No, we are not closely related. My genealogy software says I am Joseph-David-Polydore's sixth cousin once removed.

All Gravels in the United States and Canada who are of French-Canadian ancestry descend from one couple: Joseph-Masse Gravel and Marguerite Tavernier, who married at Quebec City on 1 May 1644. As your friend Dave works his way back, he will eventually arrive at this couple.

Here's another piece of information to help Dave climb the Gravel tree. Go to Phyllis Nordstrom's Gravel web site at http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/n/o/r/Phyllis-J-N... You will mention of George and wife Jeanne Malboeuf in family group 223 on Phyllis' page 36-0063 (once you get to her web site, simply substitute "0063" for the "0001" in the URL to get there quickly). From there, Dave can follow the line back to Joseph-Masse Gravel and then back into France. My colleague, Phyllis died in an automobile accident in California several years ago, so don't try to contact her. Fortunately, her family has left her web site on the Internet for the use of Gravel researchers.

He did, their grandson David Gravel lives in Wayne MI. I came across this on Blance:

Name: Blanche G Gravel
Birth Date: 10 Dec 1900
Death Date: 10 Jun 1979
Gender: Female
Residence: Dearborn, Wayne, Michigan
Place of Death: Huron, Wayne, Michigan

I'll pass this on to Dave, he has just started to search his roots. He'll be excited to get this information. Now would you be a cousin? Dave was born around 1960

Thank you very much

I have in my data base a Georges Gravel (Athanase - Virginie Thibodeau) who married Marie-Jeanne Malboeuf (David - Ursule Lariviere) on 4 October 1886 at Notre Dame-de-Bon-Secours Catholic Church, Montebello, Papineau County, Quebec. Source: parish records of Notre Dame-de-Bon-Secours Catholic Church (civil records copy), Montebello, Papineau County, Quebec; page 143 in 1886, marriage record #10 in 1886; available in ancestry.ca's Drouin data base (contains a scanned image of actual record).

This couple had a son, Joseph-David-Polydore Gravel, born in Ottawa, Ontario on 16 September 1899, who married Blanche Nadeau about 1925. While I have no direct evidence that David and Blanche came to Detroit, their son Joseph-Philippe was born in Ottawa in 1932 and married in 1956 in Essex County, Ontario. Essex County is just across the border from Detroit.

Emile Gravel, b Quebec in late 1800's

My grandmother was Grace Gertrude Pragert and her father was Emile Gravel. Grace was his first child (b 1912), and her mother died either in childbirth or within a couple of years thereafter. Emile remarried and his new wife(Minnie Pragert) did not want to take care of the baby, so she was 'adopted' by her stepmother's Aunt Clara Pragert. Emile and Minnie had twins - Betty and Bob in 1923.

Emile's father was Alexandre and his father was Ignace.

Does this ring a bell with anyone ?
Okay, the book I have has Elisabeth listed as b 4-19-1651 and married to Mathieu Cote on Sept 11, 1669. Mathieu's parents names are Jean Cote and Ann Martin. Elisabeth's parents names if you don't have them are Joseph Gravelle and Marguerite Tavernier.

so far that is all the book says -- I'll keep reading and see what else I can find.

I am looking for information on the marriage of Israel Gravel and (Marie?) Victoria Charbonneau. I know that they resided in Blackstone Mass in 1943. I am trying to track them for a possible connection as i have Charbonneau in my tree and i know a Gravel where i work and am trying to see if there is a connection between us. I think Israel's family came from Ste Jean de Mathe, as did some of my Charbonneau family line. I can be contacted at Jmus 2u@aol.com
Thank you to any who may be able to help me with this,
Joe

Gravels in Morrison County Minnesota

Hello,
I'm looking for more information on my great-grandmother's family. Her name was Delena (Gagnon) Cota. She had an older brother Adolph (born abt. 1868) who married Albina Gravell (nort sure of exact spelling) of Little Falls, Morrison County, Minnesota. As far as I can tell they did not have any children, although I may be mistaken. She also had an younger brother, Duffield (born abt. 1884) who disappeared around the time of World War I.

According to the 1885 Minnesota State Population schedule they were living with Honore and Adelaide Gagnon (both in their sixties at that time), and I believe may have been their grandparents or another relative. Also according to the 1885 schedule Adolph and Delena were born in Canada, while Duffield was born in Minnesota.

If you have any information on Adolph or Duffield Gagnon, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks,

Andrea Cota

Marleau/Marlowe surname posting (Marguerite Gravel)

Hi Jeannette---saw your posting on the Marleau/Marlow message board---I am Geraldine Marlowe from Malone, NY---have been doing extensive family genealogy on the Marleau/Marlow/Marlot/Marlo families. I am familiar with the Shari Joos you e-mailed---she & a Madonna Tavernier Holden both have Marleau ancestors that came from Malone, NY. My question for you-----how are you related to the Marleau/Marlow/Marlot/Marlo families? The GGGrandparents who immigrated to northern NY in or around the mid 1850's were from Ste Genevieve, Ste Philomenna & Ste Joachim, Quebec, CA areas---their names were Charles & Philomenna Rollin Marleau-----they had ten children---we are still researching for two daughters named Elizabeth Marleau (may have moved to New Jersey) and Udelia/Delia Marleau---we don't know who they married, lived, death or buried. If you are related to this Marleau/Marlow family---have your ever heard reference to an Aunt Elizabeth/Betty or and Aunt Delia. I have alot of Marleau/Marlow/Marlot/Marlo information----would be glad to share it with you----maybe can put some lost pieces together-----let me know----my e-mail: gmarlowe@twcny.rr.com Thanks

Your suspicions are correct. Sylvie Cloutier and "Cedulie" Cloutier are the same person. The priest who married Joseph in Lewiston simply got it wrong.

Joseph is actually Joseph-Magliore, born 14 October 1846 and baptised the next day at St. Joseph-de-Beauce. In his baptismal record, his mother is listed as Sylvie Cloutier. See the parish records of St. Joseph-de-Beauce Catholic Church, St. Joseph-de-Beauce, Beauce County, Quebec; volume 13, page 77, unnumbered baptismal record in 1846; available on LDS FHL microfilm #1294973.

Also, in the parish marriage repertoire for Sts. Peter and Paul, there are marriages for Joseph-Magliore's siblings Thomas, Pierre and Onesime, and the mother is listed as Sylvie Cloutier. See Begin, Marriages of St. Peter & Paul, Lewiston, Maine (1869-1979), page 305; Lewiston, Dominican Fathers, 1982; available at the Library of Congress, Local History and Genealogy Room, call number F29.L63B43 (1982); see also the Loiselle Index of French-Canadian Marriages (Supplement). Only for Joseph-Magliore is the mother listed as "Cedulie" Cloutier.

Finally, the 1851 Canadian Census shows Joseph, age 6, and shows his mother as Sylvie. See the 1851 Canadian Census for St. Joseph parish, Dorchester County, Canada East [Quebec]; available on Library and Archives Canada microfilm C-1120; census district 7, subdistrict 94, page 67, lines 17-27, enumeration date of 11 January 1852.

Adrian J. The 1901 Canadian Census says Victoria Charbonneau was born 15 Sept 1887 in Quebec; but see the 1930 U.S. Census which says she was born in Massachusetts of parents born in French Canada.
Joseph GRAVEL & Demerise MARTEL - Lewiston, Maine

I have a marriage, at Sts. Peter & Paul in Lewiston, Maine for Joseph GRAVEL m. Demerise MARTEL 1 AUG 1881.

Parents for Joseph are listed as Marcellin GRAVEL and "Cedulie" CLOUTIER.

There seems a strong probability that Marcellin GRAVEL, married to “Sylvie” CLOUTIER on 05 OCT 1830 at St-Joseph-de-Beauce, is the same Marcellin GRAVEL, (father of Joseph Gravel married to Demerise Martel) at Lewiston.

The fact that Cedulie and Sylvie are not the same name has created some uncertainty for me however it seems that there is only one “Marcellin Gravel” who fits the time period.

Anybody with information that might confirm my suspicion, please email me directly or reply here.
