A tribute to Dean Greenwalt

Dean Greenwalt was killed Sept. 26, 2009, by an auto evading police as he was crossing a street in a crosswalk with a green light. Dean was an inspiration to many of us in our family research. He was a dedicated and careful researcher who was always so willing to share his research and encourage others. He was the one connecting force for several of us extended Greenwalt cousins. Since he was the one who seemed to connect with everyone else his family may not have e-mail addresses for all of you who corresponded with him, so I am posting this message. I am deeply indebted to him for my family research and for enriching my life, even if only online. Marilyn Brien brien@satx.rr.com

David B. GREENAWALT, 1780-1861, prob. s/o Lewis & Eva
David B. GREENAWALT, 1780-1861, is the apparent son of Lewis (a.k.a. Ludwick) & Eva GREENAWALT who moved from PA to Nelson Co., VA (now KY) where he is shown on the 1787 Tax List. That part of Nelson County, KY, became Hardin County, KY, in 1793. I show that Lewis died in Hardin County in Dec 1814, but I did not reference the source. His Will was probated on 13 Feb 1815, Hardin County, KY

You can access an image of the will of Lewis GREENAWALT from the Hardin County Clerk's web site:

http://www.hccoky.org/qGov/Main/Login.aspx?guest=True

Lewis was the son of Joseph GREENAWALT, whose Will, dated, 7 Nov 1795, can be found in Hardin County Will Book A pp. 75-76, and was probated there on 26 Mar 1799.

Bill V.

...

Hi Rory,

I am descended from a younger sister of Hester - Arminta Greenawalt Johnston. Arminta died the day her son (my great-grandfather) was born. In the 1870 census, Elwood is my great-grandfather living with his grandparents. Family lore always stated that Arminta's parents were John Greenawalt and Elizabeth Rudy. Through my research and other descendants of Elizabeth, I've gathered a good deal of information including wills, date of deaths recorded at the courthouse, estate accounts, newspaper articles, Civil War Pension file, and cemetery visits. I was in Huntingdon Co in May and have photos of John and Elizabeth's tombstone. I will be happy to share the records with you.

Recently, I had been researching Montana records looking for Hettie's descendants. Her death certificate confused me with Elizabeth Harris. Thanks for the information on John's mother.
Re: Parents of John GREENAWALT, b. 1821, PA, d. 1893, Huntingdon Co., PA?

Before I go into this, I have a question... where did you get Elizabeth's maiden name, and John's death date and location? Do you have records? I'd love to see them.

I've been researching some possibilities for some time for John, now. I'm descended from his daughter, Hester, who married Corp. David Irvin then Joseph H. Fry.

Anyhoo, I know without a doubt that his mother's name is Catherine. If you look for Greenewalts (with the soundex) in Huntingdon County in 1850, you'll find her living with a Henry Greenwalt who was born 1819. The family is living in Barree, Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.

I found death records for Mrs. Catharine Greenawalt who died of Bilious Fever in Barree, Huntingdon, Pennsylvania in 1870 at age 84 (b. about 1786). She was widowed at the time. This would explain the lack of a husband on the 1840, 1850, and 1870 Censuses which have her living in Barree, Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.

So... the only confirmed information for John Greenawalt's parents is that his mother was Catherine, maiden name unknown. I've been looking into a Jacob Greenawalt and a John Greenawalt. Many researchers have linked a Catherine Arnolt with a John Greenawalt, but in my research I have a huge suspicion that this is her husband, not the same John Greenawalt who married Hannah G. Kolb later.

Another possibility I considered was that she was Catherine Krause who married Jacob Greenewalt, but that Catherine is found living with her children, also widowed (I assume), in Dauphin County in 1850 and 1860... Clearly this isn't our Catherine.

I think there may be another Jacob Greenewalt. There are Trinity Reformed Church records of a John Grunewald, born and baptized in York County, PA, parents being Jacob and Catharine Grunewald. But I don't know what year.

So far, I've only differentiated between Catherine Greenawalts in Huntingdon and Dauphin Counties.

Also, here are the male heads of households with surname Greenawalt (or variation) in the counties next to Huntingdon, PA in 1830:

Philip Greenwald Belfast, Bedford, Pennsylvania
Evi Greenewald Chambersburg, Franklin, Pennsylvania
Godfrey Greenewald Chambersburg, Franklin, Pennsylvania
Martin Greenewald Guilford, Franklin, Pennsylvania
Jacob Greenwalt Guilford, Franklin, Pennsylvania
Nicholas Greenwalt Southampton, Franklin, Pennsylvania
Peter Greenwalt Southampton, Franklin, Pennsylvania
Jacob Greenwalt Washington, Franklin, Pennsylvania
John Greenwalt Washington, Franklin, Pennsylvania

Finally, Hester, John's daughter, is listed on a few censuses as her father being either born in Germany, or being of German lineage. So here's what I'm thinking...

Perhaps John's father was born in Germany, hence the lack of records for him (besides the fact that he died so early).

Our best bet may be searching for death records before 1840 (when Catherine is found living with her two sons, probably Henry and John, in Barree) in Pennsylvania for both German and Pennsylvanian men with the names Grunewalt, Greenawalt, and other variations.

I'm still looking into this. Let me know if you find anything! Hope this was useful. I'd be curious to know where you got the information you have so far. =) Thank you!

Sincerely,
Rory

Parents of Abraham GREENAWALT, 1794-1869, of Mercer Co. or Delaware Co., PA?

I am a desendent from Abraham Greenawalt b.in 1794 Weisenberg twp., PA.(Northampton) marr. abt 1815 same twp., PA.(Lehigh) died between Sept.11-25, 1869 in Mercer, PA. Wife was Maria (maiden name) Fusselman, she died in 1837, he then marr. a Rebecca ? abt 1838-39. He had at least 12 children maybe 14. Names: Jonas (m), Sarah (f), Caroline (f), William (m), Fannie (f), Harriet (f), Rebecca (f), Lucy (f), Benjamin (m), David (m), Abraham (m), Armina Eliza (f), and a John (m) which was killed in the Civil War at Gettsburg in July of 1863. If any of these are your desendents reply I have more info that might be helpful. I have found the Greenawalt family to be quite hard to follow. I am stuck at who's Abraham's mother and father.
Hi Greg,

My ancestor Johann Jacob Grünewald was referenced in your history as having no known connection to your branch. He was born about 1722 in Diedendorf, Alsace (near Sarre-Union,France) to Johann George Grünewald (~1698-??) and Anna Margaretha Matti (~1700-17??). Johann George's father Michael and Johann Jacob's wife were from Canton Bern, Switzerland.

As you note, Johann Jacob arrived in America aboard the Lydia in 1740, married Maria Catherina Elizabeth Filhauer and later Dorthea Sheib. The family resided primarily in Weisenburg Township, Northampton County (originally Buck's County). Although Johann Jacob's mills have been razed, his grand 2 story stone farmhouse and barn still stand. His grave is marked as a Veteran of the Revolutionary War.

Johann Jacob's son Abraham (my line) also served in the Revolutionary War along with several brothers. Johan Jacob was a 1/Lt. and a Captain, Johan George was a Private and later a Lieutenant, and Johannes was a Private and a Drummer-Fifer. All served in the Northampton County Militia so doubtless knew your family. In 1784 - 1785, Johannes located near what was later named Greenawalt Station in Albany Twp, Berks, PA on the Schuykill and Lehigh RR. Greenawalt Station remained a small village, now called Greenawalt.

Abraham II (my line) and his wife Maria Fusselman relocated to Mercer County in West Pennsylania before 1833. (The family may have lived briefly in Lancaster County in 1830.) Abe's farmhouse still stands in Mercer County.

Do you have your family history in the Palatine? Perhaps there is a family connection there.

Dean Greenwalt

Greg,

I remember questioning the research that linked our family to Diedendorf:

1) ANNIVERSARY HISTORY OF LEHIGH COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA VOL II.,Roberts, Stoudt, Krick and Dietrich
Lehigh Valley Publishing Co., 1914

"Jacob Greenwalt, a Palatinate, born in Switzerland, emigrated to America, locating in Philadelphia and upon his arrival there he was sold as a "redemptioner" to a man named Shuler. About the time of his coming to America, he was married to Maria Catharina Elizabeth Filhour a native of Germany, then of Montgomery county., Pennsylvania."

2) EARLY HISTORY OF THE JACOB GRÜNEWALD FAMILY OF LEHIGH AND BERKS COUNTIES, PA by William Rickenbach, 1940

“Although it has been stated that Jacob Grünewald came to Pennsylvania in 1738, available records show the arrival of no Jacob Grünewald in that year. Records show that in 1741, there arrived at Philadelphia on the “Lydia” one Jacob Greenwald, aged 18, who on September 29, 1741, took oath of allegiance to the King of England. According to family tradition, he was born in Zurich, Switzerland and left that country to avoid conscription."

3) EIGHTEENTH CENTURY EMIGRANTS

200. GRÜNEWALD, JACOB age 18 Diedendorf=67260 Sarre-Union, FR
Lydia, 1741

Dean Greenwalt

Much of our family research was done by Barbara Leimbach, a descendant of Abraham Greenwalt III in our line. From material she provided, I suggest searching for a copy of "EIGHTEENTH CENTURY EMIGRANTS" which may give a Palatine town of origin for your branch. From there, you would depend on church records.

One correction, Johann Jacob arrived on the Lydia in 1741, not 1740 as I stated.

No, we have not applied for SAR or DAR.

Please let me know what you find, we may find a connection after all (if not the Palatine, maybe Switzerland).
Dean

Thanks for your reply . Congratualtions on your historical research . It is quite difficult to gather and verify the level of detail you have accomplished . When I origianlly started to research my family history I spent about 1 year trying to trace and link my ancestors to Johan Jacob . It was only after some professional help from a researcher with the lancaster County PA hitorical society that I was able to find out that my Greenawalt Family connections was to Abraham Grunwald and not Johan Jacob. It is one of my goals to continue my research to identify Abrahams family in Germany/Palatine. Do you have any research links or resources that you found helpful to estblish your family connctions in Germany that you are able to share?. In the future I would also like to start a National/ International Greenawalt family web site with family trees and links to Greenawalt historians that can assist younger family members with there searches to connect with their ancestors . I cuurently live outside Charlotte North Carolina but moved here from PA In 2003 . I lived in Collegeville outside of Valley Forge which gave me great access to lost of historical records . Have you applied for membership in the Son's of the American Revolution organization? I was accepted last year with my connection to Abraham Greenawalt II who fought in 1777/1778 with the lancaster County Miltia . Were you ever able to estblish any family connections between Johan Jacob and Abraham?

Your Grandmother,s notes appear to be pretty accurate as thay match the reserch I have completed on the Greenwalt family below
Greenawalt Family Ancestry

By Gregory Allen Greenawalt, Eugene Allen Greenawalt and research collaborated by Sandra Emerick Genealogist for the Lancaster County PA. Historical Society.

Historical records indicate various spellings of the Greenawalt Family name including… Grunewald, Grunewalt,Greenewald, and Greenawalt.
Abraham Grunewald was the first ancestor on record to immigrate to America on Sept 17, 1740 at age 40 years, Abraham took the Oath of Allegiance in Philadelphia. Ships records indicate that Abraham and his two young sons Christopher, and Abraham Grunewald II with his wife whose name is unknown made the trip to America on a ship named the Lydia carrying immigrants from Palentine. The Ships Commander was James Allen from Rotterdam. Abraham and is family settled in the Lancaster County. Manor Township, Millersville area.

Palentine is located in Germany along the Rhine River and included the Mannheim and Heidelberg regions and areas north of the French Alsatian border. Palentine is now known as Pfalz. The present state of Rhineland-Pfalz consists of the former Russian Rhine providence and territories including Hohenzollern. The slopes of the Palentine forest “Pfaelzer Wald” are one of Germany’s largest wine producing areas.

Many Palentine immigrants left their homeland due to Religious prosecution. In 1685 the Catholic Church felt threaten by religious beliefs of protestant groups in Palentine and waged warfare and laid siege to protestant communities. Thousands were executed and tortured. The majority of the protestants were Lutherans or Reformed Church members A new religious group was formed known as the Anabaptists who believed that people should not be baptized at birth but wait until the were old enough to learn the gospel and follow Christ’s teachings. The Anabaptists were the predecessors of today’s Mennonite Church. From 1685 -1710 a 30 year war was waged on the protestants in Palentine who were heavily taxed and persecuted by France’s King Louis XIV. In 1681 William Penn was granted a charter by the Queen of England to develop a providence in Pennsylvania as a English colony. William Penn promoted Pennsylvania as a place of religious refuge. In 1709 after an extremely severe winter when the Rhine River froze over and many died, Queen Anne of England advertised in Palentine that England would accept Germans to populate English colonies. In 1709 -1710 a mass Palentine migration took place.Thousands traveled down the Rhine river into Rotterdam in the Netherlands and on to refuge camps outside London. From here the English ships would transport the refuges to various English colonies.
Important researcher Note: Records indicate that a Johan Jacob Grunewald at age 18 years also immigrated to Philadelphia on the Ship Lydia in 1741 one year after Abraham Grunewald. Johan Jacob settled in the Bucks County area. Due to the differences in age and the fact that they settled in separate counties it is believed that Johan Jacob and Abraham were not direct family members. The families may have had connections in Germany but by the time they reached America no direct lineage has been established.
Johan Jacob’s first wife was Cathrina Fillhauer and his second wife was Dorothea Scheib.
Abraham Grunewald’s Ist , son Christopher was born in Germany 1731 and died in Manchester Township York Co Pa. between 10/5/1805 the date of his will and 11/18/1805 .

Johan Jacob settled inn the Bucks County area.
Abraham Grunewald’s Ist , son Christopher was born in Germany 1731 and died in Manchester Township York Co Pa. between 10/5/1805 date of his will 11/18/1805 .
here is sone reswearch th Greenawalt Family Ancestry

Johan Jacob settled inn the Bucks County area.
Abraham Grunewald’s Ist , son Christopher was born in Germany 1731 and died in Manchester Township York Co Pa. between 10/5/1805 date of his will 11/18/1805 . John Jacob served as a drummer in the revolutionary war 1778 in the 3rd battalion Northampton County Militia under Col. Michael Probst.
Any ancestors of Christopher or John Jacob who can establish a direct lineage are eligible for membership in the Sons or Daughters of the American Revolution .

Abraham Grunewald Ist son Abraham Grunewald II was born in German 1724 and died 5/8/1815 . Abraham II first wife was Elizabeth Knight married in 1759 and his 2nd wife was Susanna Weyland married 11/3 /1766 at the First Reform church Millersville PA. Lancaster County.

Johan Jacob settled inn the Bucks County area.
Abraham Grunewald’s Ist , son Christopher was born in Germany 1731 and died in Manchester Township York Co Pa. between 10/5/1805 date of his will 11/18/1805 .
