I found Henry's obituary in the New York Times so I know his date and place of death and date of birth. Also, I know some dates for Florence Louis Underhill Greaves and their daughter's family. My focus is the Sikes family with Julia Louise Sikes Underhill being the mother of Florence Louise Underhill.

I am trying to find out any info on Jean Grace Carnague (Greaves) as she is the sister of my step grandmother who was married to my mothers father. I was wondering if she was still alive.
Regards,
Rebecca Jones

Christina Greaves was a daughter of William Greaves and Christina (or Christianna) as listed in the 1861 and 1871 censuses for Bedlington, Northumberland. Christina and Alfred Hunter were in the 1881 census for Bedlington. It appears that their marriage was the one referenced in FreeBMD in the Sept. quarter 1874 in Morpeth (which is next to Bedlington). Has anyone done more research on this family? Has anyone found William Greaves in the 1851 and 1841 censuses? You may contact me directly at ken.graves@gravesfa.org if you want.

We have some of the same names in our families. My Greaves are from Gomersal, Yorkshire. My granmother was Laura Alice Greaves and name one of her sons Leslie, there is also a Garland Leslie who was Laura's brother and one is named Albert. I have a James Greaves I believe married Eliza Sleath 1852, Thomas who married Mary Johnson, the daughter of John Johnson and Rachel Bywater. I don't know if this connects but it's fun to try.
Fascinated to come across this whilst researching 'Greaves of Derby' as John Greaves and Dorothy Room are my Gt.Gt.Gt.Gt.Grandparents, they had another son in 1790 George Greaves from whom I am descended. I was brought up in Burton on Trent and know the area very well. I underst and from an elderly relative that we are descended from the Greaves of Derby who were very well to do but apparently in the 1700s sometime an eldest son ran off with the third housemaid and was cut off with a shilling by his Father! This is what I am looking into.

My great great grandfather was Henry Greaves, who moved to New York City from Honley with his wife Sarah Ann Bradley in 1869. According to the infromation I have, Henry was born in 1841. The family lived on a lake close to Honley, which later became a park called Hope Bank. Henry's father and mother were David and Mary Ann Greaves.

Henry married SArah Ann Bradley who was born in Honley September 13, 1838. They had eight children, the second being Sarah, born Yorkshire 1863, married Herman Kuehne, and was my maternal grandfather, Charles Kuehne's mother, died Dec. 1947.

I have more information on the other children of Henry and Sarah Ann that I would be happy to give you if you like. Where do you live now? We are visiting Honley in late July.
Hello Sue I am most interested in your research, I too descend from Benjamin Greaves and Mary Brammer. They were my 4 x Great Grandparents. I believe that Benjamin's parents were Jonas Greaves and Barbara Slack but that hasn't been proved at this stage. My connection is through Benjamin's daughter Annice(1827-97) who married James Muscroft at Manchester Cathedral, Lancashire England 27th April 1845. She was indexed as Alice on her marriage certificate. I hope this helps, if you want to contact me direct it is mrkkpr@yahoo.co.uk bye for now from Mark Keeper

Thank you Rob I really appreciate your quick reply. I have been down these routes, could only get a date of death for Mary Ann, it doesn't have info about when she married etc.. or even info on Thomas' place of birth apart from Derbyshire (I'd love to get hold of a birth cert for him, that would open it all up). I have traced a cert for their daughter Hannah who died young, but it doesn't give the info I desperately need. My tree on Ancestry is only a fraction of my family tree I have uncovered. I have another tree with over 400 in it, but not on the Greaves line, because I am stuck at Thomas. Thanks for your help. I will keep trawling the sites and records.
Ellen Greaves

Hello Ellen
I am also looking for GREAVES. My GG Grandmother was SARAH ANN GREAVES b about 1820 and her father was RICHARD GREAVES who was a Glass Blower in 1841 and a Baker in 1846.She married HENRY LOWDEN FOWLER in 1841 at St Michael's Church Ashton-under-Lyne and was loving at House 3 Charlestown Whitfield Derbyshire on the 1841 Census. HENRY LOWDEN (minus FOWLER) died in 1846 and SARAH ANN married THOMAS HAGUE in 1846 at St Michael's in Ashton-under-Lyne. On the 1851 Census Sarah Ann says she was born in Limehurst Lancashire and they were living at Howard Court Ashton-under-Lyne. Sometime after 1861 SARAH ANN & THOMAS HAGUE went to Liverpool for some reason unknown and were living at Westmoreland Street Liverpool but by 1870 they were back in Ashton-under-Lyne where SARAH ANN died.I have been unable to find any brothers and sisters of SARAH ANN GREAVES.Could there be a connection to my GREAVES?
Regards
Pat

My Greaves are also from Derbyshire, Parish of Repton. Searched for 25 years before I found that out though. John Greaves married Dorothy Room in 1772. Baptised to them were Edward in 1773, John in 1774, Mary in 1776, Charles in 1777 (died a few months later), Dorothy in 1779 and Charles in 1781, William, Sarah in 1784, Thomas in 1787 (13 Apr), Joseph 1787, and 1790. None of these were on IGI...I stumbled some information from a removal order that Edward, who I had found in Newark Notts was sent back to Repton. That led me to ordering a film of the Church Register (Latter Day Saints) and I picked all that out after hours of reading..Lesson...so much is not on IGI!

I agree..so many of our Greaves relatives seem to have come from the Notts/Derby area. So many of the parishes seem to be covered well by the IGI...but as I have stated before in my case the main one, which seems to have helped me greatly, Repton, was not covered very well at all in the IGI. In all likelihood most of our Greaves answers probably lie in a parish somewhere in Derby/Notts..but not in print on IGI. Maybe the answer is to manually search films of Parish Registers transcribing all Greaves found..and then sharing with those interested. For Example I did that for Repton...then sort of did that for Ticknall. Bit of a long process..but it is the one way of ensuring the written records are for sure gone thru. My Repton information, as an example, was put into an Excel spreadsheet. Quite a few entries, maybe 70 - 80 for Greaves there (almost none of that on the IGI)..only 4 - 5 in Ticknall nearby. Just a thought.

Rob Greaves

I saw your family tree on Ancestry...after looking around a bit I'm afraid I found no breakthrough. Have you thought about ordering at least the GRO certificate for Mary's death...I see you know she died in last quarter of 1888. I find by nailing down some confirmed dates..and getting odd bits from the Certificates ordered it can really help.

Rob Greaves

Hi
I am trying to trace the parents of Statira Laforey Beckles born in Barbados in 1800. It looks like her mothers name was Eliza Jane Beckles B abt 1781. Not sure who the father is though. The name Laforey is prominent throughout future generations of these people, and i wondered if there was a conection between the families. The Laforeys goverened some of the islands about that time.
There is also a conection with the Waite surname here in the UK as one of Statiras daughters married a John Francis Waite.
Any help most welcome.
Tony Waite

Sorry Pat > I have never found a connection with the Greaves family from Ashton Under Lyne. I have been down this family line. But couldn't make a connection. The only Sarah Greaves in my family was my Great grandmother, but she was Sarah Ada Cawley before she married.
My Great great grandfather Thomas seems to have just appeared in Liverpool after leaving Derbyshire were he was born, as I think many people did in those days migrating looking for work. Although for 40 years or more he always worked. At first as a warehouseman then as a Customs Officer, so I will persue that line now and find his old employer. I may never find out. Good luck with your search. If you get stuck anywhere else messageboard me. >Ellen<

Hello Paul,I really don't know anymore about where Thomas Greaves b. 1813 was born. This is the info I want, so I can find out where my family come from on my father's side. Thomas has been my brickwall for a few years, just can't get past this point.I found out recently his wife Mary Ann, is called Mary Ann Salthouse b. 1813 in Liverpool, where they met and married pre 1837. I have been able to trace her family no problem, but nothing on the Greaves side, can't even get marriage or birth certs for them or any of their children. Got his death cert, but it didn't tell me where he came from. He worked as a Warehouseman and in later life as a Customs Officer on the docks in Liverpool, He died in Liverpool c.1880. SO the answer to your question is > I don't know if he is related to any of your Greaves family > sorry I am not much help. ~Ellen~

There seems to be so many Greaves families in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. I am researching my Greaves family of Robert Greaves c.1815 from Calverton, Notts who married Sarah Cooper. One of their sons, also named Robert Greaves b.1841 married Rebecca Spencer c.1847 was born in Somercoats, Derbys. They raised 12 children in the Pye Hill/Jacksdale area on the border of Derbys and Notts. - Hannah 1866, Walter 1868, Thomas 1870, Robert 1872, William 1874, Sarah/Sally 1876, Frederick 1878, Florence 1880, Mary 1881, Harry 1882, Anna 1884, and George 1886.
Please let me know if any of this may match your information.
I am the son of Alfred Edward Lane and Ada Jane Ethel Lane formerly Greaves born Lowestoft 13/03/1912. Harold Frank Greaves (later known as Frank H W Greaves) was my mothers brother. For reasons yet unknown they were both placed with Dr Barnado's home. My mother was later adopted but Frank went to USA and served with the Istmian shipping line. My research shows Frank (Harold) was lost at sea when his ship SS Steel Navigator was sunk in the North Atlantic off the US coast on 19 Oct 1942.
I wish to now more about their father Harold Frank Greaves a Smacksman born Mackworth 1881 who marrried Ellen Martha late Hood formerly Wigg born Mutford 1878, at Mutford in 1906. His father was Frederick William Greaves born Derby 1846 who married Miss Jones and then Henrietta Francis Millett. Frederick William Greaves father was Augustus Goring Greaves Derby 1813-1871.
