864 and also a John C. born 1866 according to the Richland Co., IL census. Perhaps that is the source of the confusion.

Nellie Carmon (Gowdy) Stilwell

Hi I'm looking for any info or more photos of Nellie Carmon Gowdy. She was born: Jan 1 1891 in Paulding Co. Ohio, and died: June 1 1924 in Mackinaw City MI. She was the daughter of George Carlton Gowdy (1864-1891); Julia Irene Siniff (1870-1828). She married John "Neil" Stilwell (1881-1943), on July 14, 1904 in Ohio. They came to life in Michigan in 1908. I read a story written by their son and daughter in law. It stated that George Gowdy probably wasn't Nellie father that it was a "John" Gowdy and it was said that Nellie daughter Irene. John Gowdy was her grandfather not George Gowdy. But, all the family records I have from other family memebers say George. It was said that on Nellie's death records it only says Carlton Gowdy as listed as the fahter. So, I don't know what story to believe. Just like to know if there anymore story or photos of Nellie that I don't have yet! Also it said that their oldest son Wirley was told by his father there was a family scandal on his mother Nellie side of the family. That Nellie did tell John but he never got around to telling his son what the scandal was? So, maybe there family out there that related to Nellie on the Gowdy side that might be able to answer that question?

P.S. I'm the great-grandson of John and Nellie(Gowdy)Stilwell. My grandfather Melvin W. Stilwell was their 5th son and 6th child; born:Feb 10, 1918.

Thanks, Justie

I am sorry to hear about your loss. I have not corresponded with Robin in quite a few years. It was probably around 2002-2003 I purchased one of the Gowdy geneaology books she had created and then about 10 others in my family(cousins, aunts etc) purchased them as well. I have just started again to try to find more information. First I must collect all my branh's information down on paper or into the computer. There are many I will need to update and add to my information sheets (Marriages, births etc.)

I will forward my branch to you as soon as I can complete it. I believe our branch's merge with James Ervin. Benjamin L and Jefferson Beauragard were brothers if I remember correctly.

Has any progress been made in the attempt to trace James and Mary Gowdy back to Ireland or Scotland or even Ebeneezer Gibson for that matter?

Hello I do have information on this line or at least my portion of it. There is some information at Gowdy.org.

James Malcolmson was my ggg grandfather. James Malcolmson had several children and one was James Ervin, He also had several children and one was Jefferson Beauragard who was my Great Grandfather.

Gowdy.org has some good info. You can also contact the three rivers historical society (South Carolina)and there is more information there.

Robin Langley who used to work or was associated with the three rivers historical society (Conway, SC.) has traced it back to the original James Gowdy who came to America with his sister Mary and Ebeneezer Gibson sr. and Ebeneezer jr and daughetr mary francis gibson. They arrived in 1774. Not sure where from except most think Ireland via Scotland.

Robin would be a great source of Info as she has almost everything from the original James and Mary down. I added my line to her information about 10 years ago but have not contacted her in several years to update the new additions. Before I updated her she had no information on my line at all except that Jefferson Beauragard had been born.

Good luck hope this helps

Does anyone have more info on a Samuel Gowdy, born Richmond, Va abt 1788, married Nancy Burnett in Washington Co, Kentucky? His daughter Laura married my gggrandfather James Fryer "Friar". Another daughter Dorinda, married 2 Bass brothers, first Wm, then Tyre or Tyree Jefferson Bass, a son James married a Bass as well, Alfred Gowdy married a Hotchkiss. Cannot track either him or Nancy Burnett further back than Washington Co, except that his death record states he was born in Richmond, Va, parents unknown.
