Ascestors of a Stewart County, TN Family

I have documentation on Paschal Greehill's descendants stating 3rd Generation. I printed this off in August 2001. the website was: www.vaughn.myokay.net/families/greenhill/greg03.htm.
This site no longer exist, does anyone know how to find this info again. I was told by dad's 1st cousin we had Greenhill's in Nashville area that made nice expensive buggies. Stewart County is somewhat close to Nashville. The info I have is extensive. With one page stating 3rd generation. He (?Greg?)undoubtedly had 2 other generations prior to Paschal. Just tring to connect some dots. Any help would be appreciated.

Connie Raye Greenhill

My brother, Kevin, had corressponded with Pete Greenhill, Jr. a few years back. I was wondering if he still had the crest. Are you still working on the Greenhill line. I have recently started looking at my line again. I started about 9 years ago and only worked on it for a year. I am from the desc that came to VA from England. Pascal's line.
Thanks,
Connie

Update

First it should be noted that the correct name is Paschal Greenhill- I have never seen Leland other than in a Hickman
family report and there was not a source for that name. I have many documents including his father's will, and lawsuits and counter suits over his brother David's will and records of Paschal being on his father's ships all with the name Paschal Greenhill.

Also, for those that are researching this family, I just discovered the proof that I was looking for to document Paschal's grandparents on his father's side. These records take us back to George Greenhill, Goldsmith born in 1630.

I am starting to work on a book about this family and their roots in London. It is a rather interesting story.

Chrisine Urban

Hi Jeanette,

No I hadn't heard of that one. From what I have seen most seem to be a transformation from the ancient english (which included some danish) for Green Hole (or Hollow) rather than Hill.

Are you saying "Grønhøj" means Greenhill? It sounds more like the northern english name of Greenhalgh, which is actually pronounced as Greenhalj or Greenholf, depending on your accent, and may also have common linguistic links with Greenhill.

Happy New Year

I have lots of information for you as I knew all Dads family, my father was Roy, he is also in the cemetery at Royston, along with his wife and son, Keith. I do not have any knowledge of Elizabeth, do you mean Violet May, born in 1907, she was known as Betty? I am in contact with her son Trevor Brown.
Do you have any information on June and Bill Penton?
I do have a lovely photograph of Bob on one of the race horses, and some wonderful memories of visiting Bob and Nans house at Winkfield Row, Warfield. Anyway it is very late and we may have lots of information to exchange, it is just so nice to have contact with an interested party, I will be in contact very soon. All the best Ruth

Hello Ruth
Well, this is all very interesting. I am not Harry & Minnie's grandson but their great grandson. My grandfather was Robert and my father is Robert (Bob) also. The Children I have for Harry and Minnie on my tree are Harry, Robert (gf), Jack, Roy and Elizabeth. I know that Harry Snr had a dairy in Royston at 1 London Road /Sun Hill and Jack lived in the house opposite but I haven't strayed off on the main tree yet. This is something that I am undertaking now as the 'dead ends' are happening more often now. Harry Snr was born on 24 Dec 1883 in Little Chishill. He married Minnie Jeanette Newell on 23 Feb 1904 in the registry at Royston. If I recall Minnie lived for a while on Melbourne Street. Harry Snr is buried in the cemetery in Melbourn Road, Royston. I'm not sure where Minnie is buried but my father did say that he thought he remembered her being buried with his grandfather but the headstone did not have any record on it, apparently due to hard times. Harry Snr was registered at birth under the name of GRENHILL as his mother Sarah, could not write and the name was pronounced as such. Took me a while to twig on that one. Oh, and his father was Joseph. Harry Snr was one of at least 10 children.
That's all for now as I have to be up early in the morning. Will look forward too hearing from you soon as this is the first time I have actually been in contact with anyone who is somehow connected.
I hope this gives you a little snippet to chew on for a while and that it also concures with some of the images and stores you have.
Kind Regards
David

Dear David
I am Harry and Minnie's grand-daughter and have, like you, been trying to find out more information on their parents. However ,I am also interested to see where you fit in to this Jig-saw, and what information you have on, Bob, Jack (John), Violet, Lena and Roy. Can you let me know who your father and grandfather are.
Any info would be gratefully received and if I have any info that you do not, please ask.
Best Wishes Ruth

Hi...I am seeking the Desaussure connection. This was my grandfather's middle name (Samuel Desaussure Stevenson) and we cannot trace the lineage. Sam was from a little village of Cleveland, Oswego County, New York, on the shores of Oneida Lake. I am told he was the namesake of an earlier Samuel, who was a Civil War Captain, but all else eludes me. Any help from your end?
Thanks so much.
Judith Stevenson
San Francisco, CA

Tim, you may be long gone, but I can answer this question. Louisa Adeline is the third child of William L. and Mary Taliarerro Greenhill. She was born Oct 23, 1844 and died in 1855. She and Martin are buried in Rock Springs Cem in Lawrence Co. AL although they lived for a time in Franklin Co. AL. She had 9 children in her 41 short years. Her siblings were Richard H., Samuel E., William Claiborne, David Ligon, Theophalus L., Rebecca S., and Alfred S. Greenhill. She may have gone by Adeline.

Becky. I don't know if I can help any but here are a few details to think about. Joseph GREENHILL was my Great Great Great Grandfather and was born in Meldreth, Cambridge, England in about 1841. He married Sarah Elizabeth BLOWS about 1861 and had several children, John 1862, Joseph J 1863, Amos 1866, Walter 1868, Frances 1871, Mary 1874, Arthur 1877, Ada 1878, George 1881, Harry 1883 (my Great Great Grandfather). I only have the tree forward for Harry and have not yet checked out Joseph Jnr(1863). These all lived near or around Royston, Cambridge, England during the 1880's. I myself live in England. Where are you and what connection are you trying to make? Dave

Greenhill Surname DNA Project

Hi,

Although not a common surname there are quite a few Greenhills scattered around the world. The original Greenhills must have come from places called Greenhill; according to multimap there are the following five places called Greenhill in Britain:-

Greenhill, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, S8 7
Greenhill, Kilkenneth, Isle of Tiree, Scotland, PA77 6
Greenhill, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, DG11 1
Greenhill, Falkirk, Bonnybridge, Stirlingshire, Scotland, FK4 2
Greenhill, Harrow, Middlesex, England, HA1 1

However, there are other small places such as Greenhill near Cambridge and Greenhill near Rickmansworth, Herts which are not listed on Multimap. Places such as Greenhill, Harrow were actually named after the landowners, who were called Greenhill, and not the other way around.

Unlike a common surname like Smith or Jones, where there are hundreds of separate families, there are probably only a dozen or so different Greenhill families.

I am very curious to find out exactly how many Greenhill families there are and which are related to which. Is there anyone else out there who is also interested? If so, I propose to set up a "Greenhill Surname DNA Project" which I will administer (unless anyone else wants to do it). Basically the science behind this is that males pass on a bit of DNA to their sons (YDNA) which changes extremely slowly over time. Hence, related males can be identified by having nearly identical YDNA. If Greenhills from different lines get tested we will be able to extablish to what extent they are all related. Further info about the science behind this can be found here:-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surname_project

In addition to this, people tested will be able to find out what Haplogroup they belong to, which, put more simply, means they will be able to find out their origins a bit further back in time, i.e, whether they are ancient Britains, Scandinavians, Eastern Europeans, etc. Most people from Britain are ancient Britain or Scandinavian (remnants of the invading Danish vikings), however, the area has seen an influx of refugees and immigrants from Europe for hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years. Some more info about Haplogroups and the two most common British ones (R1b and I1) can be found at:-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y-DNA
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haplogroup_I1a_(Y-DNA)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haplogroup_R1b_(Y-DNA)

Other potential uses that individuals might find for this project include:-

* discovering living relatives around the world
* proving or disproving theories regarding ancestry
* finding locations for further genealogical research
* validating existing research
* solving "brick walls" in genealogical research
* identifying non-Greenhills to whom you are related from before surnames were used

There are several companies that do the test but unless anyone has any better ideas I propose to use FamilyTreeDNA as I have already used them before and they give group discounts. Their website is at http://www.familytreedna.com/ and if you click on "Projects" and then on a letter you can see how many surname projects are already on the go.

A few examples of surname DNA projects are on the following sites:-

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/greenspan/index.aspx?fix...
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/h/harrison/results.htm...
http://www.harrisdna.org/results.html

Please let me know your thoughts on this. Hopefully, if a few people are interested we can get this project started and learn a bit more about our past. If you have any further questions please let me know.

Anyway, Best Wishes whatever you decide, and please pass this info on to other Greenhills :-)
