Thanks! Barbara Grab (Amand(us) Grab and Rosalina Klecker's daughter) is my Great Grandmother, so this is a direct hit. Joseph Grab named after first born son of Amand and Rosalina..

Another Grab Catholic story....Gustave Samp was Lutheran, Barbara Grab (his wife) was devoutly Catholic. In fact, the Catholic Church in Cecil was held in the front living room of the Samp house on Freeborn Street while the church was being built. Anyway, Barbara passed.....and Gustave was dying....so he was baptized Catholic so he could join his beloved Barbara in heaven.....

Emma's mother's name is Johanne Caroline Wilhelmine Winter and Emma's full name is Emma Caroline Augusta Winter. Emma married Wilhelm Martin Grab on 31 Mar 1894 in Shawano County, WI. His parents are Armand Grab and Rosalina.

They had a son, Joseph Grab, who was born ca 1895-1897 and died the same year he was born. The child may not have been baptized.

The story that has been passed down is that Wilhelm Martin was Catholic and Emma was Lutheran. When their child died the Catholic priest would not allow the child to be buried in the Catholic cemetery since the couple were not married before God (apparently they were married in a civil ceremony) or the child was not baptized in a Catholic ceremony.

Emma apparently was so upset with her husband - in that he couldn't arrange for a Christian burial for their child that she divorced him.

Tom

Grab family of Baden, Germany

My great grandfather, Charles (or Carl) Philipp Grab was born Oct 1864 in Baden, Germany. I suspect (but have not confirmed) that his father was Philipp Grab, 1832-aft 1900 and Anna Maria Huy, 1828-aft 1900.

According to what I found on the familysearch.org site, Philipp and Anna Maria were married 1861 in Dallau, Mosbach, Baden. They immigrated to the U.S. in 1867 in a party of 7 people. I know the names of the people in the party (in addition to Philipp and Anna Maria, Andreas (or Andrew), Orsa (or Rosine), Jacob, Carl Philipp, and Katharina. I believe they settled in the Dedham or Boston MA area.

I have found nothing about any of Charles/Carl's siblings (or possibly aunts/uncles).

Is anyone else researching this family? Do the names sound familiar?

Any help is appreciated.

Betty

Some of the names you mention coincide with names in my family but I don't believe that they are the same. There was a Mary Grab, maiden name unknow, she married a Robert Grab. She was born many years before 1964 and she and her husband Robert had 19 chldren. I am sure one of those 19 had to be named Mary but never knew the family to live in California. They had their roots around Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Robert was the son of George Grab. George was my father's brother (Henry Grab) and the whole family had their roots in Columbia, Pennsylvania. Strangely enough my brother's name was Donald, actually Henry Donald Grab. If you think that any of this is in any way connected with the search that you are conducting please let me know and I will help in any way that I can. Jim Grab

Her mother Katherine Kerr had three children, and put them up for addoption, 2 of the girls have the name of Lippert and Mary retained her birth name. At one point we were told her father was Donald Grab but are not sure. We havent had much luck with the adoption board. If you can help us at all please, email me, we are trying to locate mother also.

Thank you

Elisabeth
Was your Grab family Catholic? There were three Grab families in Monroe County. One family based in Webster/Penfield was Luthern. Mine was Catholic. I have researched the family back to Bavaria and the Father of my GGGrandfather Joseph Grab (b. 1820) was George (married to a Margaretha). I never considered before that we were related to your family, although the coincidence is interesting. Anyway, if your family is Catholic then maybe it deserves a better look?

Nancy
I mention the religion thing because it was such a big deal back then. ALL catholics were buried in Catholic cemeteries. So if you have a German Grab in a municipal cemetery you can be (almost) sure they were Luthern and the families not related.
The RGS is cheap ($15), the news letter is meager. The guy to contact is Richard Halsey. He is Great and could help you. He does it for hire. He is responsible for the web site too. But I think if you just contact the website you can get the MT Hope infor, and they may even sell it.
A check of the City or Town Directories for 1900 would tell us if your George was a Mailman. Have you located him on the 1900 Census? Anyway, If you want a copy of the article email me your address at shiftworks@aol.com
Herb

I have a local news article with a photo of George Grabb delivering mail in Irondequoit (north of Rochester) in 1900. He has a beard, looks robust. I am quite sure its your George. Does it sound right?
This is not my family as they were not Catholic.
Oh, the Mt Hope records are being (almost done) computerized by the Rochester Genealogical Society. I already threw out the latest newsletter with the web site, but you can request look-ups I think.
Herb Grabb

Joseph Grab in Monroe County

I am the Great Great Grandson of Joseph Grab who came to Rochester in 1845, from Bavaria. There were actually 3 different Grab families in the Monroe County area at that time. My family was catholic. One of the others was Luthern, and the 3rd I am not sure. I do have information on all three.

My name is James Clifford Grab but I am not your grandfather. I find it unbelievable that there are two (maybe more) persons with the same name. There is a James Grab from a family of 19 children in Harrisburg, Pa. and they are 2nd cousins but I know that his middle name is not Clifford. I always believed that my ancestors came from Germany but now have reason to believe that Grab may be derived from Grabowsky or some similar form of that name so maybe I am descended from Polish (Jewish) stock) I was told by my Father that my Greatgrandfather's first name was Peter and that he came from Germany. My Father was raised around Coumbia, Pa. Do you have any relatives from that area?

Elizabeth,
Do you have any knowledge whether John George Grab came to this country with any siblings? Or how he came? Family lore here says that Joseph A. Grab came from southern Germany (Bavaria?) but he came over on a cattle boat rather than a passenger ship. Any similar stories in your line?

Joseph Grabb in Monroe Co.

The family I am researching (John) George Grab(b). b. 3/16/1842 in Baden Baden, Germany, married in Rochester to Helen Kissel Barth in 1870. He died and was buried in Mt. Hope 4/17/1916. Now there is an older George Grab, who supposedly died and was buried in Mt. Hope in 1892. Ht was 47 years and born in Germany. His wife's name was Margaret ?? It is interesting that 3 Grab families came to this area at the same time. I have been to Mt. Hope in search of the Grabs, didn't find much as the woman there to help you was rather caustic and unpleasant. It was a great cemetery though.

Any help you have would be great. I don't know if I have anything to return the favor though.

I am doing the Grab's for my daughters as this is my married name. I do know that John George b. 1842-1916 had 11 children:
Elizabeh Helen b. 187?, Bertha Helen, b. 1872,Lydia Christine, b. 1873, Emelia Sophie, b. 1878, Ida Eugene, b. 1879, John George, Jr. b 1880, Leonard William, b. 1883, Alfred John (my line) 1885, Adam Herbert b. 1887, Gertrude b. 1889 and Austine Frederic, b. 1891. Whew!

Nancy Hermance Grab

Herb,

Thanks for the quick response. I have no idea what the Grab's back then looked like or their religion. My ex-husband's parents were Christian Scientists. Go figure! Would it be worth my while to join the Rochester Geneological Society? I have one of their applications. I know that some Grabs were in the Ironequit area.

Does anyone your area have church record complications on-line or for sale? These have helped me greatly in the Hudson Valley where I live in researching my Dutch lines.

I tried immigration ships on-line to look for Grabs. No hits on the names I am familiar with. Most of my info came from death certificates.

Nancy G.

She is posted on the message board. I have run Grab thru Ancestry.familiew.aol.com-Social Security Death Index Search and found a zillion deceased relatives, many born in New Orleans.
The records do not go back very far-late 1800's only. Hope this helps you. Keep in touch!

My father was born in 1912 in New Orleans. There are so many bits and pieces of information. We need to get all the pieces together and work from there-in one direction. I don't see how we will find roots unless we are all organized. I think a good starting point would be for everyone to put their known roots in order, working back from themselves-information that is known. I think going backward is the answer. We can't start from a place we do not know. Suggestions?
