Found in old papers--an undated obituary clipping from unspecified Iowa newspaper "Jesup--Services for Mrs. Edith Leggett, 63 who died Friday at the Iowa Soldiers Home at Marshalltown, will be 2 pm Tuesday at the Parker Funeral Home; burial in the Cedar Crest Cemetery; survivors include one sister, Mrs. Alfred Wilson of Grinnell, and one brother, the Rev. Paul W Ludden of Silver Springs, Md." Records seem to point to Edith Ludden born June 24, 1906 in Iowa died March 1970 in Iowa and Paul William Ludden born September 4 1903 and died September 1990 in Iowa. I'm looking for connections to my grandmother Laura Grattan born Dec 5, 1867 and died Nov 1918 in Jesup, Iowa--married to S Fletcher(unknown), then Mathias Wickersheimer (1863 in Germany-died November 1917 in Jesup).

Bob

Just started looking for my Grattan ancestors. My grandmother was Mary Grattan (b. 1903 in Co Cork). Her father was a Thomas Grattan of Loughbrickland, Co Down born around 1867. I think his mother was scottish. I know he travelled to the USA in the early 20th century and met and married Ann(i)e Keane, seamstress of Co. Cork there but they came back to Cork for the birth of my grandmother, their only child. I understand they went back to the USA later and left the child in Ireland with her grandparents. They returned to live in Dunmanway, Co Cork where he died in about 1937. He was an Episcopalean and she a Catholic and this caused great consternation in the family. This is all I know. The only other thing my grandmother said was that the Grattans lived in Goodmayes? Road in Loughbrickland.

Could this be the same family you were looking for?

my grandparents are Jack and Gwen Grattan. they originally lived in minnesota but moved to texas in the early 1950's. they had a daughter Michelle, my dad Patrick John, and Maureen. Then my dad married Gayle (my mom) and they had me (Shelly Diana), John Paul Anson and Nathaniel Evan. Michelle had 2 sons and so did Maureen, making me the oldest grandchild and the only granddaughter. other than the afore mentioned people it seems that our branch of the family tree fell off into a void. no family other than these is known to me. if any of those names ring any bells to anyone it'd be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Thanks for your reply. I will add the info to my other leads and update you when we are back. Although Robert Grattan is referenced, we have been searching for the immigrant, John C. Grattan's background with little luck. Still have public records to check here. Certainly found Grattan is not a Irish name, but more likely Welsh. Lucy Novak

How exciting that you are there. I got your message and quickly reread my information concerning John Grattan. His grandson John Gamble wrote John Grattan was born in Ireland, left as a young man and went to Scotland, where he married a Scottish born wife. They then came to America with 2, maybe 3 children in tow. Oldest child, Catherine was born in Ireland @1751 and came to America age 8,narrowing the date of travel to 1758-9. Maybe John, Jr. and/or Elizabeth were born before the journey. Grandson says Grattan left Ireland after disagreement with the government, and owned and operated mills on both sides of the Atlantic. Maybe something to look at tax/business/property records.
Don't know if Grattans joined up with other Scots-Irish in Europe, or in Philadelphia, but adjoining area Augusta landowners with close ties in worship and later in marriage include Gamble and Poague.

Somewhere I got the story that there were a few Irish Grattan brothers- some settled in the North, some in Dublin. I know the Dublin branch included Robert aka ROBIN and JOHN, who were friends of Jonathan Swift, author and Dean of St Patrick's of Dublin. Swift left them both items in his will.

Best of luck, and please let me know what, if anything, you find. I would also like to touch base with you on your mother and her connection.
AMY GRATTAN

I am in Belfast Ireland NOW, til July 11, trying to find the origin of John C. Grattan who immigrated to Philadelphia, then Augusta Co. Virginia. My mother is descended from him. We thought he was the brother from northern Ire. and Henry was from Dublin, but today I was able to find some record of Henry's family and he did not have a brother named John. So I am looking in local Presbyterian church records for his origin. Know he was married to Eliz. Brown and left Ireland about 1761 (not 1730s). Couldn't find his name in passenger lists from Philadelphia. At dead end sort of, but if you have any other info, please email me!
Thanks, Lucy Novak

Re: Robert Grattan (Dublin, Ireland)

Alice - Please contact me directly - I would like to exchange information with you. re Robert Grattan.

Our family has MANY Roberts, and several Frances, dating back to the early 1700's. The first Grattan in our line to come to America, JOHN GRATTAN, came through Philadelphia in the 1730's with a wife and at least 2 small children, John Jr. and Catherine, possibly a third. They traveled down the Valley Road and settled near Mt Crawford, Augusta County, Virginia along with many other Scotch-Irish families.

I have a book with city directory listings for Dublin in the 1700's which refers to a ROBERT GRATTAN. I beleive he is the same one referred to in Jonathan Swift's will ( Dean of St Patrick's Dublin, and the author) , as ROBIN GRATTAN. The same will also refers to a JOHN GRATTAN. I found a copy of the will in old family papers dating from the 1860's, and so I think that both the brothers John and Robert in the will are probably in our family line, but have no proof.

You are right about Henry Grattan not having a son to pass on the name directly. I have never been able to make a connection of our line to Henry Grattan other than a family explaination from the early 1800's that there were two Grattan brothers in Northern Ireland, in the area of Belfast. One brother stayed in the north, and his family line included Henry. The second brother moved to Dublin and we are said to be of that branch. Apparently, our John Grattan left Ireland where he operated mills, in over some disagreement with the government. He had an older relation (Uncle? Brother? Cousin?) named CHARLES who lived in Greenbrier County, what is now West Virginia. I had not heard of any other relations in the Americas.

Please contact me - I may have more specifics for you. I would be interested in information on FRANCES and the other siblings that you refered to - it may help me connect the Grattans in Ireland and America. THanks .
Amy Grattan

grattan-roscommon

In response to P. Moore's messages earlier this year -- and the person who responded 6/19/99:

my Grattan's are also from the area around Carrick on Shannon, on the Roscommon side of the River. My ancestor Peter (whom I call Peter II) was m. there and came here in 1837, and I was finally able to 'locate' his parents, having collected other roscommon grattan info in the process.

Timing wise, my Peter II is probably same generation as the father of your Owen -- perhaps then even an uncle of Owen.

Interestingly, I recall someone telling me, some years ago, of a Grattan who died at sea back in the 1800's. Could have been someone connected to Owen, even youraelf for all I can recall -- or it may have been someone in Ireland during my first vist there in the mid 80's. I will go back thru my notes to see if I find any reference.

I believe there is a direct tie between the Grattons/ans and Graltons of Counties Leitrim and Roscommon more on that later, and also on other people searching Roscommon Grattans.

But P. Moore, I will be happy to share any info I have that is useful to you.

Also, I am very interested in corresponding with the person who replied on 6/19, saying "my ancestors also came from roscommon...but settled in western NY state - Macedon ..." I have traced alsmost all of the Macedon Grattans/ons and am related to them all (with 1 or 2 possible exceptions). And so I am related to the person who wrote the 6/19 message.

Best wishes,

John Grattan
JGrattan@frontiernet.net
RE: Owen Grattan, born abt 1835 in Roscommon.

Owen Grattan is my g-grandfather and I posted information abt him and his family to rootsweb a couple years ago. I assume that's where you obtained his name. Perhaps not?

I have done extensive research on Owen and his family. He came immediately to MN after emmigrating from Ireland. Several older siblings were already in MN when Owen arrived with his mother in 1865.

I am very interested in learning why you believe there is a connection between Owen and the other 2 Grattans you mention [Peter and Abigail]. Please email me so we can discuss and share information.

Grattan/O'Donnell

Looking for a connection of my O'Donnell relatives to the Grattan family. My ggf Andrew Ryan married Mary O'Donnell in Canada(New Brunswick) in 1855. They migrated to Oshkosh WI in 1882. Mary had a sister, Catherine O'Donnell, that lived with them for awhile. In an obit for Andrew and Mary's daughter it listed a P.H. Grattan as a relative, possibly married to Mary and Cathrine's sister. Mary and Catherine's parents are Joseph O'Donnell and Ellen Ryley. I have found Catherine buried with the Grattan's in Oshkosh. I'm trying to find who was married to a Grattan. Help please.

Also with them is a Catherine O'Donnell. My ggf Andrew Ryan married Mary O'Donnell in Canada in 1855, migrated to Oshkosh in 1882. Mary and Catherine O'Donnell were sisters. In an obit of Mary and Andrew's daughter, P.H.Grattan was a relative. Could this be who you were looking for.

Hi Amy, Have you found any information on John Grattan's
parents or his wife Elizabeth Brown's? I noticed that their
granddaughter Peachy had a middle name Ridgeway. The Ridgeways lived in Offaly where a great many of the Grattan's lived in the 17th-19th centuries. I wonder if there is a clue there.

Re: Grattan

I am researching my wife’s BENSON family from Watervliet, Albany County, NY, and I have traced them back to the original immigrants, John and Catherine BENSON, and several of their older children. In the 1850 census, Sarah BENSON, age 16, born NY, was living with her parents. Her father, John BENSON was not in the 1860 census and is probably the John BENSON, b. 1795-1800 in Ireland, d. 3 October 1850 in Albany County, NY, and is buried in St. Patrick’s Cemetery there. His tombstone also shows that he was from County Leitrum in Ireland as well. In 1860, I found Catherine BENSON living with the Patrick GRATTAN family, so I was working under the presumption that Sarah GRATTAN in 1860 was the same person as Sarah BENSON in the 1850 census but did not know for sure.

My wife is a descendant of Sarah’s older brother, John BENSON, b. abt. 1830 in Ireland, who married Jane McCOY. Their son, John F. BENSON, married Bridget WALSH, and lived at 2326 Broadway in Watervliet, where all of their children were born including my wife’s grandmother, Mary Ann (Benson) CARROLL RYAN, 1893-1996.

I was very excited to find your post, as I am very interested in learning more about my wife’s BENSON line. I am interested in corresponding with you and sharing information about the BENSON and related lines. You are the first person I have encountered who is descended from a different line of this same BENSON family.

Bailey Francis
Atlanta, GA
