Greenwich as a surname, multiple spellings?

Classification: Query
Surnames: Greenwich, Greenidge, GRINAGE
Many believe that Greenwich is NOT only the original spelling of Greenidge, but GRINAGE ALSO!
DOES ANYBODY OUT THERE HAVE ANY CONVINCING INFORMATION FOR THIS????
I CANNOT FIND ANYTHING THAT COMES CLOSE TO SUPPORT THE NOTION.
The spelling GRINAGE is found as early as 1769 in Va. and then it pops up in Georgia in the early 1800s.
WHERE DID GRINAGE COME FROM?
Does anybody out there have any info on the Hache~Grinage Papers that are a part of the Hartman Collection and located somewhere in La.???
I have seen GRINAGE listed as a Melungeon surname. There are plenty of mulatto Grinages and at least one GRINAGE was a slaveowner in Georgia in the early 1800's.
Anybody else interested? Any ideas? suggestions?
