Hello everyone, my name is Genevieve Gracia Flores. I recently became curious where my middle name came from. I use it very proudly, it is my mother's last name. She was born in Sonora, Mexico, where we have a big Gracia family. When having conversations with my great uncle's who are still living they share stories of their upbringing and, they all too reside in Sonora, Mexico. My mother, five sisters and I all reside in Arizona. Yes, I can relate, Garcia is not my name, it's Gracia.

Hi Maria,
I am in this family tree also and found information on labs.familysearch.org under Records.
Santiago Gracia and Ma Guadalupe Cantu were married January 3, 1844 in San Felipe De Jesús, China, Nuevo León, Mexico. General Bravo I have learned is also called Rancho del Toro, and this area is near China, Nuevo Leon. I find all the family records listed in China at San Felipe.
I do not have nor find a San Juana Gracia, except married to a Nicolas Alanis.
Contact me to share more information at rettagee at yahoo.

The only connection that I have to Gracia is my Great Great Great Grandmother Eliza Gracia. I don't know much about her except that she was married to Zenon Garcia and had 5 children. She was born in the late 1880's early 1890's and that she lived in several places around Puerto Rico but finally settled in and around Carolina where the next 2 generations where raised. If anyone else has managed to get their family charts back that far and finds we are connected please let me know.

Hola, Aaron!
Well, thank you for your kind words! Unfortunately, my knowldege is limited to the information provided by relatives.Yes, you are right. What I know is that my family came from a town named San Fernando, Tamaulipas (right in the Northeastern coast). There was 5 siblings: Pedro, Cayetano, Carlos, Ricardo and Luz Gracia-Cardiel. Ricardo decided to stay and continue fishing shrimp in the Laguna Madre until his dead several years ago. The rest migrated to Matamoros, Tamaulipas and formed families there. My Father says that his tia Luz still live in Brownsville and his tios Cayetano and Pedro passed away about two years ago (my grandfather died when I was ten). My Father (Carlos Gracia-Canales)keeps close contact with his immediate cousins and he and my grandmother have more information about the family history. One thing my grandfather used to say: "If your last name is Gracia and your family came from San Fernando, we are relatives".
I hope this information will help you.
Gracias y nos vemos!
Carlos

She married my
gg grandfather Eugenio Matos and probably lived in Barrio Cedro Abajo or Cedro Arriba of Naranjito. They were the parents of my g grandmother Delfina Matos Gracia who died in Corozal in 1899. Could you give me names of your parents, grandparents, etc. to see if we can make a connection.
Leonard

Let me tell you what I know and maybe we can put a whole story together. My great-grandfather was Benjamin Magnett and according to my grandmother Helena named for the island of St. Helena and who's middle name was Watson this being the maiden name of her grand-mother (Ann (Watson) Magnett, Benjamin's mother the records here state that his mother was Ann and father was Benjamin. Benjamin married my great-grandmother Emma in 1887 he was 45 and she was 25 I have a copy of their marriage cert. According to grandma Benjamin came with more than one brother seems that she said there where as many as ten but there where those who wanted to move on and ventured to the midwest we don't know how far they went my grandmother Helena died in 1986 at the age of 91 and her sister died in 1998 at the age of 98 just before her 99th birthday.
Joseph and Mary Gracia

Joseph was born around 1849 in the Azores. He arrived in America between 1860 and 1880 (conflicting info). His wife was Mary Silva. She was born there in about 1851. They lived in Rhode Island under the last name Grace for some time. I found birth records for at least two of the children there. They later relocated to Santa Cruz California where the rest of their lives they were known as Gracia. I understand that surnames changed a great deal with Portuguese immigrants so this makes tracing them more complicated. If anyone has information or even some tips on how to further my research please contact me.

Karla,

Just read your info with a great deal of curiosity.

My mother's side of the family came from the state of Durango, Mexico (DERAS was her maiden name) , and we have been trying to locate the origin of the name DERAS. Family lore had indicated someone may have been french.

We had been unable to document the name as Spanish, Basque, Portuguese, or Italian.

However, just recently we've come across info that the name DERAS evolved in the Northern part of France. Though we haven't found anyone connected directly back to France (we're still researching our family genealogy), your story may have opened up another possiblity.

It's interesting to note that more than one frenchmen may have been traveling to Mexico to work lumber...maybe...I'll add this to our search?

Regards
Tony

I must say that I am quite impressed with your knowledge of the history of the Gracia surname in Mexico. My maternal grandfather was from the Northeastern coast of Mexico, near Matamoros, before he crossed into Texas and settled in Mercedes, TX. His name was Juan Gracia, and married Maria Sauceda, whose family was also from just south of the Matamoros area. As for Juan physical features, and those of his family as I have been told, are light-complected, light colored hair and colored eyes. These genes are strong and and shared by many of my Gracia relatives.

Hola Carlos!

Thank you very much for replying. The information you supplied me was very interesting. I called my mother today to ask her if any of the names sounded familiar. She did tell me that your uncle Pedro's name sounded very familiar. She remembers her father and mother, Juan and Maria Gracia, use the name on occasions.

My mother, whose name is also Maria, gave me the names of her father's siblings: Manuel, Luis, Inez, Trinidad and Candida. Her father Juan was originally named Jose, but his mother changed Jose's name to Juan after her husband, Juan Gracia, died. In addition, the elder Juan Gracia married his cousin, whose last name was also Gracia. The younger Juan and his siblings grew up in San Fernando, and moved to Matamoros, Brownsville and Mercedes when they became older.

The younger Juan married Maria Sauceda, whose family was also from south of Matamoros. They had nine children: Dora, Carlos, Elida, Amelia, Juan, Maria (my mother), Roberto, Alonzo, and Mario. Each one in turn had several children of their own. Now, the family has spread out from Mercedes to Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Houston, and me, who lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan. There still are several that remain in Mercedes.

I hope that this information is helpful to you. Over the last few years, my mother and some of her siblings have become very interested in researching their ancestral roots. They have been very succesful in compiling an extended list of their Sauceda side. They even held a family reunion with all the long lost Saucedas in July, 2000. Now I am sure that they would want to do the same for their Gracia side. So if you have any additional information, we will be one step closer to holding a Gracia reunion. As you said in your reply, we probably are related.

Adios for now!

Aaron

Hello. My name is David C. Gracia and my Grandfather was born in the city of Elephant Butte, NM. I know he moved his family to California sometime before 1939. They moved to the town of Guasti, where there was a large grape vineyard and my father and his brothers along with the rest of the family spent time picking the fruit of the vines. Could anybody else provide me with more information? Thanks.
p.s.doesnt it get you mad when people try to spell the name GARCIA?
