Re: Goza's of Missouri
Today was the first notice that I remember receiving about this particular Goza thread.
Quickly scanning through the thread, I'd just like to verify my first impressions:
1. Posters so far have been African American -- descendents of slaves. However, one post mentioned being slave owners.
2. I didn't see any mention of Alabama.
If these two impressions are true, I wouldn't have any connection to this thread except perhaps via a vague memory of Civil War history. And that is that the slaves took on the surname of their former masters when they were emancipated after the war. And that brings another question: Would the newly free men and women have known the given names of their former owners and their wives and children?
3. One poster mentioned "largest land owner". Is there a threshhold that must be crossed to differentiate between large, medium and small?
My interest in posting on this thread is that my grandmother was a Goza and the earliest back I've traced is to her grandfather. He was born in South Carolina and married in Calhoun County, Alabama. His children were born: first son - SC; son, two daughters - Georgia; son, three daughters - Alabama.
Sincerely and best wishes,
Glenn
