Anyone on this message board have a connection to the Gregoires who came to upper New York from lower Canada? It seems those Gregoire families who came from the area around Potton, Quebec and possibly Lachine (just outside of Montreal) settled around Fort Covington, Parishville, Hogansburg, St. Regis and Oswego.

In 1840, Fort Covington, NY (near the border of Canada), Joseph Gregoire and his wife Mary (both born circa 1796 in Montreal) lived with their children. Some of their sons including Edward Gregoire and Jedediah Gregoire fought in the civil war having enlisted in Oswego, NY. Both soldiers made their way to Michigan where they lived the rest of their lives.

I've come across many other Gregoires in the upstate area. Some of these may even be the unnamed Gregoire children from the 1840 Fort Covington census.

Eloise Gregoire (also appearing as Eloyse and Alice) married Isadore (or Isidore) Courville (or Colville) in 1842 at St. Regis, NY then moved to Fort Covington by 1849 when their son, Francois Napoleon was born.

Hannah Gregoire married Joseph Beja in 1849 at Hogansburg, NY then moved to Fort Covington.

Margaret Gregoire married Baptiste Beja and lived with their children Elora (b. 1846), Jean Baptiste (b. 1851) and Mary (b. 1848) in Fort Covington.

Mary Gregoire married William Thompson in 1852 in Hogansburg, NY.

There is also an Alfred Gregoire baptized at Fort Covington in 1851 who was the son of a Joseph Gregoire and Elizabeth La(?)

Much of this information comes from a collection entitled Hogansburg: Registry of Whites and Indians. Could this mean that this family of Gregoires may have been Native American?

If you have information about the Gregoire family that lived in lower Canada and came to upper New York- or if you have ties to this family and would like further details- please respond to this message or contact me at shadolsen@hotmail.com.
