Since my last post, I have received two email attachments sent by a distant cousin via TransferBigFiles DOT COM**. I am still working on cleaning up place names, which are “all over the place”. For example: Ottawa, Kansas and Ottawa, Franklin County, Kansas. Using these two as the sample, other places could be Ottawa, KS, U.S.A; Ottawa, Franklin Co., Kans; etc. So it’s been quite a chore. That original PAF file has some 74,000+ persons in it, going back to Matthew Gossee Sr, born about 1700 in Virginia.
Also in this thread I noticed mention of Aaron Goza, which is in my “place name cleanup” project; along with Copiah County, MS and Arkansas.
I also noted several posts mentioned Joe Goza’s book. That was a second notice I received from TransferBigfiles. The file itself is Joe’s book converted to images, page by page. The introduction mentions Gossees in Italy. If I ever get the place names cleaned up, that will be my next project – actually looking at the images and using them as source citations in my database.
So my next question regarding this thread: Is everybody referring to descendents of slaves or descendents of their former owners? If the latter, I would be glad to try to get copies to you via TransfBgFiles. (My receipt of these two files was my first awareness of such a service, so I would be trying something new as a sender.)

**TransferBigFiles sends you a notice that you have a big file waiting; and in that email the give you a hyperlink, which you can copy and paste into your web browser (my preferred method), or click on directly. There is a time limit.

Good luck everyone,
Glenn

I didn't write that I had the Goza book, I wrote that what I saw on the Internet mentioned that book.
Anyway, do you have names for the initials of F.P. GOZA??? and I'll look for some info to see if I can help you. What specifically do you want to know??

Re: John Gibson GOZA

Everything I see on the Internet says: George W. Goza, son of John Goza, per Goza Book by Joe Goza page 31. Also given is that he married twice: 1] Elizabeth A SCOTT and 2] Rebecca WALKER

However, looking at the Goza Book, page 31 doesn't have anything about a George W. Goza on it.

I think a better reference would be The Goza Book by Joe Goza page 16:
1. John GOZA, son of Aaron GOSA, Sr., married Mary Frances FONTAINE
.....2. Francis Fontaine GOZA m. 2] Frances COBB
.........3. George W. GOZA b. 1836 MS [no further info given]
.....2. Hiram GOZA m. Ann Caroline GIBSON
.........3. John Gibson GOZA m. Mary Eliza AUSTIN
.........3. George Washington GOZA b. 1817 Ark; m. 1843 Rebecca Carolina WALKER

If the George W. GOZA on page 16 is correct, then G. W. & John Gibson GOZA would have been first cousins since Francis & Hiram were brothers. This is the one I suspect to be your man.

Page 19, Joe Goza's book has George W., the son of Hiram & Ann Caroline, born in 1817 Ark, married to Rebecca Walker. So, don't think you're looking at the brothers John Gibson & George Washington since your man was born 1836. George W. and Rebecca Walker Goza died in the 1853 Yellow Fever Epidemic. After their death their children, Mary E. and James W., went to live with aunt & uncle, James Webster GOZA and Pauline WALKER.
Today was the first notice that I remember receiving about this particular Goza thread.

Quickly scanning through the thread, I'd just like to verify my first impressions:

1. Posters so far have been African American -- descendents of slaves. However, one post mentioned being slave owners.

2. I didn't see any mention of Alabama.

If these two impressions are true, I wouldn't have any connection to this thread except perhaps via a vague memory of Civil War history. And that is that the slaves took on the surname of their former masters when they were emancipated after the war. And that brings another question: Would the newly free men and women have known the given names of their former owners and their wives and children?

3. One poster mentioned "largest land owner". Is there a threshhold that must be crossed to differentiate between large, medium and small?

My interest in posting on this thread is that my grandmother was a Goza and the earliest back I've traced is to her grandfather. He was born in South Carolina and married in Calhoun County, Alabama. His children were born: first son - SC; son, two daughters - Georgia; son, three daughters - Alabama.

Sincerely and best wishes,
Glenn
Hello:

I have been keeping a file named “MSG BOARDS TO ANSWR” and I periodically take time to answer the oldest message. The original information for my Goza family came from a couple of 2C2R’s. Below is the descendent list of my x2 great grandfather.

Descendants of Frederick L Goza
1 Frederick L Goza	1793 -
.. +Catherine Diffy	1810 -
......	2 Zebulon Goza	1825 -
......	2 Alfred H Goza	1828 - 1907
.......... +Nancy Jane Hale	1832 -
...............	3 Martha C Goza	1850 - 1880
................... +Michael H Beck
...............	3 John Robert Goza	1852 - 1931
................... +Georgianna Walker	1856 - 1908
............... *2nd Wife of John Robert Goza:
................... +Sarah Jane Nappier	1867 -
...............	3 Franklin Pike Goza	1854 - 1922
................... +Nancy Jane Bloodworth	1859 - 1928 (Nancy Jane's mother was "Cherokee Squaw")
...............	3 Elizabeth C Goza	1857 -
...............	3 Nancy Agnes Goza	1860 -
...............	3 Frederick Jefferson Goza	1861 - 1888
...............	3 Alfred H Goza	1863 -
................... +Cornelia Willson	1860 -
...............	3 Sarah Ellen Goza	1866 - 1909
................... +James Hamilton Wright	1861 - 1903
......	2 Martha Goza	1833 -
......	2 Mary Goza	1835 -
......	2 Francis Goza	1838 -
......	2 Sarah L Goza	1843 -
......	2 Ura A Goza	1847 -
......	2 Laura J Goza	1847 –

. I have a couple of census records in my database for Frederick from 1860. If you recognize the older generations, please let me know. DeKalb County is confusing because of the identical names in Alabama and Georgia. My Frederick has a connection to South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama, and maybe Tennessee. In Alabama, the locations were Cherokee, then DeKalb County.

Best wishes,
A fellow "family tree climber!"

Donna, It appears to have been almost a year since you asked about the Goza Family. I just made the connection last month. The Peter Mathis Goza you mentioned was Peter Jarrett Goza(1770-1839) married Elizabeth Mathis (1777-1865) daughter of Benjamin Matthews. Their children were Mathew (b.1802) of Florida, Mark (b.1804) of Hot Springs Co, Ark, Sauls (b.1807) of Union Co, Ark, Joshua (1812) of Gibson Co, Tenn, Benjamin (1824) of Ark.
For the details I have on the Gozas, see http://liptrap.topcities.com/goza.htm For the ancestry of Elizabeth Mathis/Matthews, see http://liptrap.topcities.com/matthews.htm
or e-mail me at jliptrap77379@yahoo.com

Geri,
Narcissa's husband was Richard Henry Coleman. Is the picture to which you refer one of her and him? You said "her husband Thomas" in the post. I'm curious as to whether it is the same pose that I have for them. I also have a small tintype of a young woman, dark curly hair flowing over her shoulders, that I _think might_ be Narcissa. Would you like to see it and offer an opinion?

Please respond to my new email: julieoperkins@charter.net

Thanks,
Julie O'Neil Perkins

Don -

Thank you for your reply. I, too, have the information that you enclosed in your email - George Washington Goza was my paternal great grandfather and served in the Confederate Cavalry. While at the Univ of North Carolina (1857-1859) he roomed with one of his brothers Samuel Dupuy Goza - he, too, is said to have served in the CSA as a captain.

I am looking for specific information relating to the above brothers - if any photographs were available that would be an enormous benefit or personal anecdotes that had been passed down.

My GGF died in 1874 at age 34 - Samuel died in 1870 or so in his 30's.

Hope to hear from you and hope what I have related will be of help to you or some other Goza.

Cordially,

George M.
I am searching the GOZA site to determine if Amelia/Permilia
who married Joseph Hemanes (listed as from Cuba on 1850 Gadsden Co. Fl. census) was a Goza. Thomas Goza appears on estate papers of Joseph Hemanes dated Nov. 15, 1862 in Gadsden County. Another Goza married the grandson of Amelia & Joseph Hemanes. These two families are connected through marriage and other legal documents.
I have run into a deadend in finding Amelia's maiden name. The 1850 census states she was born in Carolina.
Any help would be appreciated.
Mary Sampson

Thanks for the information. Do you know what community they were living in on the 1900 and 1910 census records?

I have this information on A.H. Goza from the 1870 census. You may already have it.
1870 US Census, Sand Rock, Cherokee County, Alabama lists:
Goza, A.H., age 42, farmer, born Georgia
Nancy J., age 38, housekeeper, born Virginia
All children listed as born in Alabama:
Martha C, age 19, John R. age 17, Frank age 15, Elizabeth C. age 12, Nancy A. age 10, Frederick J. age 8, Alfred H. age 5, Sarah E. age 3.
Next door is:
F. Hale, age 64 born Virginia, Catherine housekeeper age 37, and Andrea? (female) age 23.

Do you think Catherine is F. Hale's second wife or a daughter? I don't have his wife's name.
The Flaherty/Florida connection is interesting. The Flarity's I am related to originally spelled it Flaherty. My mother says some of them pronounced Flarity "Floridy" which sounds more like what your family changed their spelling to. The Flarity's still have a reunion every year on the 1st Sunday in August in Dekalb County, Alabama.

Also, The Goza son, Benny? J? on the 1900 census (born August 1890) is the same as son Zeb B. (age 20) on the 1910 census. His full name was Zebulon Berry. I have a letter that my grandmother, Minnie Flarity Fike, wrote to her grandparents (John Robert and Georgia Goza) when she was a child asking them if "Uncle Zeb" is still staying with them. He never married and lived with his sister Catherine "Katie" who never married. She had lockjaw while young and her face was left twisted.I have a picture of John, Georgia, and some of their children. You can see that her face was deformed by the lockjaw.

I have been corrected regarding Catherine Agnes "Katie" Goza. She did in fact marry a man named William "Bill" Brown and they had a daughter named Della who married Isaac Titshaw. If I understand correctly, Zeb did continue to live with them.
Thanks, Toni, for the correction!

To Geri Goza Diehl:
I am interested in learning more about the Goza book. Having just read your message of 16, April, 2002, we seem to have a great-grandmother, Easter Victoria Tunnel, in common. I am very interested in learning more about her and my great grandfather, Washington Irving Goza. My maternal grandfather was Washington Irving Goza, Jr., born 1886 and married to Anna Dysart. My mother was her youngest child, Hazel Donna Goza. Her older brothers were Washington Irving Goza, Jr. and Edward. I know so little about my great grandmother since she had remarried a man named Rogers after the death of my great grandfather when my grandfather was quite young.
If you have any information you can share with me and I with you, I would be deeply appreciative.
Your cousin I-don't-know-how-many-times-removed,
Donna

James H. Wright/Sarah E. Goza

Note to Susan on the GOZA message board: I wanted to reply to your message in which you asked if this was my grandmother, but I somehow couldn’t figure out how I replied last time! Therefore, I’m posting a new message.

On Monday, 20 Oct 2003, I finally received a certified copy of my parents’ marriage record from California (which I had ordered on 4 Jun 2002). The particulars on the groom (my father) in which these two message boards would be interested in are as follows:
Full name: Walter Winford Wright	Birthplace: Alabama
Name of father: James H. Wright	Birthplace: Alabama
Name of mother: Sarah E. Goza	Birthplace: Alabama

This matches the 1900 census except, of course, Grandmother’s maiden name; also my dad’s name which had morphed from Walla W. to Wallie Winford by the time he got to California which was his home of record for entering the Army in 1918. I don’t know if this gets us any more “connected” to the three-year-old Sarah E. Goza in the 1870 census. In a previous message I mentioned that I had found a death record for Sarah E. Wright in 1909 which might be my grandmother. I learned today that I could order the microfilm, which I did. This microfilm contains volume 20 for 1909 from Alabama Deaths, 1908-59. This record contains, at a minimum, birth date and place, death date and place (which is already known – 25 Aug 1909, Tuscaloosa (County)), and age of deceased. More than likely it will contain parents’ names, too. And, maybe a widowed persons spouse. It also should have a relative’s signature. I’ll keep you posted.
Mary Goza in Mo.

I am searching for info on my gggrandmother, Mary Goza in Ste. Genevieve, Mo. I've been told she was born around 1800 in Ga. She had her first child, Silas Hartzell in 1820. She was married to Nicholas Hartzell who was from Stoystown, Somerset Co., Pa. He moved to Ste. Genevieve in 1814. I can't find a marriage record for Nicholas and Mary. Nicholas died in 1822, and Mary remarried Samuel Staples. They moved to Washington Co., Mo. and had 7 children. Mary died in 1855.

Per court documents in Ste. Genevieve, Mo., Nicholas's estate, Mary was the administrator. People who purchased items at the sale were Isaiah Goza, Michael Goza and Charles Goza. When Nicholas Hartzell died, the estate paid Michael Goza for coffin at grave, funeral expense.

Any info is appreciated.
