Carl Otto Albert GRADE, born July 26 1868 in Posen, Prussia

Carl Grade was born in Posen, Prussia on July 26 1868. His parents were Albert GRADE and Louise GLANDER.

Carl was the brother of Wilhelmine GRADE (see the earlier posting by Robert Radke).

The Grade family emmigrated to Volhenia (to the west of Kiev) most likely in the 1870s.

Contact with Robert Radke was made through this message board posting, which shows the power of adding messages to the Grade Family Board.

Regards, Leo

Russian-German Grades

There are excellent resources on Germans who lived in Russia and immigrated to North America in the German-Russian Genealogical Library at http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/odessa.html

The best way to find GRADEs in the library is to use the Search Engine at http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/search.html with GRADE as the "Search String".

You will have to search for each Data Category, but the results (with links) are excellent. Note that searching on "History Books" will return a large number of "grade schools."

Carl Otto Albert GRADE, born c. 1868, near Kiev

I'm looking for information on Carl Otto Albert GRADE, born in 1868 or 1869, in "a small town near Kiev", most likely in eastern Volhynia. Carl was of German ancestry and a strict Baptist.

He married Caroline Temperance Wales around 1905, possibly in Chicago, and moved to Los Angeles, CA. It's possible he came through Canada on his way to the US, but his wherabouts in North America before 1906 are only conjecture.

Carl and Caroline had three children: Margaret C (b. 1907), Paul Sidney (b. 1909), and James E (b. 1913).

Any information would be much appreciated.

Best Regards, Leo
lwlittle@yahoo.com

Albert GRADE

I am looking for information on Albert GRADE who was married to Louise GLANDER (d. ca. 1912, Russia). I know of 2 children:
1. Wilhelmine GRADE (b. 1860; d. 1930, High Prairie, Alberta)
2. Wilhelm GRADE (b. 7 May, 1875 at Alexandrowka, Volhynia, Russia (presently w. Ukraine))

Wilhelmine GRADE married first to Julius RADKE (d. ca. 1891, Volhynia, Russia) second to Jakob DREFS, with whom she emigrated to Canada in 1909. Most descendants are in Canada.

There were other GRADE couples living in the area very near where Albert and Louise GRADE lived, and we suspect a connection to at least some of them because some of the names appear as godparents of the children of Wilhelmine (GRADE) RADKE and Julius RADKE.

They all lived in the Heimthal Parish of Volhynia to the north-west of Zhitomir, and in particular in the towns of Josephine, Marianowka, Alexandrowka, Tschernjawka and Solodyri. The names of the other GRADE couples were:
1. Auguste GRADE married to Hermann BAUMANN on 10 Feb. 1876. (children Maria Martha, Anna Louise, Emilie Wanda, and Auguste Mathilde)
2. Michael or Johann GRADE, married to Juliana KLAR on 22 June, 1877(?) (children Louise and Maria Anne)
3. Christian GRADE married to Sarah GRONKE on 20 Feb 1872.
4. Louise GRADE married to August GRAMS on 29 Mar, 1877.

Any information about any of these people that might connect any of them, descendants or where they may have lived prior to migrating to Volhynia (most likely Poland, possibly Prussia or Pomerania a few generations before that) would be welcome. I have comprehensive information about descendants of Wilhelmine GRADE (my ggrandmother) that I would be happy to share.
