MARY HANNAH GRANT/COPELAND

Seeking any information re Mary Hannahr Grant nee Copeland(my gt grandmother)
she was last sighted on the Scottish census of 1881,with George Nelson Grant and youngest daughter Mabel (my gandmother) (in Perth)

Mary Hannah was born in Derby 1850, and the family normally lived there, I do`nt know why they were in Scotland in 1881, however, at that time their son George Nelson was in Kibble Reformatory School for stealing.(No reords are now available)
Its possible there may have been Grant relations there,
which could have explained why their son had been there.

Either in or after 1881 Mary Hannah disappeared, and it seems likely that she & George Nelson may have split up.
In 1891 he had acquired a new "wife" Annie Packer, whom he married in 1910 in Derby, they were then living in Leicester at that time.

I have recently seen on someones family tree (Roots of Buckingham)
details of Mary Hannah and George Nelson, and it was stated that Mary Hannah had died in 1919.
Unfortunately, when I contacted the author of the tree, she
claimed that she did not know anything about Mary Hannah!

It is possible that Mary Hannah had adoopted another surname (her partner`s?) and without knowing what that is I cannot trace her.

Can anyone help please,?, did she become one of your ancestors?? someone somewhere must have known about her, otherwise she could not have been on the above mentioned
tree!, where did the author of Roads of Buckingham find her?

I have tried wading through different family trees on Ancestry, starting with Copeland, so far, without success.
If anyone knows anything please please contact me, before time runs out
Any information would be so gratefully received, thank you.!

Can anyone help plase, I have been searching for several years now to find what happened to my gt grandmother
MARY HANNAH GRANT (nee Copeland) she and her husband George Nelson Grant parted sometime in or after 1881, they were last traced in Perth Scotland on the 1881 census

It is obvious that Mary Hannah must have adopted a new surname, perhaps that of her new partner? and without knowing what that was, I am unable to trace her

George Nelson had a new "wife" by 1891 whom he married in 1910 (Annie Packer) stating he was now a widower.

Recently I have seen on someone else`s family tree, details about Mary Hannah, stating that she died in 1919.
However, on contacting the author she stated she knew nothing about Mary Hannah ! especially her surname.

Do you know whose family tree Mary Hannah appeared on? apparently the persons tree I saw, was in the habit of "lifting" details from other people`s trees!
If I can only find the person who entered the original details, please please can you help.
I am looking for ancestors of Margaret McPherson Grant, born 12 Aug 1818 in Elgin Scotland. Her father was Robert but nothing is known of her mother.

Robert, ESQ was of London when Margaret married Lewis Wiseman in Aberdeen on 2 June 1838. Family oral history says that Robert GRANT was either Provost of Dingwall or Laird of Elgin who disapproved of his daughter marrying a rope maker and fisherman, so they eloped to marry away from home.. It appears that Margaret's mother may have been deceased by this time

Anyone have these people lurking in their tree?

John Grant (born about 1821) and Elizabeth (born about 1823) had a daughter, Sarah Jane, born 1848 in Dalwood, Devon. Their parents were not mentioned, and I have been unable to find any further reference to them.

Sarah Jane (known as Ann) went on the marry James Harris of Wambrook in 1872, and they were my great-grandparents.

I'd welcome any information on the Grant family.

Ashley Sampson

My great grandparents were married in Virginia, MN in St Louis County in 1902. They had a baby girl who died, then in 1914 they had a son. My grandfather Carl says that his sister was buried in Virginia, MN before he was born.

I searched a few online records of cemeteries in the area and didnt find anything that I could positively ID as her. I just know she was born and died somewhere between 1902 and 1913 and her parents are Ida and Elias J Grant.

They also lived in Keewatin, MN for a short while, so if he is mistaken that is another place she could be buried. Can anyone do a cemetery lookup or guide me on how to find her?

William Grant I (1699-1794) Scotland

I am looking for any legit primary sources that prove who William Grant's Parents are/if his name was really William Douglas back in Scotland. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

_________________________________________

Here is what I have so far:

1. World Family Tree by Family Tree Maker Vols. 3-7

[Establishes that William Grant fought for the Pretender’s Army and Immigrated to the American Colonies when he was 16 years old, which is 1716].

“My mother's maiden name was Grant. My grandfather and great grandfather both Wm Grant. Wm Grant, Senior was born in Scotland and pressed into the Pretender's Army at 16 years of age was taken by Wm as prisoner and owing to his youth was sent as a convict or pressed man into America and sold into seven years service, while his companions were all shot. By his morality and industry he secured the good will of his masters and in the fourth year of his service he married Margaret Vemon, the daughter of an English Lord of that name in Ireland, and who had suffered in the siege of Deny. (1688) She had become estranged from her friends on account of the settlement of an estate and followed the fortunes of a female friend whose husband had purchased the time of my great-grandfather.
An anecdote is told of him, that, on the day of his marriage, he thought he could not afford to lose the day, as his master would have him make it up at the end of three years yet to serve, so he went to his plowing, as usual but of course and in his shirt sleeves. When he saw the clergyman coming, he hitched his horses and came into the house. After the ceremony was over, he kissed his bride, picked up his hat and started back to his plow. His master watched him until he returned to his horses, then called him to come in and fetch his horses. He then told him he was free but if he would stay with him, he would give him $50 per year and after that higher wages.
His wife had a diamond ring she had retained from since the estrangement from her father's house, which she now exchanged for ten cows and they afterwards became wealthy and their sons andgrandsons were honored and respected citizens. Their grandson. Gen. John Grant, at one time was supposed to be the richest man in Kentucky.
I relate these things to show what industry and honest perseverance will do. My grandfather, Wm Grant (Jr.) married Elizabeth Boone, sister of Daniel Boone, who was Wales, who imigrated (sic.) to Pennsylvania and with my grandparent to North Carolina and settled near the line between that state and Virginia. When I look back at that colony and trace it, through three generations, not to say four, that it has passed, I am forcibly reminded of the great advantages of a right start in laying the foundations of society. If it is well done, it will tell to the future generations, we may well say to all eternity. And though I fear the example of our Pilgrim fathers is fast passing away from their descendants, we can still trace it throughout New England and their commerce, manufactories and their natural resources, enterprise or go-aheadiliveness.”

2. This coincides with comments about the Pretender’s Army in Source 1].\

6. Richardson, Hester Dorsey.
Cool book - Check out "The Descendants of Elizabeth and William Grant" by Dianne Clem Hirschi. I found myself listed in this book. My line is: Barb Randall Barney>Beatrice Simmons>James Simmons> Charlotte Bell>Delilah Grant>Thomas Grant>John Grant>John Grant> William Elizabeth! It lists a lot of info about the Grants in Virginia etc. Check it out, it may help you with your research! PS I have no interest in this book other than I found it helpful and thought you might too.

Elizabeth Inez Grant - Death entry in Florida Dade in 1954.

Hi I am wondering if someone can help me, I am looking for an Elizabeth Inez Grant born on the 17th March 1875 in the Parish of Duthil, Carr-Bridge, Inverness-Shire, Scotland. Her Father was a William Gow Grant born of the same place and her mother Annie Johnson born in Yorkshire England. I found records of Elizabeth departing Liverpool on 2 occasions for the USA, 1st on the Oceanic arriving on the Oct 03, 1906, and again on the Jan 17, 1908 on the Mauretania. She was single on both these occasions. I have searched Ancestry for her in the USA census results, but only came up with a death entry for Dade Florida in 1954. Can anyone confirm for me that this is my Elizabeth Inez Grant, and perhaps find her in the census results for the USA, and her naturalization papers for the States. It appears that she remind single as the name in the Florida death register is Elizabeth Inez Grant, would she be registered under her maiden name even is she had married?
Kind regards Carol

Article in Lansing, IA newspaper:

Charles V. Grant, of this city and Miss Mildred A. Condon, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. T. The groom is at present day clerk at the Cameron House, were the newly married couple will reside for the present ---[La Crosse Republican and Leader].
Charley's many friends here will learn this bit of news with surprise, but will take earlies opportunity of extending congratulations and best wishes.
Benjamin E. Grant of Adair Co., Iowa (b. 1880)

I am having difficulty reconciling information found while researching my great-great grandfather, Benjamin E. Grant, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

What I know to be true:

Benjamin E. Grant (b. 1880, Iowa) was married and had a child named Charles O. Grant, born in 1903 in Maine.

Charles O. Grant married Ina McClintic, b. 1902 in West Virginia. They had a son named Charles Richard Grant, b. 1924 in Iowa.

What I am confused about:

I keep finding conflicting census reports regarding Benjamin's wife. There are at least two (1900 & 1910 U.S. Federal Censuses) that has him married to a Hattie E. Otis, b. 1880 in Iowa. But then in 1920 and 1930, it shows his wife as Lizzie May Clayton, b. 1883 in Iowa.

If you look at the other people on the page for the report with Hattie, it looks like Benjamin's sister, Hattie M (b. 1865), and husband, George W. Jennings, were his neighbors.

The Iowa State Census Collection, 1836-1925 (report date 1925) lists Charles' mother as Hattie. The 1920 Federal Census lists his mother as Lizzie, but I think that might just be because she is listed as Benjamin's wife.

There are also two children with the last name Otis on the report as well (Maria and Dorothy). The 1925 report lists their father as William A. Otis.

Looking up William Otis, I found that he lived with a sister, Hattie Grant, and son Roy Otis (whose mother is listed as May Otis). Both William and Hattie are listed as Divorced.

What I think happened:

Benjamin married Hattie. They had Charles. They divorced.
Lizzie married William Otis. They had Roy, Maria and Dorothy. They divorced.
Benjamin married Lizzie. Charles, Maria, Dorothy, and Lizzie's mother, Sarah Clayton (nee Evans) lived with them.
Hattie and William lived together with Roy, eventually lodging with the Hoyts (per the 1930 Federal Census).

Can anyone confirm or correct this? I'm rather sure that I have it figured out, but I'd like someone else to give me their thoughts.

Thanks!

seeking info on John Grant from Mass. and wife Julia Goodrich from Red Hook N.Y. Their youngest son Elisha Lee Grant married Alvina Hall from Salisbury, Ct. Their sons married into the Fowlers in Winsted, Ct. The info I'm looking for starts in the early 1800 for John and his wife Julia. I have information to exchange starting with their sons and so on. If anyone can be of any help, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Sandy

Grants from Orleans & Plaquemines Parishes, Louisiana

Anyone researching any of the following Grants from early 1800's in Orleans and Plaquemines Parishes of LA?:

Alexander Grant, SR. spouse Julia
Alexander Grant, Jr. spouse Olymphia/Olympe
(He was a naval LT in the Civil War)
Joseph Grant
GM Grant (may be George)
CH Grant (might be Charles Henry)

Alexander Grant Sr was born about 1795-1797 in Scotland.
Alexander Jr. was born abt 1822-24 in New Orleans
Joseph, GM and CH were all born between 1810-1820.
There were also two daughters to Alexander Grant SR. Mary b. abt 1840 and Catherine b. abt 1838 both born in New Orleans.

I am trying to connect my William Washington Grant to this family. William W. was born in New Orleans 1818 and migrated to Alabama, Mississippi, Texas and then to Arkansas where he died. His spouse was Elizabeth Mitchell of Fayette Co., AL.

If anyone has any info regarding any Grants from the New Orleans area during the early 1800's, it would be helpful

Thanks in adavance,
LeannaJV

I would like to offer look-ups for researchers of the Chamberlin and Grant surnames. I have a three volume set called “The Ancestry of Chamberlin and Grant” by June G. Henderson. These books span centuries from the 900’s to the Mayflower immigrants and Revolutionary war soldiers. These books are an amazing resource! They contain information on royalty from a variety of countries from Hungry to England. Please feel free to contact me at swolfy@charter.net if I can utilize these invaluable resources for you!

Police seek relatives of the late -John Richard Grant b. Nov. 7, 1925, in Rochester, N.Y.

Transient dies in NW Iowa motel - and leaves a fortune behind
Associated Press • April 29, 2008
SHELDON, Iowa – Police say a transient man who stayed at the Sheldon Motel left behind a surprising mystery – $263,000.
The Sioux County sheriff’s office was called to the motel on March 31 to investigate the death of a man who lived there five months of the year.

The investigation has turned into what sheriff’s Sgt. Jamison Van Voorst is calling the most interesting case he’s seen in his 14 years with the sheriff’s office.

As Van Voorst and Sheriff Dan Altena investigated the death of
John Richard Grant, they discovered some papers, the back of a gold watch, and other belongings.

Nothing they found in room 20 was too unusual they say. Then came the surprise.

In two vinyl cassette tape cases was $263,000, most of it in $50 and $100 bills.

They immediately began searching for relatives. There was no reason to believe Grant got the money illegally, so it should go to his next-of-kin, they said.

Van Voorst said the sheriff’s office is waiting to hear back from Sioux County Attorney Coleman McAllister, who may have found a brother and a couple of first cousins.

“He (McAllister) has been put in contact with them and they’ll hire their legal counsel,” Van Voorst said.

The brother is said to be working as a harbor master for the U.S. Navy in Japan. The late John Grant, a U.S. Navy veteran, may also have a daughter. Again, nobody seems certain, at least not yet.

Grant had documents showing he served in the Navy during World War II. He was buried April 17 at the Keokuk National Cemetery. His obituary noted he was born on Nov. 7, 1925, in Rochester, N.Y. His parents were Harold and Cora Grant.

Beyond that, there isn’t much to go on.

Eatel Anil, the motel manager, said Grant spent the last two winters at the motel. He parked a white cargo van in the parking lot and kept his room tidy.

“He would go out shopping when I went in to clean,” says Anil. “He was a nice and clean person. He never messed up anything. He stayed with me, that’s how I knew him.”

Anil said Grant paid $500 a month to stay at the motel. Officials say he had also stayed in Kansas, Minnesota and near Chicago.

“The guy kept to himself,” Van Voorst says. “Part of the roadblock is that he pretty much dealt in post office boxes. He had no criminal history.”

The van, Grant’s possessions and the cash are being stored by the sheriff’s office until a family member comes forward.

“We’re getting some information, but it’s difficult,” says Van Voorst. “We really don’t know where to start.”

“Money-wise, this is the biggest case I’ve worked on,” he said. “It’s really been quite a ride.”

Alexander Grant of Oyster Ponds Nova Scotia

I am looking for information on Alexander Grant born in 1771 and died June 25, 1843. He is buried in Christ Anglican Cemetery in Guysborough, Nova Scotia. He married Mary Ferguson in 1808, a widow of Christopher Whittendale, she is also buried in the same cemetery. He purchased land in Oyster Ponds, Guysborough County, Nova Scotia in 1796 and again in the early 1800's. He was my great-great-great grandfather. I have information on his descendants, however I am at a loss as to where he came from. The family story was that he came from Strathspey, Scotland, but we dont know what year or if he came directly to Nova Scotia or via the US. He supposedly also purchased land in River Inhabitants on Cape Breton Island, NS. If anyone has any information I would love to hear from them.
Many thanks

He was in the army in India, and was a bit of a lad. He met my grandmother, Beatrix Kenning, and they produced my mother, Heather. I doo not know if Beatrix and Allan married, but he definitely left them at some stage. I believe that he MAY have had other children, so if you think you may be descended from Allan and Beatrix, PLEASE contact me!

I have a family tree that lists Captain John Grant (I also have him listed as Col.) born 15 August 1744 Doors, Inverness, Scot, married at London March 1762, Miss Jane Bruce, and he died 30 Nov 1833 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His parents were William Grant (b. Strathspey 1710- died Doors, Inverness 1756) married Miss Macintosh, daughter of Mackintosh of Balanaspeck, Inverness-shire and had many children only John (see above) and daughter Emma lived to adulthood. William Grant second marriage to Miss Grant.

Children: John Grant and Jane Bruce
John born January 1763. He fell in action in Holland.
Ann Charlotte born 3 March 1785
Susan Amelia born 22 February 1767
Elizabeth born 1769
John Alexander born 1770
James Francis born 20 October 1771
Elizabeth Henrietta born 3 September 1780
Margaret born 30 November 1783
William Cjhales born 23 May 1787
James Harriet born 8th June 1789
Julia Ann born 24 February, 1792 Married Captain George Kippen 20 Nov 1806 at Lerwick, Scot and had 6 sons and 2 daughters in Sterling area. Emmigrated to Goderich 1841 Died 1871 Galt, Ontario.

The problem is that I have not been able to verify one of these dates!!!! Scotish Index, British, parish records etc.. We know that Julia Ann (also know as Amelia) was born in Nova Scotia. Could all of the children been born during foreign postings? Does anyone connect with any of these names and have any confirming details?

GRANT FAMILY

I am getting back to my family history research after a long absence. I would like to continue assembling a family tree for GRANT.

If anyone would like to exchange GRANT information with me they would be very welcome. Information regarding any family trees bearing this surname would be very helpful to my research as I hope to eventually find connecting ancestors to all individuals bearing this same name worldwide. I would be more than willing to send what information I have by Gedcom, or any other agreed method, to any interested parties. I run Legacy 6 as a family history programme on my computer.

Thanks!
I am searching for any information on my gg grandfather who was born abt 1826 in Grantown, Scotland. He emigrated as a young man to Canada, maybe Montreal and made his way to Gananoque, Ontario. He emigrated to Clayton, Jefferson Co., NY prior to 1860 to work as a stone mason in building the RC church there. He met and married Bridget Maher and had several children, Nellie(Helen), my g Grandmother, Mary, Margaret, James, William and Elizabeth. I can't find any info on his immigration, or relatives in Scotland. Supposedly he had a brother who emigrated to Australia with his sons.

I just came across this: http://clio.fivecolleges.edu/smith/grant/
and thought it may interest someone.

"The Grant Family Papers consist of letters, financial and legal records, photographs, clippings, and other papers of the Elijah Grant family of Millbrook, Conn.

The digitized portion of this collection consists of selected genealogical materials followed by a series of letters of Zilpah Grant Banister (1794-1874) to and from various family members, 1846-1874. Principal correspondents are two of Mrs. Banister's nephews, John Grant (1822-1878), a teacher first at Yale and later at his own private school, and Marcus Grant (b. 1827) on the family homestead farm. All the letters were written after Zilpah Grant Banister's retirement (in 1839) as a teacher at Ipswich Female Seminary, which she had organized and at which she had worked closely with Mary Lyon, and her subsequent marriage and residence in Newburyport, Mass. References are made in the letters to Mrs. Hale and her family (no further identification), Daniel Genny of Oxford, Ohio (influential in the development of Western Female Seminary), to the sons of Joseph Cowles at Oberlin, and to her friend Miss Lyman at Vassar College. John Grant's letters to his aunt seek her counsel as a former teacher and school principal."

William Grant, born about 1811-12, Edinburg, Scotland

I'm still trying to find the parents of William Grant, born about 1811-12 in Edinburg, Scotland. Only his age and place of birth were given on his military papers, but nothing to give me an exact birth date, place, parents, siblings.

He was in the U.S. by Jan 1838, when he enlisted at Lowell, Massachusetts, into the "General Service of the U.S." From then on, he was in the military most of his life, including the Civil War. I have his Civil War records, but noting in them pinpoints his birth date and/or parents.

William married Catherine HALEY supposedly at West Point where he was a drill sergent, it was thought. None of his military papers suggest that, though.

He had five children: (1) William Grant, born 1844 in Houlton Barracks, Maine; (2) John Rodney Grant, born 1849, Fort Snelling, Minnesota; (3) Mary Emma Grant, born 1852, Indiana; (4) James William Grant, born 1854, Jefferson Barracks, Missouri; and (5) Joseph Grant, born 1858, Fort Ripley, Minnesota (my great grandfather).

In 2003 I was sent an email of 2 William Grants who might be my great grandfather, but I'm not sure how to prove which one or if either one is my ancestor. The names given to me were: (1) William Grant, born 29 May 1811, christened 16 Jun 1811, Newbattle, Midlothian, Scotland; parents William Grant and Janet Duncan. (2) William Grant, born 4 June 1811, christened 11 July 1811n North Leith, Midlothian, Scotland; parents James Grant and Alison Paterson. Both places of birth, I believe, are by Edinburg.

The first one, whose wife was Janet DUNCAN seems possible, for William Grant's first son (also William!) named their 5th child Frederick DUNCAN Grant. But how do I prove their (meaning William and Janet) son William is my William?

Are there records in Scotland of those leaving the country? Like a passport? If so, where would I check to find out?

Any help will be greatly appreciated! There are several of us who have William Grant as our great grandfather and all are stumped at this time.

Mary Read

Grant-Bement Clue To Robert Grant Ancestry?

In scanning various sources, I see dualing ancestries for Jeremy Bement (1807-1849) of Seneca Falls, NY. My question would be, which is the authoritative lineage? I have seen one lineage which has him descending from John Bement (b/1776), Jesse Bement (1740-1790) and John Bement (1702-1756). In that research, Jesse is the younger brother of the Abigail who married Azariah Grant (1722-1798) and had a son Azariah Grant (1750-1822) as well as a grandson Azariah Grant (1782-1825). These Grants were of the Grant of Windsor CT line.
I descend from Robert and Anna (Grant) Grant. Anna's line is from Grant of Watertown, but Robert's ancestry is not established. I strongly suspect Robert comes from the Grant of Windsor family, in part because he had a grandson named Azariah Grant, and two great grandsons also named Azariah Grant. The Azariah who was the grandson of Robert Grant died in Seneca Falls in 1835 and is buried in the same cemetery where Jeremy Bement buried two of his young children.
I find it too much of a coincidence for the Bement children to be buried in the same cemetery as my Azariah Grant, especially if the above Bement ancestry is true, which would also make Jeremy the second cousin of an Azariah Grant, the first cousin once removed of an Azariah Grant, and the grand nephew of another.
