Grabham family in Somerset

Thought I'd throw in my five-eighths.

My earliest known Grabham is my GGG-grandfather, Samuel Grabham, who married Martha Mullins at Evercreech on June 10th 1788. I have a note that he may have been naptised in Wembdon. the family subsequently came here to Bath. Any connections?

Do you really mean your GGGF died in 1954? Or do you mean 1854? William is rather a common name. Do you know the Christian name(s) of his wife or any of his children which would help to identify the correct person on the census? Do you know whereabouts in Wales he lived? That would also help to identify him.

Hi,
Thanks for that info, but do you know who Susuannah Hutchings parents were? and where she was born. The year was about 1736.
I am tracing my husband's female line. Andrew is descended from Rebecca and Christopher's daughter Susannah ,then her daughter Sara Rosa House Burrough, then Mary Burrough Harding to Mary Florence Peet who was his grandmother.
So Rebecca is his 4xgreat grandmother.
Any info further back would be appreciated. Thanks
Marianne
I don't know whether we are of the same Grabham stock, but I suspect that we might be. My Grabham line to date peters out with Samuel Grabham who married Martha Mullins in 1788 at Evercreech which isn't on the same side of Somerset admittedly, but on the other hand they were clearly "in transit2 as they moved here to Bath soon afterwards. I'd be interested to know whether your line might include a spare Samuel (!).

Regards,

Colin Hunt

Hi,
You mentioned Durham Grabhams. Grabham is only a side shoot I discovered when investigating my GGrandfather Thomas Hancock who was brought up as Thomas Grabham till he married when his Hancock surname was revealed to him.The story that was circulated to subsequent generations was that he was adopted as a baby from Hancocks in another part of the country.
However we found out that he was the illegitimate son of Mary Hancock who, a couple of years later, married George Grabham in New Coundon Co. Durham, who was born 1830 in South Cowton, Yorkshire. I don't think George acknowledged Thomas as his son, and neither parents were at Thomas's wedding in 1867. However the Grabhams later had a daughter Mary Ann Grabham who witnessed her half-brother's? wedding at the age of 15. Mary Grabham(nee Hancock) may have been already dead but certainly by 1871 census George Grabham is a widower with his 18 year-old daughter listed as housekeeper! he died early too, 3 June 1873. I do not know what happened to Mary Ann Grabham, whether she married or not. Because George doesn't seem to feature genetically in my line, I have not investigated his Yorkshire roots, so the story ends there, but these are a couple of names which may or may not have appeared in your lists. I have George and Mary's MC

Dear Sara
Sorry for the delay in replying - as you say, life gets in the way.
Yes, Fred Grabham was Stanley's father. He was born in 1886 at Yarcombe, the son of John Grabham, born 1852 also at Yarcombe.
Fred married Nancy Clarke, born 1893 at Whitestaunton. John was married to Eliza Street, born 1856 at Buckland St. Mary.
I'm hoping to eventually find a link between these Grabham's on my husband's side and the Chardstock Grabhams I am descended from. I think it will be way back though.
Any info you are willing to share would be much appreciated.
Regards
Eileen

Dear Alan, Have just read your note on the Grabhams. My Grandmother was Sarah Powell, nee Grabham. Sarah was born 13 April 1857, the daughter of Edward Grabham (agricultural labourer) and Sarah Grabham, nee Trott. On Edward and Sarah's marriage certificate in 1839 in Donyatt Church (4 miles from Bishopswood and Buckland St Mary) Edward is quoted as living in Sea, in Ilminster and his father is given as John Grabham, Labourer. Do you have any more information on this family. Many thanks, Susan

Thanks for the quick reply. I was surprised to find so many Grabhams mentioned in England and abroad. So far Iknow that there is only my family in Edinburgh but unfortunately it was too difficult to get information out of my grandfather before he died.
My father is James Sinclair Grabham, as was my grandfather.
His parents were George William and Mary Ann (Knight) Grabham whom I believe were married 9 July 1903 in Glasgow. George William parents were George William and Elizabeth Ann (Moffat) Grabham. Unfortunately I got a bit stuck there a few months ago and gave up. Curiosity what it is has spurred me on again. Is there an easy-ish way to gain access to parish records.

Grabhams ~Ilminster or Bridgewater Som

My husbands gr. grand father was Eli Grabham born 1860 and a bricklayer by trade. He was the son of John Grabham (a gardener and and Harriet ? (from Kilmington Devon). Eli had two brothers, John and William (both did not marry) and two sisters...Mary and Elizabeth (who married John Pring). There is also a rumoured third brother who came to Canada...but we cannot locate him. Eli married Mary Ann (Polly) Bailey in 1884. Mary Ann was the daughter of Thomas (shophand) and Mary Bailey. Mary Ann had two brothers and one sister. The sister who may of been Mary J. married a Mr Bulgin and they lived around the London area. So did the two brothers.

Eli and Harriet had 6 children..John (came to Canada..married late in life), FLORENCE ELIZABETH (Bessie, died at 7 years), HARRIET (died as a little one), FRED (came to Canada, married Maud Phillips and had 2 sons and 2 daughters), ALBERT (died as a baby), CHARLES.

John came to Canada in 1905 and Fred and Charlie came in 1909 after their father died. (rumoured that he had a bit too much to drink and fell off of a bridge and drowned!) Their mother died 10 years previous.

Thanks
~Marlene~

My mother is a Grubham, descended from Robert Grubham, b. 12/10/1815 in Lyme, Dorsetshire England??? according to old family records. He came to the USA as a youth, perhaps with his parents, but I have not yet found their names. Earliest records I have found for Robert were in Bradford County Pennsylvania in 1843.

Hi, Sara

I'm afraid I keep track of my Grabhams the old-fashioned way--on paper. Here's what I have.

My GGG grandfather was George Grabham and he married Elizabeth Gill. Dates unknown. They had at least two children: William and George. George (my GG grandfather) was born 16 January 1848 in Durham. He married Mary Ward in 1870. His occupation was oil merchant at first, then he became a shoemaker. I have a photo of him. George and Mary had three children: Jane Ann (born around 1879, John George, born around 1873, and Meggie, born 19 October 1871. Meggie was my G grandmother. John George married Dorothy Venus and they had about ten children (let me know if you want their names). Meggie married James Oliver on 24 January 1889. She died around 1916. If there's any connection, let me know. Good hunting.

Thank you for the extra details: I don't think I go go back any earlier than you have been as unfortunately my records on the Grabhams in the NE are not good: all I can add is the family on the 1881 census if you have not seen it. There are a couple of people who have posted to this list who are interested in the familiy in this area though: perhaps one of them can help you.

I'm disappointed not to be able to help you more.

Regards

Are they grandfather and son? I know that Stanley was the son of a Frederick but is Frederick the son of John?
There is quite a concentration of Gr*bhams in the Chardstock/Hawkchurch area of Dorset. Unfortunately it is not an area I have looked at in detail yet:( I would suggest that would be a good place to start.

I will keep your message in my file so that when I do look at those registers I can let you know if I find anything relevant and I would be interested to know if you find Robert's parents or baptism.

Regards

How nice to hear from you. Grubham is a rare variant spelling in England and Wales but I have noticed that it appears to turn up more frequently in America (I take it that you are in America, judging from your e-mail address).
Hello, I am a Grabham and I'm just starting on the quest for the origin of the name. I was born in Edinburgh and so far have gone back four generations. I hadn't realised just how time consuming the search is if you have no dates for birth deathor marriage. If you've had any leads in scotland or any insights you don't mind sharing I'd be very grateful.
Yours hopeful
Karen grabham
I have Grabhams in both my and my husband's family.
The earliest I have in mine is John Grabham born 1807 at Hawkchurch married to Jane(maiden name unknown) born 1824 at Thorncombe. These Grabhams lived at Chardstock in 1881 where my great grandmother, Keturah, was born in 1858.

On my husband's side, I have yet another John Grabham, born 1852 at Yarcombe. My father-in -law was Stanley Grabham who I believe was born at Buckland St. Mary in 1919
If you have any information I would be very grateful
