Hi Adrian

I know you put this post on quite a while ago, just wondered if your still needing any help. My maiden name is Grange and am related to Margaret Batty Boyd and Richard Grange. My Granparents of the Granges are Richard whitley Grange, Smith Grange, Richard Sharp Grange.

I am also a bit stuck on richard sharpe and elizabeth Grange born around 1800. For some reason I had an ancestry tree stating they were born in Normandie in France. If you have any info on this I would be really grateful. I have loads of Granges in my tree and have found a few of the Batty's war memorials when they died in the first world war. If yo are still interested I can invite you to my tree as it looks like we may even be related

Kind Regards
Nicki

Hi Bob,

Sorry if I caused some confusion. The reply I originally sent was to redgrange. His father and my grandmother were first cousins. From the messages where he referred to Agnes as his sister I knew it was either him or his brother.
The John Grange I am referring to was born in 1858. He is my great grandfather. My grandmother, Annie was the 2nd daughter of his first marriage to Annie Marshall.
Hope this helps to lessen any confusion. It happends easily since the names repeat each generation in the traditional fashion.

Ireland 1826), James's father was Hugh (b. Ireland 1805). If you fit into any of this line let me know - I was in Templepactrick, N. I'm Anne Grange Ferron's grandaughter, also
Bart and Jane's daughter.
I just saw your posting from May of last year regarding Robert's Grange's book. It is called the Granges of Northern Ireland.
The website is manned by the husband of Betty Grange Wilson, she is the great granddaughter of James Grange and
Jane Marshall.

Susan
Milwaukee to Nebraska Granges

There are several older messages scattered around this board about the Hoadley-Grange clan that began in Milwaukee with Richardson Grange, Sr. (b. 1817 in Yorkshire, England) and his wife Elizabeth Hoadley.

John Scafe and Richardson H. were two of their sons.

John Scafe (sometimes called John Hoadley Grange) m. Gertrude Smith raised several children around Valentine, Nebraska, including my grandmother, Catherine Ruth Grange. My mom is the next-youngest of her 8 surviving children.

Sorry if this post seems redundant throughout a few threads on this board, but I would like very much to find other researchers who can help fill me in on this part of my family!

Janelle

Sorry if it's slow (it's a personal site, yet has 78,000 people on the site). This is the specific page of the granges:

http://www.colinandbethany.com/familyhistory/indilist.php?al...

That's all one line with no spaces.

Thanks

I ran into that very same info Bob, frustrating huh? I'm not sure how great any of the census takers were in the 1st place. So here we are, back to the original dilemma, I still haven't figured out if we are really connected to him or not. I'm starting to think my husband's grandmother was just name dropping to try and impress me. Her mother-in-law May Grange was reportedly from Wisconsin b.abt 1890 according to the Census. And I can't seem to make the leap to any of Red's relatives that I've found so far. Any better luck?

The auto bio was a "as told to" an author. Ira Morton was that author. The quote you have is from the first page, 2nd paragraph.

Red's father did not help genology searching - 1930 census in LA lists him, with Harold E., as Grange, Lyle M. The 1920 census in Weaton, IL lists him, with Harold E. and Gaeland, as Grange, John N. L. His ages were listed as 60 and 50, respectively, but the 1870 census of Sullivan Cnty, PA (site of Forksville) list a John N. as a 2 year old - he should not have been listed or listed as less than 1 years old. Are they all the same person? Who knows for sure.

My information did come from his biography, but it was "as told to" to another man... can't put my finger on it right now. He was also getting to be advanced in years by the time of the interview, his memory may have been clouded or the writer may have misinterpreted...? Human error is always the biggest stumbling block in this kind of research, at least, that has been my experience... At best, quite a bit of it is based on educated guesses. That's part of the whole process, right?

Feb. 13, 1876. Doesn't have her maiden name. marvtrucks@home.com

I am puzzling over whether his 3 Davis stepsons noted in the 1900 census for Lisbon, Ransom county, North Dakota, might include J. Albert Davis who was born abt 1878 in New York. Says x? Frank? Grange's father was born in New York, his mother in Ohio and that he had been married for 9 years.
Is anybody researching Grange who has a stepson named J. Albert Davis?

I guess my last reply never made it. James & Anges arrived the US in April 1851 on the Annadale. They had one son born aboard ship. They settled in Dearborn County, IN. Their oldest son John was my Grandmother's Grandfather. I have alot of detail from 1851 on if you are interested. Please contact me direct at shillato@cwnet.com.

I will be visiting Belfast this June to try to find actual docs. James and Agnes were married in the non-subscribing Presbyterian in Templepatrick (I have the marrage record)and there are other good records in the PRONI.

Bob Shillato

I hope you're still on this forum after all these years, cousin.

My grandmother, Catherine Ruth Grange (Klatt) was born in Valentine, Nebraska in 1900 to John Scafe Grange (1855-1944)and Gertrude Smith (1865-1952). She died in 1993 in California. My mom was the next-to-youngest of her 8 surviving children.

John S. is the son of Richardson Grange, b. 1817 in Yorkshire, England. I don't know when he came to the states, but he married Elizabeth Hoadly (1823-1914)in Milwaukee in December 1845. His long obituary (1902) describes him as an early and important Milwaukee pioneer.

Richardson Grange is the son of Joseph Grange and Elizabeth (according to my grandmother) or Margaret (on other trees I've seen) of Yorkshire. I've never pursued this line.

Elizabeth Hoadley is the daughter of William Hoadley and a woman named Hopwood, also of Yorkshire. I haven't researched this, either.

Gertrude Smith Grange is the daughter of William Smith and Mary Gordon... names almost impossible to research...

-Janelle

Harold "Red" Grange was a famous football hero in the 20s and 30s. His line goes back to Yorkshire, England - it can be fully documented via US census records from 1850 to 1930. My line, via my grandmother, is from N. Ireland.

The question is - is there a common root for these lines?

I agree that a son would know his father's nationality or descent. I find this odd that Red's autobiography would say this. Yes, all of my information is carefully sourced. I have gotten a lot of it from people who are much closer to Red's line than I am. The only explanation I can think of is that Red is refering to his father's mother's heritage (Eliza Vough) - actually I don't know where the Voughs came from.
Beats me!

I don't know why it is written in Red's autobiography that his father was of scotch-irish extraction. It is quite well established that Red was the son of John Nelson Lyle Grange (1868-1954) and Sarah "Sadie" Sherman (1876-1908/10). J.N.L., known as "Lyle", Grange was the son of John Wesley Grange (1823-1896) and Eliza Vough (1834-1910). Maybe Eliza was from a scotch-irish family, but John Wesley Grange's father was John Grange "Jr" who was born in Yorkshire, England in 1779, as was his father before him.
These Granges were definitely from Yorkshire, not Ireland.

Margaret and my sister Agnes were life time friends.

I have a book, The Granges of Ireland that lists, William, Margaret, also lived in Quincy,Robert, John and Jane as children of Robert (1853) and Agnes Hume Grange

Further to my last memo I note in the book that James, son of Hugh (1805)was born in 1826 and Married Agnes Graham age 21, in Templepatrick Presbyterian Church on 2nd of January in 1846. She was the dauaghter of John Graham, a farmer living at Ballyhartfield near Dough. Robert, brother of the bride was the best man while Elizabeth, James's sister, was brdesmaid. No further particulars of James can be traced in this district. It is remarkable that although James was the eldest member of the family, William fell heir to the Thornditch farm and Robert the second son was placed in Castle farm. As this was the period of the potato famine in Ireland when so many people (about two million) left the country for other lands, principally the U.S.A., it may have been that James and Agnes emmigrated. From what I can tell James was in the seventh generation of Granges and his ancestry can be traced back to 1624. Note" that my father, Robert, was of the 8th generation. From what I can detect your Grange, James, was the brother of my GG Grandfather Robert . Hope this helps you with your search?

The book, The Granges of Ireland, was compiled by R. T. Grange (1896) from Ballyclare. Robert was a seargent in the British army and, my cousin, Robert Baxter, obtained the book for me. Robert Baxter's mother was a Grange, my father's sister and Robert got the book for me when I was in Ireland in 1977 on a visit. Robert passed away a few years ago so I'm not sure how to advise you about obtaining one.
