Well, it's a pleasure to meet you! We are really looking forward to Becky's book! The History Channel had a special on the Civil War last week that featured the General-I plan to get a copy of the program and give it to my brother who bears a stricking resemblence to Hiram. I hope we get to meet sometime! all the best, Helen O'Keefe

Hi Linda, I am Hiram's second cousin three times removed. My maiden name is Helen Marie Granberry and I was born in Jackson Miss. in 1957. I am the great, great granddaughter of Jessie Dykes Granberry who was Hiram's cousin and grew up on a neighboring plantation. I'd suggest you visit the web site for Southern Cedars Gallery, which was Jessie Dykes Granberry's plantation home near Raymond Mississippi. The owners, Jerry, who is an accomplished painter, and his wife Kay have amassed a great deal of information on our family and were of great help to me and my brother, Henry Dennis Granberry III. with kindest regards, Helen "Cissy" O'Keefe
I may be reached at Irisheyes@cableone.net.

Gen Hiram Granberry (as born) Granbury (as killed) buried as Granberry, City of Granbury changed tombstones and renamed him Granbury a few years ago.
His wife Fannie took sick at Ft Donelson while awaiting his release, after being captured. Her health failed and she had to return to the South to Mobile, Ala best I can find out she died there shortly after Gen Granberrys release and going to be at her side. She most likely is buried there.
Hope this helps Carl

Thank you, Thank you, Thankyou.
I lost track of him after 1864 and found a maybe matching family in 1870 Denton Co. TX. In this index there is a listing for Elizabeth, age 55
Norvel, age 27
Will, age 33

Later I find a James, age 35 in the 1880 Denton Co. TX index.

There are two Hiram Granberry/Granburys. One man was born 1815 GA the other b1831 MS. They are uncle and nephew. The older Hiram is the brother of Rev. Norvell R. Granberry and the younger is the son of Rev. Norvell R. Granberry.
Hiram b 1815 GA married Elizabeth Joyce
Hiram b 1831 MS married Fanne Sims

I have contacted Granbury, TX about the original headstone and have been told there was an indepth search concerning this Hiram and the original headstone is in error. Also CW data shows only one Hiram enlisted. Due to the age of the older Hiram it is not likely he was involved. Also CW records state Hiram enlisted at the age of 30 in the year 1861. There is also a conflict about Gen. H.B. Granbury serving time at Johnson Island. I believe this was based on earlier data, from the early 1900's, assuming all men captured at Fort Donelson were sent to Johnson Island. This is not true, according to prison records Gen. H.B.Granbury was given permission to visit his wife in Baltimore, MD after her surgery and he signed a fellow prisoner's autograph book. If you do a search for " Fort Warren" you will find this data. This is a prison in Boston Harbor.

This is where the trouble starts. The Hiram I referred to was Brig. Gen. Hiram Granberry/Granbury born 1831 in MS. He married Fannie Sims 31 March 1858, McLennan Co. TX. He was the son of Rev. Norvell R. Granberry and Nancy McLaurin. The Hiram who married Elizabeth Joyce was born in 1815 GA the brother to Rev. Norvell R. Granberry. I have been searching Tarrant Co. TX and have lost this family after 1863, then another family which might be the wife Elizabeth and two sons, Norvel and Will, show up in Denton Co. TX 1870 and then I find a James in 1880 Denton Co. TX. How I would love to find where Hiram and Elizabeth Granberry are buried. Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Can you state in what state and county and the name of the cemetery in which you found the original headstone of Gen. H. B. Granbury? Also what year was this taken? This was posted through Ancestry.com and findagrave.com I believe. I know the new headstone is located in Granbury Cemetery in Granbury, TX.
