Sorry for butting in on this family tree but I am also directly decended from Noah Grainger and Mary Ann Southern.
In fact I have a copy of their Marriage certificate.
Noah and Mary Ann hand a son also Noah how married Mary Simms (I have their marriage certificate also.
The whole of the Grainger clan including many of the in-laws moved from Dudley Worcestershire up to Spennymoor Co Durham in the mid 1870's.
The main seasons for this,if you can look back at early Victorian history of the Dudley area was most probobally due to the massive poverty and lack of sanitation in the whole of what is known as the Black Country. Dudley in the mid 1840's was considered to be the worst area in England to live, also there were many cholera outbreaks in this area, and infant deaths were very common(check out Dudley and South Shaffordshire at
books.google and click on pubic domain) This information is free to view.
My conclusion therefore is that the families moved up north for better pay and living conditions for the survival of future generations.
Hope this is helpful

HI Jenny,

I've just discovered that you have Jane Weir, married to John Burridge, in your family tree. We are trying to establish whether Jane is a sister of Robert, Thomas Bell, Elizabeth and Sarah Bell Weir all from Aghadowey, County Derry, Nth Ireland.
The parents, Joseph and Eliza Bell fit although our dates differ slightly.
Do you know anything more about them?
Cheers Sally

Lavinia Sheldon (nee Grainger or Granger), Staffordshire

Hello,

I'm researching Lavinia Granger / Grainger, who married Charles Edward Sheldon snr. in Cannock, Staffordshire; I'm trying to determine the names of Lavinia's parents.

Lavinia - whose name was spelled "Levania Grainger" on her 1874 marriage record, according to FamilySearch.org - was born c.1850 in Norton, Staffordshire, according to the 1881 Census.

In the 1871 Census, a "Levinia Grainger", born c.1848, Norton, is listed as a servant in the home of Carew Elwell, of The Forge, Elwells Lane, Wednesbury.

However, in the 1891 Census, Lavinia's date and place of birth are given as c.1849 in Bilston.

Lavinia Sheldon nee Granger died c.1906, Walsall, Staffordshire, according to FreeBMD.org.uk (Volume 6B, page 419).

I have not been able to find any Lavinia Granger's born c.1850 in Norton; however, there was a Lavinia Granger born c.1849, Willenhall, to William Granger and Harriet Ordidge, according to FamilySearch.org.

Also according to FamilySearch.org, Lavinia had a brother, William jnr., born c.1853 in Norton, which might be why Lavinia later gave Norton as her place of birth.

FreeBMD.org.uk also has an 1849 birth record for a "Levena Grainger" in Wolverhampton (Volume XVII, Page 396) that might be the woman I'm looking for.

Can anyone assist me in determining Lavinia's parentage?

Thank you for your time,
Craig Sheldon

I have a photo taken circa late 1800's with the note Albert & Annie Grainger. Expect they lived in the Devon area of England. 3 children in portrait. Annie may have been a Pearce or Spargo that ties in with the family of George John Stewart.

This is a real longshot, but if anyone recognizes this couple, I'd be very interested in hearing from you.

Debbi

I have Mary Grainger Potts in my family line and I believe that her parents were Thomas Grainger and Margaret Lilley, but I have yet to find proof. Mary Potts married Joseph W.
Iam not sure who the "Global Graingers" are. They match alot of my profile members, however I don't pay to use the site. If you pay to use the site, I believe they are a public member which means their information would be viewible to the public.
I personally don't know of any Cornelius, but I havn't gotten that far back either.
My Graingers include a couple Benjamins, a couple George's, and Eliza Green, a Mildred Monca, and a Sarah. Don't know who the parents are and that is was I am trying to find. The are all from Dudley and I unfortunatly have not found a free way to access records. I know this really doesn't help, but when you find more information, please keep me in touch.
Looking for information on Irishman Thomas Grainger who died in Valparaiso Chile on 12 May 1861. His is son of John Grainger and Mary Long from Co. Cork Ireland, born 10 Nov 1804.

His brother John was a convict sentenced to life in Australia in 1822. Thomas was unmarried and no children. He left a sum of money to his mother in Ireland.

I think Thomas was on his way back to Ireland from Australia when he died in Chile. I am not sure. We have also heard through family rumours he may have been a mercenary.

Looking for any records, shipping, death records and also where he might be buried. There has been a suggestion foreigners were buried in Cerro Panteon Cemetary in Valparaiso.....?

Any help appreciated.
Regards,
Marina.

I bought the house that belonged to Lillian Grainger Cunningham. Attic was full of pictures, letters, antique clothes, etc. She was youngest of family. I know of Lidstone because I was born in Houston and Lidstone's owned a hotel there that Lillian lived in for a while. Our house is in Palestine, Texas and so is house of Charles J. Grainger Jr. Attached is a picture of Lillian's house we have been restoring for 7 years. Do you have any pictures of our house ? Lillian is buried here along with A. R. Howard and some others in the family plot. Who else is in Glenwood ??? I know about Sue Dee the sister who married Brown. I have picture of him. Other pics I don't know who they are other than a small one of Charles, Jr. when he was a child. Georgianna is buried here. I have a list that I will dig out. Sue Dee Heaton was the daughter of Lillian. She is buried in Salmon, Tex down the road from Palestine.
Durr is who Lillian bought the house from.
Barb

No, don't remember anybody other than the lady to the left of our place past one vacant lot. She raised chickens and her husband had died and she let us play her piano. Do you remember...how old are you anyway ? I am 62. Hansen's grocery a few blocks away and Rettig Ice Cream !! My step-grandparents also owned a rent house on Calhoun behind Sacred Heart that Sacred Heart bought and made part of their parking lot. LOL !! How time flies. Did your family own 1819 Brazos. It was a gorgeous house as I remember so many years ago. True gingerbread.
WOW! Yes absolutely Sue Dee Brown. Sudie Grainger was late born older sister of Lillie Lee. See Houston Census.
They were boarders at Sacred Heart Church in 1880, I think.
Barb

Yes, I know the name Lidstone. I was born in Houston and lived there until I was about 30. Lidstone Hotel. My family is still in Houston. I am older now but remember so much from the Houston of the 1946-1970 era before it became a huge city that I can't even stand to drive in anymore.
I attended Fannin Elementary as a child. My first school.
We lived in a giant old house developed into apts. and our address was 1819 Brazos.

The Lidstones gave Lillian Grainger and her husband a bible when they were married in Ennis, Ellis County Tex. I have a picture of Charles Jr. as a child and other pictures that I can't identify. I have letters found in the attic of this house dating back to 1873. The 1870 census (I think)
has Eliza, Charles Jr. Lillian, Georgiana, Sudie...all of them. I have been researching the family since we bought this house in 2000.

My email is barbinpalestine@hotmail.com. I don't know if we are related but we share an interest in the Grainger thru Houston and this house. I will be happy to share my info with you. I suspect Charles Grainger and Charles Jr.
may also be buried at Glenwood. I know that Georgiana is buried in Palestine and several other Grainger in the plot at our cemetary. I have visited Lillian's grave many times.
Barb

No, not related but I bought the house Lillian Grainger bought about 1927 in Palestine Tx. She was married to J. W. Cunningham and Georgiana Grainger is buried here in Palestine. Her sister was Sudie (Sue Dee)(Brown Shoe Company) and Lillian named her adopted daughter Sue Dee. I think we have the same people. Lillian died in 1951 in Palestine and is buried in the local cemetary.
Barb

Sorry, I posted that message 6 years ago and was totally caught off guard. You mean the architect Charles Grainger ?
Let's just confirm. Who was your mom ? or grandmom? I know much about Lillian Lee Grainger. She lived in the house I own now. She died in 1951 and Charles was her father and fought at Goliad ? Are we on the same page ?
Barb

The Charles I am interested in, was married to Elizabeth Capron. They had a home on the cornor of Texas and Fannin here in Houston. They had 5 daughters. One of them was Eliza Jane, who married Louis Frederick Delesdernier who had Janis Lucille, who married George Murray and they had my grandmother, Mozelle. Are we cousins or not?
Regards,
Curt

Well, I find you twice....My Great Great Grandfather is John Owen Lennon. He and Mildred Monca Grainger married in England. They had one or all three daughters in England...Many variations of names. Isabella aka Mary aka Ella is my Great Grandmother. My Great grandmother didn't talk much about her family. She seemed to know more about my Great Grandfathers side of the family which would be Robert Robinson whom is also from England, but met in the US. They married and had children in Detroit Michigan. I understand my Great Grandfathers family were bootleggers.
Now back to the Lennons. My Great Great Grandfather John Owen Lennon and Mildred Grainger or Granger had three daughters. Marimusal aka Mary, Mona, and my Great Grandma. Her birth certificate, passport and marriage cert all say different first names but she is the same person. I would love to talk more and learn more about the other side my grandma didn't know much about. I know we have a match...

Yes I noticed that the "Global Graingers Public Tree" had alot of matching information to mine. I was looking for the owner of that tree. Whether it is you or not, I was hoping for help, information, and connections.

My Great Grandmother Mary (Ella in the U.S.) Isabella Lennon was daughter of Mildred Monca Grainger (July 1 1887 Spennymore England) and John Owen Lennon (1884 Thornley England). Mildred Monca Grainger I know had a sister named Sarah, and a brother named Benny (Benjamin) and George. I believe there could have been more siblings. My grandma gave me this information but has no birthdays.
According to some Ellis Island records, and others helping, I was able to read that a last known relative was a Mary, a mother of Mildred Monca Grainger. Sarah was born abt 1889 also in England and died in Illinois,USA. Mildred died in East Michigan,USA between the years of 1942-1947.
Anyway, I think Mildred and Sarah dad was George Grainger born about 1860, but I'm not positive. There was a census in England that showed the approx names and children with similar birthdays.
If George 1860 is Mildred and Sarahs father, then I believe his sibling may have been a Benjamin also, maybe more children. I think their father was also a George Grainger 1832, married to an Eliza Green. This George Grainger has a census showing parents are Noah Grainger and Mary Ann Southern. I can't print out the census because I don't pay to be able to. But I think my records are pretty accurate. I'll try to draw it out better because this was pretty wordy!

Noah Grainger
Mary Ann Southern
i.George Grainger 1832
married Elisa Green 1831
ii.George Grainger 1860
married Mary
iii.George Grainger
iii.Mildred Monca Grainger 1887
married John Owen Lennon
iiii.Mary Isabella Lennon
iiii.Mona Monica Lennon
iiii.Marimusal(Mildred) Mary Lennon
iii.Sarah E. Grainger 1889
married Purvis
iiii.Florence Purvis
Sarah also married Peter Banoff
iiii.Dorene Banoff
iiii.Gladys Banoff
iii.Benjamin (Benny) Grainger
ii.Noah Grainger 1865
ii.Benjamin Grainger 1869

As you can see I am totally amituer at doing genealogy, but I really enjoy the puzzle of people I'm trying to put together. My Grandmas side of the family was not close so getting this far has been amazing. To get any furthur back would be absolutely amazing. Let me know if this answers any of your questions or gives you more food for thought!

I would like to find out some information about my ancestry, but have very little information to go on.
My grandfathers name was Arthur Grainger, that is all I know of him. His son, my father, was Sidney Harold Grainger and he married Selma Paulina Kay (Katajistus) in Melbourne. They had three children Ronald Arthur, Gary John and Ian Rodney (that's me). I do not know my fathers date of birth as he and my mother divorced when I was about two years old, I am now fifty five. My father died about ten years ago.
If anyone can help with information about my family I or how to get started on researching it, I would be grateful.
Regards - Ian Grainger

Mr. Curry:

Thank you so much for the information. I located the P.O.W. records for Andrew Curry on this site and was shocked to learn that he was sent to Camp Douglas, here in Chicago, in August 1863.

Still confused about whether or not Hugh fought with Morgan in 1863. His son Lee believed he did, and Hugh named his first son born after the war, in 1865, Hugh Morgan Curry.

I have the photos of the other Currys you mention. Have never seen a picture of John W. Curry's foundry. My great-aunt told me that Dennis Long cheated John out of his foundry somehow, and that there was bad blood between them.

I have a very old title abstract (c. 1885) for a property on South 8th Street between Main & Market that was among Lee's papers. In pencil on the front of it is written "Got from Long." Have no idea its significance.

I would love to contact Mr. Gerlach and the others you mention. Thanks for the offer to put me in touch.

I began researching my family history when I was seventeen years old. I'm now 44 and amazed at how quickly I can gather data and do research. It used to require long hours in libraries and historical societies to unearth a fragment here and there.

Thanks again for the info.

Best,
Steven L.
Mr. Curry:

I am from Louisville but live in Chicago. A couple of years ago I purchased a copy of the Curry Notes you deposited at the Filson Club. They have been extremely helpful in my own researches. Thank you.

What confuses me about Hugh Curry's Civil War record is whether he served under John Morgan and Basil Duke before or after he was a prisoner of war. According to my info he enlisted in 1861 (C Company, 5 KY Mounted Infantry)and was captured the same year in Bullitt County, sent to Camp Chase, then Johnson Island, then Vicksburg in 1862 for exchange. But my grt-aunt insisted that he participated in Morgan's Raid which was in 1863. Did he re-enlist?

She also told me that he was arrested with George Prentice's son Clarence and both were charged with espionage. Prentice wrote Lincoln begging him to pardon his son and Lincoln did so. This really did happen to Clarence Prentice (I believe in 1862) but I don't know if Hugh was involved.

I double-checked the story about hiding from the feds, and the version I heard (again from my grt-aunt) was that Hugh hid under Docia's bed while his compatriot hid in the chimney. The feds left but both men were apprehended later. Did one of Hugh's brothers serve in the war? If so, do you know which one?

I think we have the same photographs of John W. Curry, Theodocia, and Mary Ann. I also have several pictures of Hugh's brother Andrew. I was very pleased to discover the new stone for John W. & Theodocia Curry at Cave Hill a few years ago. I wondered where it came from.

Thank you for your efforts to honor and remember our family.

Best,
SLJones

We have a Margaret Grainger living with the John H. Whitworth family in the 1850 census for Henry County TN. We believe she may be the mother of John H.'s wife. We have been trying to find out the names of John H.'s parents and the names of his wife's parents. John H is sometimes listed in other census years as Harmon, JH, and or just John.

Hello, I am doing research on the Grainger family also. My My great great grandmother was Cady Grainger (May 24,1825 to aprx 1900)who married Alfred Graham. Caty's dad was Goldsberry Benjamin Grainger (dob 1-15-1797 dod 1865) and her mom was Sarah Gerrald. Goldsberry father was John Grainger (1760-1826) and mother was Charity Buffkin.John's father was Caleb Grainger (1725 -?) mother was Mary Ann Watters also born in 1725. Caleb 's father was Joshua Grainger (1702-1745 apprx) and mother was Elizabeth Toomer. FYI Caleb and his son John served in the first NC Senate when NC pulled away from England with the rest of America at that time. I am trying to find Joshua's ancestors and where they are from.
