Grandison and Gray Families in Dundee, Scotland, about 1840 to 1860

I am looking for information linking these two families

David Gray, b 1846 in Dundee, was my Gt. Gt. Grandfather; I have traced the family back to the 1871 Census. The likely person on the 1861 Census shows David as a boarder with Ann Grandeson but on the 1851 Census she is shown as his mother and the name is written as Grandison. Not being able to see actual Census pages on line is a real hindrance.

I would appreciate any information on either family and any possible connection
Thanks Janet. From what i know that Grandison's came to scotland from Norway, they were three bothers, walter, robert and john. What happened after that is a mystery. My grandfather was one of 11 children of which he was the only boy. His full names is Walter John Sheills Grandison, he married a Margret Wilson and they had 2 children, margret and walter (my father). I'm not sure if this will help you with your search, but is you come across any, please let me know.

Grandison

Tony: thank you for getting back to me..I asked about the names of your family for a specific reason and this may help you in your search for family..in Scotland up until my generation, children were named according to the following practice: 1st son named after father's father; 1st daugther named after mother's mother; second son called after mother's father and second daughter named after father's mother...this way the same names keep showing up generation after generation...unfortunately none of the names of your father's siblings show up in any of the family I have so far discovered....My grandfather was born in MidCalder near Edinburgh 1891, his name was Dewar Grandison, his siblings Isabella, William, Alice and Robina..His parents, Thomas Grandison and Robina Yates, grandparents James Grandison and Alice Byrde..I have not yet investigated the siblings of Thomas...James and Alice lived in Bo'ness, East Lothian Scotland, he was a seaman. Before starting out on this journey of discovery I had never met anyone who's name was Grandison, either in Scotland or here in Canada, so naturally I thought there were very few of us around, and we must all be related, how wrong I was. I wish I could help you more...I have had a lot of success with Scots Origins, you have to pay for the information but it comes from the Registrar's office in Edinburgh...if you have the name of an ancestor born before 1900 in Scotland and if you have an idea of the location you may be able to track him down....good luck.....Janet(Grandison)Beech
