We go back to Hans Jacob Graff born in Switzerland and brought his wife and kids to Clarion County (the Venango Co) in early 1800. He married Anna Marie Ochs. Hans died in 1828 and is buried in Wentlings Corners. We have not connected to any others in PA. They went pretty much directly to Northwestern PA with other Swiss families.

I have not connected to Hans Jacob Graff so am not sure our Graffs came from Switzerland, but it's very possible. Our first known ancestor was Johan Matthias Graff and what we know is on page 205 of the Groff Book, Vol. 2. If you
have information that might connect us, please contact me at sylviaburnside@sbcglobal.net.

I tried clicking on your name and it shows a profile, but I can't find the family tree. I guess I am back to when Hans Jacob Graff came over from Switzerland and setteled in Clarion Co. I have most of the information on the family from there on down.

I finally found the correct 1880 census through Heritage Quest, by using Graff, the spelling on the Ancestry summary view. I will leave a comment on Ancestry and hope they make the change. The good news is that in doing all this I found a Chicago voter registration for Anton Graf, with his address and year of naturalization.

Thanks for the offer of help.

1880 U.S. Census for Anton Graf, found by Ancestry, brings up a summary view with what appears to be accurate information for the family but the view of the original document is for someone with Surname Anton, and no relationship to the summary. I checked the previous and following pages but Anton Graf was not listed there, either.

Does anyone have a copy of the correct original page?

Jacob Graff family reunions

Jacob Graff (1817-1903) emigrated from Lambsheim, Germany to Niagara County, New York, about 1840 with his mother and five siblings. Starting in 1912, his descendants had annual reunions at various locations in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan. These reunions were held jointly with descendants of John Zink because the Zink and Graff families had intermarried. Records of these reunions, with a name index, can be found on my web site at http://sites.google.com/site/johnzinkfamily/

Yes, Emil was married to Juliet Charlotte Roulet. I remember her...she was my mother's grandmother.
The family is mostly in St. George. My uncle's in Ivins, one cousin in Salt Lake. Don't know if anyone's in Santa Clara, but it's very close to St. George.
You can find the information I have on my family tree (Diana Roberts). I think you can access it through ancestry.com
I have some pictures I could look through. I know I have one of Grandma Graff (JCR) and one of my cousin and/or uncle by a rock that Emil wrote his name on.
When I get time, I can scan them and send them to you or post them in the family tree.

The best possible way to answer that is to quote the first paragraph of the Preface to the book:

"The purpose of the Groff Book Volume 2: A Continuing Saga is to connect as accuratelyas possible the five generations of Groff families presented in 1985 in The Groff Book Volume 1: A Good Life in a New Land to the generations o these families who lived in Europe before coming to North America, and also to the generations of these families living in 1997."

Part 1 is European Families and starts with the Graf Families of Baretswil, Zurich, Switzerland around 1356. The rest of the book comes forward in time.

I'm not sure if there are any references to Canada anywhere in the book, but then again I haven't read the whole book. If you have a specific person or persons you are looking for, there is an index and I can see if they are listed.

John Wolfe
Sherman, Texas

I do not know if that is where the ancestor came from but I seem to always end up there when researching. Perhaps it is the correct area. My original ancestor in the USA is Jacob Graff married to Elisabeth Graff and according to the son's marriage record they lived in Philadelphia (the city) Penn. in 1790 when he married in Canada. I have all the info from him on down but cannot find those two. Thanks Valerie Graff Butterfield rbutterf@mnsi.net
Hi Valery,

I am also looking for information for Jacob Greff/Graff and Isabelle/Elizabeth Greff. Their son Jean m. Amable Martin 26 Apr 1790 in Les Cedres, Soulanges, Quebec.

The url below directs you to the Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Scroll down the column on the left until you find Genealogy. They hold the Old St. Joseph Baptism Records 1758 - 1810 and Marriage Records 1758 - 1836. The information and fees for research are listed on their genealogy page. I just found this information and have not contacted them.

http://www.rc.net/philadelphia/pahrc/

Good luck with your search.

Elaine

My grandfather had a brother named Stanley who was born in the 1920s...maybe your Stanley is an uncle? I would love to see your information. Thanks!

Biography of Hans (John) Graff, Born 1661 in Switzerland

Please Note: I am not related to this family, I simply volunteer my time to help others find their ancestry.

As published in:
A Biographical History of Lancaster County
by: Alexander Harris 1872

GRAFF, Hans, (John), a native of Switzerland, born in 1661, was one of the first pioneers of Lancaster county, who settled in it as early as the year 1717, when the district in which he chose his future home was comparatively a howling wilderness, still inhabited by the tawny races of the new world, lie belonged to the pious but persecuted sect of religionists in Europe, the Mennonites, against whom the sword of intolerance was unsheathed; and it was to escape the destruction that seemed to threaten the devoted followers of Menno Simon, that the subject of our notice was induced, together with his fellow-religionists, to select some portion of the new world as their place of refuge. About the year 1695, Hans Graff had fled from his native home in Switzerland, and taken up his abode in Alsace, a district of France, where he remained until he emigrated to America, and settled at Germantown, Pa. His stay in this latter place was of some duration ; but finally, induced by glowing descriptions of the fertility and excellence of the soil of the Pequea valley, he removed thither and chose it as his abode, unless one more adapted to his tastes should come to his knowledge. In his wanderings through the new territory he came into a finely timbered district of country; and embowered in the midst of beautiful and majestic oaks, he saw a gushing stream of limpid water issuing from its fountain in all its native purity. Fascinated with this delightful elysium of nature, this exiled wanderer for conscience resolved to select the lovely spot upon which his eyes then for the first time rested, and the place where, in coming years, he and his successors might pour out their adorations to the God of their fathers, with none to fear nor make them afraid. His resolution was fixed. Returning to his home at Pequea, he disposed of his effects and immediately took up his journey for the place which he had chosen as his future home and abode. . Here he erected a cabin under a large white oak tree, in which he, the partner of his bosom and an only child, spent the first winter. In the following spring, in order to secure himself in this the territory of his choice, he took out a warrant for a large tract of land, and then built for himself a house of more commodious dimensions and near to the site of his first rude and homely cabin. Fortune favored, in a remarkable degree, this early pioneer of Lancaster's wilds; and it was not long till his prosperity attracted others of his countrymen, who came and settled around and near him; and in this manner the nucleus of a flourishing settlement was in a short time formed. For many years, however, the principal persons with whom Hans Graff had intercourse, were the red^men of the forest, and this accounts for his great knowledge of the Indian tongue, in which he is said to have discoursed as fluently as in his vernacular German. He was not slow in taking advantage of the circumstances by which he was surrounded, and with the Indians he soon established a trade that resulted to his great profit and advantage. He sold to the Indians milk, vegetables, blankets, and other articles of merchandise which he could purchase in Philadelphia, and obtained in exchange for them furs and other objects of trade, for which he could secure a ready sale, and which, to him, were equivalent to cash. In this way Hans Graff laid the foundation of a princely fortune; and by the time that Lancaster was organized into a separate county, he was already one of the most independent and influential of its citizens. The township in which he had selected his abode, was named Earl (Graff) in honor of him, as its most respected inhabitant. He was an active and energetic man in his day; useful as a counsellor amongst his neighbors and fellow-citizens; and no business of importance was transacted at that early period unless his judgment was first consulted and his consent obtained. Despite the jealousy of race, that in those early times inflamed the antagonistic Irish and German elements of the county, we find the name of Hans Graff often conspicuously appearing in positions of official trust, to which he had been assigned by the Governor and Board of Council of the province; and by the judges of the court of his county. After having served his day and generation, he was followed to his last resting-place by his numerous friends and descendants, who have erected a shrine to his memory more enduring than the lofty marble monuments reared to princes, kings and emperors.

Hans Graff raised six sons: Peter, David, John, Daniel, Marcus and Samuel. David was married to a Miss Moyer, and died at the age of sixty-two years. His wife attained the age of ninety-two years. David, son of the last named, married Barbara Hirst, and built the house in West Earl township where Levi W. Groff now resides. He died at the age of twenty-seven, and his widow married David Martin. John, (gross Johnny), son of the last, was married to a Miss Wenger. Levi W. Groff is one of his sous, and David G. Swartz, esq., of Lancaster, is a grandson.

Carol,

Parker Graff was a first cousin of my grandmother, and I've also traced this line back to Samuel and Susanna Graff and to David Ladner, son-in-law of Hugh Thorn. I have information on Hugh Thorn's ancestry, also. My email addresses are LouanneRuth@verizon.net and barre37@attglobal.net. You can contact me directly.

I show Parker's line as going through Charles Frank Graff, son of Abraham H. Graff, son of Jacob and Mary Graff, son of Samuel and Susanne (Graff) Graff. In 1971, I had an interview with Clarissa (Fancher) Graff Hill, widow of Parker's brother, and she was a great help.

Louanne Barrett

I live in Santa Clara. Do you have any relatives here? We put the book together 10 or more years ago and it starts with the two cousins who came - one in 1861 and one in 1863 - all Graf-f's from this area originate from these two. Johannes came in 1863 and that is Emil's father I believe the Emil you are talking about. if he married Charlotte Juliet Roulet. We just put together a binder with what we collected, but the pictures, etc are just zeroxed and not very good quality. I think I got this lines info from Jane Comp - does that sound familiar? Is your contact in Switzerland from Rebstein? We have contact with a Werner Graf that has given us a lot of info. We visited him a few years back and it was awesome. Would love to go again.

Found your mother's parents in the book, but that's as far down as we came. There's a Swiss Genealogy website you might can google Werner has put all his info on it and it goes way back. If you have the New Family Search hopefully it is on that as we have been doing a lot of the work to get it on the computer.

My uncle Fred has had some contact with the family still in Switzerland.
I'm sure there are other relatives in Utah (I live in California) who would have more information for your Graff book. I have one uncle and aunt and a number of cousins in Utah. I have no connection with the LDS church myself.

Looking for info on John Graff who arrived in 1848. John arrived with his brother (name unknown). He also had three sisters, two came to US. He was a cooper by trade in Germany. He worked as a cook on a boat on the Mississippi before settling in Troy Center, WI which is near East Troy, and about 35 miles from Milwaukee, WI. He married Augusta Brandt. John Graff was born Jan 26, 1818 in Mecklenburg and died Nov 6, 1891.

I only have a trial membership to Ancestry. Please reply to mark@aerialcompany.com in the future.

Thanks
DD

Re: GRAF (GRAFF) FROM GERMANY, INDIANA,ILLINOIS

Regarding the Scheurer of Illinois:
My wife's GG Grandfather was Phillip Scheurer of Brighton Township in Macoupin County Illinois. Phillip was originally from Nassau Germay (the Rhineland-Palatinate) and came to the US in late 1857.

The reason for writing you was because you mention a relative named Anna Marie Scheurer marrying and living in Bond County Illinois. Bond County is adjacent to Macoupin Co. Phillip Scheurer had a daughter named Anna (b. August 1871), but she married a Thomas Delahanty. Philip and his wife also had a daughter named Mary (b.1974). Often times Maria/Marie was shortended to Mary.

Not sure this is any help, but thought I'd mention it. If there is a connection, could you let us know?

Mike & Becky Meredith
mbnn@msn.com

John,

I believe that I am also a decendant of Jacob Graff via his son Charles Graff. My grandmother's (on my mother's side) maiden name was Edith Helen Lintz and she was born in Philadelphia in 1916. I'm trying to complete a family tree. Can you help?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

-Matt
