Grabeck vs. Gerbig

Could this name be spelled differently? My maiden name is Gerbig. As I was growing up in Watertown, WI my name was spelled many different ways by everyone except family members.
There were some Van or Von Gerbig families in Connecticut that I found during my research on the Internet. I haven't connected them with my line, yet, but I think some still live in CT.
You may try being inventive on the name spelling or use the soundex index more to find some possible links. You may email me directly at mgsiferd@hotmail.com or send message on message board for others to try to connect, too.
Marie

I guess I didn't ask you about Von or Van Gerbig. I found that name in Connecticut, too. Have you come across that name in you searches? Thanks. Marie

Frank Grabeck

I am looking for information about Frank Grabeck who was my great-grandfather. He was married to Elizabeth Cerula and lived in New Britain, CT., in the late 1800s. Two of their children were William J. Grabeck(b. 1896) and Francis Grabeck (b. 1901). There wer other children since my grandmother was the 8th child although only 5 children were living. Does anyone have any information about the Grabecks of New Britain, CT?

Connecticut Grabecks

Thank you for your suggestion. I don't believe the Grabecks are related to the Gerbigs. After a second search of the entire town of New Britain, Ct. in the 1910 Census I found the family I was looking for. I also found a petition for naturalization submitted by Frank Grabeck in 1904. All of the information I've found has the name as Grabek or Grabak or Grabeck.

Grabecks in New Britain

Frank,

Thank you for your reply to my posting. My relatives originally spelled their name Grabek. I am not certain at what point or for what reason it was changed to Grabeck. The name seems quite rare so I'm hoping that there may be some connection here. My great-grandfather Frank Grabek was born April 28, 1859 in Russia/Poland. He arrived in the United States on April 28, 1888. His wife Elizabeth Cerula and their son John arrived in 1890. They had 4 other children born in New Britain: Mary b. 1882, Joseph b. 1892, William b. 1896, Frances (my grandmother) b. 1901. I know nothing of Frank's parents. Someone named Raymond Grabek lived with the Grabek family about 1911 and 1912 when they lived on Putnam St. in New Britain. I suspect he was a brother of Frank though I have no proof. It seems possible that Michael and Frank could have been brothers because of the last name, country of birth and time frame. I would like to be able to make the connection. I'm going to be ordering some microfilm of the Hale collection of obituaries and cemetery inscriptions at the LDS Family Center after the holidays. I will keep you up to date on what I find. I also will be making more trips to the National Archives. We live in a great area for genealogical research.

Frank,

I wanted to give you my e-mail address in case these messages on the message board get deleted after a period of time. I can be reached at jheyob@erols.com. I am trying to sort out which Grabecks in New Britain belong to my family tree and which to yours. I've found several entries in the Social Security Index and in the CT Death Index but am not sure how they all relate. Can you send me any definite information you have if you have more than what you mentioned in your last message? This is what I have that is definite.

Frank Grabek (b. April 28, 1859 in Russia Poland, arrived in US April 1888) married Elizabeth Cerula (b. abt 1866 in Germany, arrived in US 1890). Their children were John Grabek (b. 1882), Mary Grabek (b. 1892), Joseph Grabek (b. 1893), Willam J. Grabek (b.1896), Frances Grabek (b. 1901). I know that William S. Grabeck (b. 1929, d. 1999)is part of my family but I'm not sure of how he fits in. Thanks for any information you can give.

Sharon

Gerbig in Connecticut

Your mention of Connecticut interests me. I am researching Caroline Gerbig (1810-1877) who is buried in New Haven Connecticut. Her grave is located in the very same plot with my gggrandparents(their surname was Leopold--my gggrandmother's maiden name was Hucke/Huke.) They came from Germany in the mid-1800's, possibly from Prussia. They may have had some connection to Pennsylvania before arriving in Connecticut. Do you have any clues that might help me? The only additional information is that Caroline may have been receiving a Civil War pension (and my gggrandfather was also in the Civil War, so conceivable that could have been a connection for them.)

Grabecks in New Britain

Hi Sharon,
I noticed your posting. Although the spellings are slightly different I thought they could possibly be from the same family. My father's name was also Frank but he was born in Granby CT in 1916. There were 14 children 12 who made it to adulthood. Three were born in New Britain, Stanley in 1905, Mary in 1906 who died shortly after being born, and Pauline in 1908 who will be 92 this February. My Grandfather was Michael Julius Grabek born in Warmjak Poland/Russia in 1874 and he had two brothers named Jozef born 1856 and John whom I am not sure of what date he was born. There were probably other brothers and sisters as well. If any of this ties in with your family let me know.
