Is James G. Grammer really the son of Joseph Grammer?

My goal is to confirm the father of James. I've collected documents, but feel that I don't have enough data to make a confident connection. This is why I've turned to doing the surname DNA testing.

To confirm that James is indeed the son of Joseph, we would need another Grammer male descendant to do the surname DNA test.

There are many companies out there that do the surname test, and I'm wondering if any other Grammer male descendants has done a surname test. I would like to compare results with any other Grammer surname test results. Please email me at theresagrammer@cox.net

In case anyone has been thinking about doing a y-dna test to confirm your surname line but is worried about the test revealing health implications, I want to let you know that this is not the case. That information is found if you ran the full mt-dna sequence. The y-dna surname test doesn't provide information about health issues.

Background on the James G. Grammer line:

James G. Grammer, born 1800-1810 in TN and died after 1880, married Elizabeth Grizzle on 11/17/1834 in Tuscaloosa, AL. They had the following children:

John E. Grammer, abt 1836 - unknown death
Joseph W. Grammer, abt 1837 - died sometime after 1880
Curtis C. Grammer, 04/23/1838 - 04/12/1914
Charles McCloude Grammer, 09/18/1840 - 12/19/1897
Benjamin Franklin Grammer, 08/25/1842 - 05/19/1908
Lucinda Caroline Grammer, abt 1845 - unknown death

My connection to him is through his son, Charles.

Hi:
I have heard through my family that we are related to a John Grammer of Blandford Church in Petersburg, VA. I have a family tree that starts with William Grammer who married Cora Lee Clarke. These would be my great grandparents. My grandfather was Wilson Grammer born in 1913. From what I was told William & Cora Lee moved to Baltimore, MD.
Do you have anything on a Grammer family that left Petersburg for Baltimore. I would like to trace my family back further than William & Cora Lee. If you have any information please let me know.

Cheryl (Grammer) Fiorini

I am looking for info on Eberhard GRAMMER. He was born in Bildechingen, Wuerttemberg Germany March 1839. He came to the US and was found in the 1870 census of Bureau County, Illinois. In 1880 he was in Wyanet, Bureau County, Illinois. That is the last I can find of him. No death in Bureau county. Can anyone help? Thanks, Sheila Smith

Hi Sheila, It looks like Bildechingen is very close to Ergenzingen Germany. There are many Grammer's going back to Johannes Grammer, *1724 in Ergenzingen.

Does your line also go back to Johannes?

I was curious because a male Grammer from Germany did the dna test. Do you know if any male descendants from your Grammer line have done a dna test?

If so we could compare it with the two dna tests already done and see if you're from the same line and determine how closely related.

The two GRAMMER dna tests are from different lines.

Has anyone else done the dna testng, maybe with a different company?

We have two Grammers that have tested. From the dna results, they are from different lines. One is for Germany. The other is thought to be a descendant of Joseph Grammer, also of Germany.

I'm hoping to compare results with other tests.

New DNA Project Participant - His test results are back

A second Grammer joined the DNA project, a Grammer gentleman in the southwest German state of Baden-Württemberg. He has very good records on his family tree going back to the early 1700's. The family was in the Baden-Württemberg area in early 1700. Since he lives reasonably close to the Haguenau, France area (~80 kilometers / ~50 miles), we thought odds were good for a dna match.

We compared it to my dad's test (he is thought to be the descendant of Joseph Grammer 1750).

We were thinking it would be a match, but it was not. In fact, they are in entirely different haplogroups.

There is a third Grammer that did the dna test and he does match 12 for 12 with my dad's test. I pretty sure his ancestor was from Alabama.

******
On a side note: For those of you from the James G. Grammer line, the Grizzle family did a maternal DNA test to see if Abigail was Cherokee or some other Native American origin. I got an email that the maternal DNA was not Native American. This is relevant to the Grammer family because James G. Grammer married Elizabeth Grizzle.

Happy Researching...Theresa

Your John Grammer was the son of John Grammer and Elizabeth
Abernathy. He married Sarah (Sallie) Noblett. There are other descendants in Texas who are researching that line. I
do have info from his will, signed in 1858 in Lincoln County,
TN and some info from the settlement of the estate when Sarah died. The settlement is dated 1871. John and Elizabeth were
married in Dinwiddie County VA in 1792. My line is their son,
Peterson, born 1797.

Hi, I have owned the John Grammer House in Petersburg Va. for the past 15 years and have extensively researched his family's genealogy hoping to find his true descendants. So far I keep running into lines that have died out or are not his direct descendants. I would love to share all the info that has been turned up-as it is quite interesting and also solves many of the questions that are posted. I hope to hear from someone, mostly to find his true descendants.

Hi, the only Elizabeth Grammer that is directly related to John Grammer 1754-1835 is his daughter that was born to his first wife ----- Timberlake. It has been stated many times that Elizabeth Grammer was born in 1786..in fact she was born in 1785. I have been to her grave and it states that she was born 1785 and died 1861. The grave yard is on the former land of "Locust Grove Plantation" located near McKinney in Dinwiddie Co., Va. Elizabeth Grammer married Thomas Withers, who in fact was the brother of the second Mrs. John Grammer, (Priscilla Withers Grammer). There were at least 3 John Grammers living in the same period in the Petersburg area. To say the least, your Elizabeth is a relative on John Grammer. I've seen on line about the Abernathy-Grammer connections, which could be your line. If I turn up any info, will pass it on to you.

take care

Thank you so very, very much. I thought that the graves from Locust Grove Plantation, which was the plantation owned by Virgil and Bettie Davis Rives, were all moved to Butterwood Methodist Church Cemetary when the government decided to create a military base in Blackstone. I have quite a few members of the Davis family at Butterwood, whom were originally in that graveyard. Does that cemetary still exist on the base?

Thanks again for your assistance!

That is so wonderful to be able to own a piece of history like that! I am trying to find more information on the Elizabeth Grammer, whom was born about 1795 and died 15 May 1854 in Petersburg. She married William Joseph Davis. They had Wilkins J (my 4th GGrandfather), James William (owner of the boarding school in Dinwiddie), Elizabeth B, and Heartwell T. Davis. Thanks to the burning of the Dinwiddie County Courthouse, I have had considerable trouble tracking this family. Any assistance or direction to a path would be most appreciated!
