I'm looking for as many burial sites of the members of Co H, 14th Kansas Cavalry as I can find. There is information on-line that Leonard may have died in Coffeyville KS in 1921. Most of the members of this unit were living in far NE Kansas at the time of enlistment. Any help in finding this appreciated.

Alfred Greenup 1881-1962 - Stockport, Cheshire

I have come to a block in my tree at my great Grandfather Alfred Greenup 1881-1962 - He lived in Hazel Grove Stockport, Cheshire.

The family story is that Alfred did not know that he was called Greenup until the day he got married. He had been brought up being known as Bob Hewitt. As a boy He lived at 105 Banks Lane Offerton stockport and was the son of a Grocer.

When I was a small boy I remember that my Grandfather, also Alfred Greenup 1908-2003, had contact from someone who had traced their family Tree. They had linked Alfred, senior, to a family of Greenup’s in North Manchester, and onto a family from Cumbria, the origins of the name. She also had a picture of 3 men in the back garden of a house in North Manchester; one of them looked very similar to me.

This information has been lost in time but I would like to make the link again.

Any help with this would be appreciated.

Helen Greenup:

Her Father was Bernard Greenup a carter from Cornwall who came to Liverpool for the work.

He married Mary Campbell a housemaid, who moved with her employer to Liverpool from Scotland.

Helena Greenup's 1st child Minn would have to have been born in the 1890's. Her Son Barney (Bernard Jr.) would have to have been born between 1897 and 1900. He was with the BEF during WW1. He entered the Service at age 18, was gassed, but survived. He had a stall with his wife (also named Minn) at New Brighton in the 1950's.

James.
The text of your message said you were looking for William George who died ca 1712. If that was a typo and you meant William Greenup, who died ca 1712, I can tell you what is "not" known. No clue has been located which would suggest his age or date of birth. So far no one has been able to prove the ancestry of William Greenup of Prince George's Co., MD. The only clue we have of his ancestry is that he named his plantation Cumberland and we do know that the Greenup family has lived in what used to be Cumberland Co. (now Cambria)in the far north west corner of England (records in Carlisle Castle) for hundreds of years, but beyond that nothing has been proven. It seems likely William was in Calvert Co. before Prince George's was formed from the western portion of Calvert, but the few surviving records of Calvert Co. do not mention him.

Elise Greenup Jourdan

Just saw this posting. My great great grandfather was Greenup Bird. Not certain it's the same one you are making reference to but he was born in London, migrated to Richmond, VA and then moved to Kearney, MO where he became very successful. Several years later he moved to Liberty, MO and built, at the time, the largest plantatoin in MO. After the civil war the property was donated to the Presbyterian Church which built William Jewell College. The property is still known as Bird's Hill and Greenup and other family members are buried there.

Probably not the same person you are speaking of but still interesting that there are (were) two Greenup Birds.

I didn't know how Charles and my grandpa were connected so I went to the Thompkinsville city hall and they had my grandpa and grandmas marriage records including the marriage bond paper and the permission slip written on a piece of Big Chief Tablet. I have photo copies of the originals and would be glad to send them to you so I now know that Charles oldest son Greenup was my Great Grandfather and about Mary there is a message on one of the boards that talks about some of our ancestors stealing a melungion indian girl and marrying her so mabey Mary was a child of that union that married Wash Isenberg

Thanks for the info. I did not follow them further in the census as I was trying to locate those with the last name Greenup. They were no doubt just "separated" in 1900 and got back together or times were bad or conditions were such that they were living with others for unknown reasons.

Good luck with your continued research. Sorry I can be of no help. Elise

I checked my book and I have nothing on the deaths of Julia and Israel except Julia d. 20 Oct 1922. Julia was with her mother in Morrison, MN in 1900 age 55 and Israel was living in the same Motley Twp. with his sister Clara A. Bonham. I have no notation in the book that anything new has come in since publication. Israel is said to have lived in Deering, ND and moved to Oregon in 1934. Obviously, from the 1900 census, Julia and Israel broke up, so I would not expect them to be buried together. There were several Greenup families in ND in teh 1930 census. Elise

Edmond Grant Greenup was 3 years old in the census of his parents in Allamakee Co. IA in 1870; 13 in Todd Co. MN in 1880; head of his own household, age 33, in Ramsey Co., ND, Odessa Twp., in 1900 and James Gl Hendrickson was living in the household; 1920 shows he and Emma were in Rathdrum Dist.,Kootenai Co., ID where he was working as a salesman and in 1930 as a famer in Hauser Dist. of Kootenai Co. with no family but had a lodger and housekeeper in the household. I have the census records for most if not all of his siblings and a lot more info not in the last Greenup book I did. I am happy to share with you. elisejourdan@att.net

Sorry, but as a Greenup family researcher I have no information regarding settlers of Greenup County. The county and town were named for Governor Christopher Greenup, 3rd gov. of KY (1804-1808). That is the ONLY connection between the Greenup family and the county.
Good luck in your endeavour.
Elise

I think that it is possible that Joseph Greenup may be the son of Mathew and Sarah Greenup (my great grandparents). At the time of the 1901 census they lived at;
109 California,
Eston,
North Riding of Yorkshire,
England.
At that time they were aged 29 and 28 years old and had one son, George, aged 6.
Eston is very close to the border with county Durham.

I was able to find the death dates in Kootenai Co, ID for Edmond Greenup and wife, but having problems in North Dakota finding Julia (nee Greenup) Peck, wife of Israel W. Peck. Last found them 1920 census, Deering Twp., McHenry Co., ND. Was surprised to find they had an adopted son, Frank Greenup.

Also found Malinda Greenup and some of her children, living at Deering Twp, but do not find any Peck or Greenup living at Deering Twp 1930 census. Was there some kind of a migration from North Dakota?

By any chance, do you know if Israel and Julia died there and what the dates are for them, name of cemetery?

Any information you might be willing to share with me would be appreciated.
Dee
res6rhoi@verizon.net
The 1900 census for Motely, Morrison County would lead one to believe that Israel and Julia broke up even tho' both are listed as married, but that doesn't seem to be the case. They are living together, as husband and wife, in the 1910 & 1920 census Deering Twp. McHenry Co. ND. With them is daughter, Mary Peck and adopted son, Frank L. Peck.

In the 1920 census, Israel Peck is 72 and Julia is 73. Mary is 40 and Frank is 19.

So you have anything on Albert Edgar Greenup. Last I find him is in the 1900 census in Lake Twp., Cerro Gordo Co., IA. He is married to Nellie. I have been unable to find either Albert or Nellie after 1900 census.

My direct line is through Hester Greenup who married Joseph Beetem. I have been trying to track Hester's sibling.

Also on Lucy E. Greenup. Many people have Lucy's date of birth as 25 Feb 1853. But according to the cemetery records online, Lucy's dates are b. 8 March 1853 d. 8 Oct. 1867.

I do not find any Patterson connection with the Greenup family. However, fater 1820 John Greenup and wife, Jennie Malinda Cecil, left Wayne Co., KY and by 1830 were in the census of Cole Co., MO; by 1840 they were in Clark Township, Cole Co. By 1840, Christopher B. Greenup and his wife, Malinda Wray, were in Jim Henry Township of Miller Co., MO. It was not uncommon to give a son the family name of a friend or a prominent person. I have run across dozens, possibly hundreds, of men with the given name Greenup who did not appear to have any connection to the family, however, most of them were named for Gov. Christopher Greenup of KY (1750-1818)

DNA testing: Greenup and other variants of Greenhalgh

A recently aired American Public Broadcasting System documentary series has inspired me to start exploring genetic genealogy. DNA testing would seem to be a great way to confirm and sort out the relationships between the Greenhalgh surname of Lancashire and its many known and supposed variants, including Greenough, Greeno, Greenall, Greenhow, Greenhough, Greenup, Greenhalf, and many others.

I have signed up for testing myself at dnaheritage.com and established a "Greenhalgh/Greenough/Greeno Surname Project" there:

http://www.dnaheritage.com/surnameform.asp?GroupUnique=31443...

Please let me know if you are interested by contacting me at the email address above this message or through the form at the bottom of the project page at dnaheritage.com.

I also hope we can discuss the general questions people have about DNA testing in genealogy in this thread and use that in planning a strategy for testing that will maximize research value.

I will post here about how my experience with DNA Heritage goes.

Although I've found him on census in 1850 & 1860 in Missouri, I haven't been able to locate any information about him in KY. However, he named a son, Greenup Bird Patterson b 30 May 1829 in Missouri. The name also went to a grandson & great grandson. Anyone have any trees with Patterson's in it?
Sounds like your George Greenup is from the line of Stephen H. Greenup and Elizabeth Hoyt. Maybe a grandson. I know a son, Benjamin "Frank" Greenup has a son named George who was born abt 1884 in Minnesota. In 1900 this family was living in North Dakota.

Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Greenup was born in Iowa, wife, Elmira was born in Ohio. They had 9 children, George being second born.

If you or Roberta are interested, I was able to trace Edmond Grant Greenup to Idaho. Know a lot of people have him as Edward, but it should actually be Edmond. He married Emma (Hedrickson?) Both died Kootenai Co., ID

I am still working on the rest of the children of Stephen H. and Elizabeth A. (nee Hoyt) Greenup. Have some further info on Julia Ellen who married Israel W. Peck. They ended up in Deering Twp., McHenry Co, ND

Elise,
Does your book document the line of Stephen Harland Greenup, husband of Elzabeth Hoyt?

Would be very interested as I have some conflicting information on their children. Was the last child, Edmond or Edward. He is listed both ways; 1870 census it is Edward; 1880 census, he is Edmond.

I descend from daughter Hester Ann Greenup who married Joseph Beetem.
