Hi Sue, My great grandfather was Julius (the son), eldest child of Justus and Margaret, my grandfather was Herman Sr., My dad was Herman, Jr.

I have a fairly extensive tree put together, but I do not show you as a grandchild of George Henry, so I am obviously missing some folks! i would love to trade information with you, and can send you a pdf of my tree, if you wish.

In the meantime, I know of 4 additional Grabensteins who are members of religious orders:
Monsignor Henry Francis Graebenstein, and his sisters Loretta Catherine (Sr. Mary Regina) and Mary Margaret (Sr. Mary Justus) were the children of Francis (Justus & Margaret's 6th child). Note that they changed the spelling of the family name, for unknown reasons.

The 4th is my own brother Joseph, who is a Christian Brother.

Let me know if you want to trade trees - contact me directly at jegrabenstein@verizon.net

Happy hunting, Jane

I am trying to locate the identities of any grandchildren or ggrandchildren of either Justice or his brother Julius, who entered the religious life as priests or nuns.
Some family names include, of course Grabenstein, then Detterman, Dressman, Miltenberger, Liedinger, Reichert, Laing, Gellner and Mattingly. My grandfather was George Henry (Justus and Margarets 12th born child)(M) to Catherine Elizabeth Detterman. Their daughter Mary Ursula became an Ursuline nun- Sister Georgine Grabenstein.
I have title names, but having trouble identifing them by birth names.
If anyone can possibly help me, it would be most appreciated. Thanks/ Sue in Fl.

Hi and thanks for the invite (By the way, which date is it, 6/12 or 6/22? Both are listed), but there's no way I can make it on this short notice...6 months ago I may have been able to plan for it.

Anyway, I would be more than happy to send you my tree information to see if we can find a common ancestor or 2. If you're interested, contact me directly at jegrabenstein@verizon.net
Have fun, hope to hear from you, Jane

Hi Cherry (I presume - don't see a signature), nice to "meet" you. Sorry for the delay, I just got home from my Christmas vacation, home to Cumberland to see my mom & brothers - I live in Pittsburgh.
Your great uncle Justus was the son of Julius & Susan Grabenstein. That Julius had a brother named Justus. He is / was my great grandfather. His SON Julius (it gets confusing!) was my great-grandfather.
I would be happy to share all of my data with you - I am especially interested in anything you might have about Julius the brother, Susan's husband. He is one of my brick walls, along with his children & their families.
Please feel free to email me directly at jegrabenstein@verizon.net

Happy New Year!
Hi Jane- Eileen here in Florida, Walter's wife. Interested in the photo you describe. We've found the village of Windehausen,Germany, about 10 miles East of Nordhausen, Germany and maybe 30 miles north of Erfurt. We found it online, as German travel maps don't show the detail. Have you any new family info?
Did you ever contact Latreacha Tufo? Saw her old message. I found Grabensteins buried in St. Joseph Cemetery, Cambria, County, Pa- about 10 of them.
Eileen and Walt

I would really like to go to Germany and meet English -speaking Grebenstein relatives somewhere, perhaps in the town of Grebenstein or Windehausen (which is about 10 miles east of Nordhausen) or wherever else we can find them.

More than 800 Grabens in the United States are descendants of Louis Graben, born June 27, 1829 in Prussia and immigrating to the United States via Ellis Island in 1854. We have been unable to trace lineage to any Grabens earlier that Louis Graben. The family name appears to have been recorded as Grabe at Ellis Island at least once in 1954 and may also be derived from Grabenstein or other similar name. please respond if your research links the two surnames.

Hi Becky - I'm wondering if your Leidingers may be related to a ggaunt of mine - supposedly a Susan or Susanna Leidinger married my great great uncle Julius Grabenstein in Allegany Co., MD in about 1864 & had at least 4 children: Catherine, Joseph, Francis & Mary Ann (based on the 1870 census entry). They have sort of disappeared after that, although there's some evidence that at least some of his children, including some not yet born when the 1870 census was enumerated, moved to Cambria County (Johnstown) PA. I'd be happy to share/compare information. Thanks, Jane

hi Jane,
i am not sure if there was any Grabenstein's in my family lineage.. the only one i really knew was my GGrandmother Florence(Frey) Leidinger(1896-1990). she married John C Leidinger(1883-1961) about 1913 had four female children. his father was John also(censuses states Jr & Sr's) his mother was Caroline ?, both born abt 1860. His father John(Sr) was born in germany and mother in Ohio. tho the majority of my family is in and was from Ohio... there may have been some in PA.
i believe there is a lady named Elwyn Frey, she has my Frey/Leidinger names also... tho she said that i was no line form her... u maybe tho.. seeing u r asking about PA... and she stated some from there as well as NY also! she has a group at yahoo called: Frey@yahoogroups.com
give her a message.. it never hurts to ask... that is how i got as far as i have :)
if i happen to come across that name(Grabenstein) in my search of more Leidingers i will let u know... been trying to do all of mine here and there...
til then
thnx for the message and U NEVER KNOW?? :)
becky

He was my great great grandfather and died in 1891 in Illinois. He has been very difficult to trace.

I am looking for information on my husband's grandfather, Charles Lee Grabenstein. He was married to Emily Louisa Mathews Grabenstein (21 Jun 1895 - 19 Jan 1987) and they lived in Letcher, SD with their 5 children (LeRoy, Albert, Maxine, Raymond, and Florence). Apparently they divorced and Charles moved to Missouri.

We do not know if he remarried. My husband did not know the family. Charles (14 Sept 1884 - 17 Dec 1957) died in Missouri. We are not sure of these dates for Charles. My husband remembers going to a big house in Missouri for Charles funeral. He remembers an older woman and the house had no electricity. He believes the funeral was around 1957 when he was around 10 years old.

Can anyone provide more information on Charles and the Grabenstein family. We cannot get past this point. We do not know anything about Charles.

K. Carter
kcarter@staffnet.com

Gary,

I'm also doing research on the Grabenstein family. It's taken me a while, but I think I have finally figured out who you are. If I'm correct, your father was Joseph Grabenstein, born 1920 in PA. His father was Justus George Grabenstein, born 1877 in Maryland, married Gertrude Erlinger. Justus's father was Julius Grabenstein, born about 1834 in Germany, married Susanna Leidinger. Julius was the brother of Justus Grabenstein who settled in Cumberland, MD. I'm descended from Justus of Cumberland. If I'm correct, I am your 3rd cousin, once removed. I would be happy to hear from you & share information. - Kathy
