Goyne to Gowins

I have a Thompson Gowins, b. 1820 Al., married to Martha M. Graham, in '50-70 Jefferson Co., Al. It looks very possible he was son of or related to a Benjamin Goyne, b. 1784 N.C., 1830, '50-60 Jeff., Al. Does anybody know this family? A number of Goyne/Goen/Goins, etc., come in to Alabama in 1830 - on and some stay a while, but some go on. Thompson stayed, as did at least two of his kids. Thanks, John

Melanie,
How far back have you gone on your family? What was Ruby Goynes' maiden name and who were her parents? Wasn't she related to the Williams family some way?
I grew up in St. Helena nd dated Lee until we were in the 12th grade.I don't remember why we broke up. No big fight or anything like that. My sister married Billy Ray King , whose mother was a Williams and my husbands' grandmother was a Williams and first cousin ( or sister, I'd have to look it up) to Billy Ray's Williams grandfather. And it seems like I remember that Billty Ray and Lee were supposed to be distant cousins. I started trying to work some more on the Williams (they are not easy to do, like some famalies) when some distant relative died and I was adding the obituary in my notes section.
I don't know why but I thought that Goynes was Spanish in origan but it could be from the English Goings and got changed through the years. Nice to talk to you.
Bev (Durbin) Varnado

Thanks for your reply. Do you know anything about your Goynes family possibly being in St. Helena around the years 1810-1825 ?
I'm trying to determine who my Ellen Goynes parents were. Ellen married William Womack who was born in St. Helena in 1815. Ellen was born in Copiah Co. Miss in 1820 and they married there in 1836. I can not seem to place her with any of these Goynes families who were in Copiah around the time she was born. She may have had a sister named Elizabeth. Other name patterns seem to be Martha, Matilda and Wiley. Also, Ellen was Indian, census records for her say that her parents were born in Georgia.
Appreciate any info you might have on these earlier Goynes familys in St Helena or Copiah. Thanks very much.
Penny

Update...

Wow this board has really grown since I've last visited. I have to apologize for my first few postings, I was like 17 and ...obviously I really..really...liked exclamation marks. Well I'm 20 now, and I don't think I really have any new information that ya'll probably don't know already. I visited my family (the Goynes' side) recently in detroit and found out the man that knew generations of our family history is the same man that passed a few years ago. His name was Enny Ree Goynes and he's from Jefferson also, as are many Goynes's. If anybody has any further information about anything Goynes related please feel free to email me at Princesscharming83@yahoo.com , I check that more than I check these boards unfortunately... and if you'd like to see if there's a resemblence :-P I also have a pic up at http://profiles.yahoo.com/oneboredchick18 . Also I am in the U.S. Army, so if there is anyone you would like to find that you know is also or once was in the U.S. Army feel free to email me their name and I'll be happy to look 'em up for ya :o) Be blessed! (Last exclamation mark I promise)

Hi,
Can anyone tell me who are the children of John Goynes who is found living in St. Helena Parish, Louisiana and is enumerated in the 1820 census records? I believe that he may have later moved to Copiah County, Mississippi.
Am looking for my Indian gr gr grandmother Ellen or Ellenor Goynes born in Copiah County in 1820.....married William Womack in 1836 in same county.
There was also a James Goynes in St Helena at the same time as John. Does anyone know the spouses and children of these two men?
Any help appreciated. Thanks...Penny

Hi Brenda, I am hoping you can help me. Do you have an Amos Goynes in your data bank? He was living in Miss. in 1840. I believe he is my Gr Gr Gr Grandpa. He had a daughter named Catherine Angeline who married William Hughes Moore in 1850 and they lived in Sebastian Co. Ark. Catherine was born in 1832 in Miss. If you have an Amos I would appreciate it if you would get in touch with me at nanniesaponi@lanset.com

Thank you very much for your time

Lois Cornelius Smethers

Texas Goynes

I am still looking for my GrPa Goynes and his family. I found them on the 1880 Trinity Co, TX census. They were listed as; Hadley, wife Mary, nephew William 1 yr old, also listed were William, wife Mary O. Goynes, son Champ Dale 1 yr old. I believe the child William was my GrPa and Champ was his twin. Hadley was his uncle. He apparently raised William, I don't know why. We always thought GrPa's Father was Had/Hadley Goynes. The 2 boys were born in TX, but Hadley and William were listed as being born in LA. Is there anyone out there who can help me with this info ?
Thanks and Be Blessed,
Lorene

My name is Peggy Goynes.I am also trying to trace my geneaology.
My grandfather's name was Bob Goynes, born in June 4 1881 or 1887
in GlenDale or White Rock, Tx. He married Susie Jackson in 1915.
They had 1 son, Delbert Goynes (my Dad) and l daughter, Billie Goynes.
They are all deceased now, and what family records I have, there are
discrepancies. With the same spelling of surname and the town Glendale,
there is possible a link there. I have come to a lot of dead ends trying
to go back farther than my grandfather. Hopefully we can help each other.

Margaret,
I have read an article in the Goyen newsletter on William Goyen, Volume 1, No. 4 December 1989 William Goyens, Melungeon Becomes Texas Millionaire
In 1835, there is a ROBERT CALARE listed in William Goyens' household, no relationship given. Evidently William raised him, because he is in the 1850 census of William's household again as ROBERT COLLIER. age 31, born in Texas, and a farmer.
I believe this Robert to be the son of Susan Callier, daughter of Robert Callier who was murdered in Nacogdoches in the 1820's. On September 30, 1841, Adolphus Sterne, a magistrate and a promiment citizen of Nacogdoches recorded in his diary, "Verdict was had yesterday against William Goyens in favor of Elijah Loyd for a negro woman and some 6 or 7 children, formerly the property of Susan Collier."
Does you know anything more about this family?
Or do you have the thesis written about William Goyen by Diane Elizabeth Prince at Stephen F. Austin University?
Thanks very much for any help.
Sue Moore
Longview, TX
sbmoore@swbell.net
