I am looking for Huguenots with the name Gravier or Grauier. I have found one listing (IGI) for a Francois Grauier, bapt. 1624 at Threadneedle Street French Church, London (father: Pierre, mother Sara). This name in England may have gone through the transformation--Greyar, Grayer.

Hello Carrie, I am also researching the Gravier surname. My Uncle Steve Gravier is looking for his ancester's or relatives. His family did not speak much of the other relatives and nothing about ancestors. His father was Stephen Gravier who was born aboard ship from France to N.Y. Do you have any other names? It would really help. I have found 76 Gravier's located across the U.S. That's not much considering. Steve wants to know who his grandfather was, so I am trying to get that information for him. Steve's father Stephen lived in Manhattan, N.Y. all of his life. If your grandmother is still living, she is your best source for information. Does she have a family Bible? that may help you also. Have you checked census records for that time period? That's also a good source. I will pass your name on to my Uncle and see if he remember's the name you gave me. Please write to me at cdchumphrey@peaklink.com I would like you to keep in touch and let me know what you find. I will do the same.
Gravier

Hi again, when I tried to find more info on my uncle's line, I looked up the 1920 N.Y.C. Census. I found an Ernest Gravier whose wifes name was Mary. Both listed their place of origin from France. Their children were: Louise, Theresa and George. The children were born in N.Y.C. and it also listed a John Schmidlier (also from France) who was a brother-in-law. This may have been Mary's brother. At the time of the Census, Ernest was 46 in 1920. They lived on 416 East 65th Street in Manhattan, N.Y. When I told my Uncle what I had found he told me that he had an uncle by that name and that he had lived around the corner from his father's (Stephen) house. He remembered his father telling him that he (the older Stephen) was born aboard ship from France. However the older Stephen did not tell him much of his history. I can only guess that people were not interested in their genealogy until lately. It seems to me that the older you get, the more interest you have in the past. Please write and let me know if these names ring a bell and if you have more information on this family. I have been attempting to find this family history for about four years now with little success. Thank you so much for responding. Donna

Donna: Thanks for your response. My grgrandmother was Marian DeLaGravierre Miller and yes I believe she was from France. Her father, I understand was Count Jean Baptiste DeLaGravierre. Her parents both died in an epidemic. She had at least two brothers. I have no idea what their names were and they fought on opposite sides in the war and both were killed. This was told by an elder relative. I have yet to prove it, though. Good luck in your search also. BetteC
