GREGOIRE Family - from Lower Canada to Upper New York

Anyone on this message board have a connection to the Gregoire (Gregware) family who came to upper New York from lower Canada? It seems those Gregoire families who came from the area around Potton, Quebec and possibly Lachine (just outside of Montreal) settled around Fort Covington, Parishville, Hogansburg, St. Regis and Oswego.

In 1840, Fort Covington, NY (near the border of Canada), Joseph Gregoire and his wife Mary (both born circa 1796 in Montreal) lived with their children. Some of their sons including Edward Gregoire and Jedediah Gregoire fought in the civil war having enlisted in Oswego, NY. Both soldiers made their way to Michigan where they lived the rest of their lives.

I've come across many other Gregoires in the upstate area. Some of these may even be the unnamed Gregoire children from the 1840 Fort Covington census.

Eloise Gregoire (also appearing as Eloyse and Alice) married Isadore (or Isidore) Courville (or Colville) in 1842 at St. Regis, NY then moved to Fort Covington by 1849 when their son, Francois Napoleon was born.

Hannah Gregoire married Joseph Beja in 1849 at Hogansburg, NY then moved to Fort Covington.

Margaret Gregoire married Baptiste Beja and lived with their children Elora (b. 1846), Jean Baptiste (b. 1851) and Mary (b. 1848) in Fort Covington.

Mary Gregoire married William Thompson in 1852 in Hogansburg, NY.

There is also an Alfred Gregoire baptized at Fort Covington in 1851 who was the son of a Joseph Gregoire and Elizabeth La(?)

Much of this information comes from a collection entitled Hogansburg: Registry of Whites and Indians. Could this mean that this family of Gregoires may have been Native American?

If you have information about the Gregoire family that lived in lower Canada and came to upper New York- or if you have ties to this family and would like further details- please respond to this message or contact me at shadolsen@hotmail.com.

Actually, the couple had 13 children.
Lafontaine did not report on 3 that were found in church records, probably because they died very young and did not contribute descendants to the family tree. The ones you don't have
(1) Marie-Lelonise, born 7 Jan. 1832 in Grondines
(2) Charles, born 13 Feb. 1833 in Grondines and baptized the same day. He died some time before Feb. 10, 1842 when the name was again given to one of their children. The second Charles married Zelie Perusse
(2) Marie-Aurelie, born 15 May 1836 in Grondines. She died before Sept. 28, 1840 when her name was re-cycled!

I have detailed notes on all 13 children, with sources noted... too long to post here. Contact me directly and I can e-mail you the notes in a Word Perfect or MS Word document.

Another tidbit of info: Joseph and Angele served as godparents to his brother Paul's son, Onesime in 1836, as well as to another brother's daughter, Exilda Gregoire in 1835 (my gr-grandfather's sister) (Source: baptism records, St. Joseph church, Deschambault, QC - digital images)

teegreg42 -at symbol- hotmail.com

Yes, we are related but on your Perrier side. Edmond Adelbert Perrier is a descendant of Pierre Perrier and, of course, you are too and so am I. I don't have any ancestors for your Jean-Baptiste Gregoire. Do you have any information on him? My great-grandmother was Flavie Gregoire. Thanks. Mary

Hello,
I saw your posting and I am a Perrier descendant. Malvina Gregoire married Edmond Perrier. Do you happen to have a record of that marriage? Prior to Edmond, Malvina was married to John Bone or at least had a child by him. This child was Emelie O. Bone, born Oct 27, 1868 in Coxsackie, New York. Do you have this marriage or Emelie's birth. She was baptised in Quebec in 1876.
Hoping you have some information on Malvina.
Thank you
Peggy G.

Thanks, Carol, for your postings in the last two years. Yes, I do have the correct parents for Elizabeth Gautron dit Larochelle, thanks. My question is, you mentioned another sibling for my gt. grandmother. Alphonse ? I can't find him under Gregoire or Casavant. You mentioned he married Julie Chapdelaine Nov 30, 1876, daughter Alexina. I'm not sure exactly where he belongs. Clarify? Thanks so very much.

I am descended from a Rene Gregoire who was married to Perrine Landron. They had a son, Rene, born about 1748. He married Marie-Anne Senecal. They had a son, Rene, who married Marie-Anne Fardet-Fortin. They had two sons, Jean-Baptiste Gregoire-Lajeunesse and Pierre. Pierre, my ancestor married Scholastique Pepin. They had several children. One of them was my great-grandmother, Flavie Gregoire. Is there anyone out there who is from this line, the Rene Gregoire line? Thanks.
Mary

Hi Don,
It's nice to see activity on the Gregoire genforum again, it had been rather quiet lately. I recently read with interest a great article about your ancestor. I found it by chance via a Google search. As Britta had made a mention of Sweden linked to the Gregoire name, he was the only possible link I could find in name and country in Swedish genealogy but not in surname which leads me to believe her ancestor is more likely one of Gregoire's from Canada. I believe it was two Du Reitz who immigrated to the USA in the 1800's.Hopefully she can give us more information.
Are you linked to the Gregoire's? Carol

I have been trying to post some information and first it wouldn't let me upload a word.doc file, then when I was in edit mode the entire message disappeared. I'm getting frustrated. I was trying to oblige the other poster who suggested I post the info here rather than send it to you direct. I hesitate posting large amounts of info, because I know there are name collectors out there. Since I have more information on the Berthelot and ancestors, I was trying to limit what I posted. I checked on "Modusa" and found out she/he is researching Gregoires from Canada. Since there is no evidence that Louis came from Canada, I figured the information would not be pertinent. Meanwhile, I will respond to you off board. I still don't understand why I didn't get an alert when you posted last month.
Not related to me, but thought this might help someone:

Jean-Charles Gregoire, 86, of Sanford, Maine, died Jan. 13, 2008, at the Goodall Hospital in Sanford, Maine after a lengthy illness. He was born in East Broughton, Quebec, Canada on Nov. 5, 1921, the son of Adonias and Yvonne (Parent) Gregoire. He was the husband of Lucienne Roy.
Go to the Portland Press Herald web site for full obit. published Jan. 16, 2008 http://www.legacy.com/mainetoday-pressherald/

A quick look-up on shows his parents were Adonias Gregoire and Georgiana-Yvonne Parent, married at St. Isidore, Nouvelle-Beauce, QC on 25 Jan. 1921.

I am a descendant of that Swedish doctor Gregorie Francois Du Rietz. He furnished his ancestry to the Swedish nobility committee, and his ancestor's surnames were Du Rietz all the way back to the year 1100. No sign of Gregorie being used as a surname either before or after him.
Louis Mathieu GREGOIRE - Louisiana

Louis Mathieu Gregoire married Genevieve Philippeau in southern Louisiana about 1779 or so. His father's name was Mathieu Gregoire. Louis was surnamed "dit Maltheis", and at least once his daughter was called "Malte". This has led me to look for Mathieu Gregoire in Malta, but I haven't had any success. Does anyone know of a Louis Gregoire migrating to southern LA in the 1770's or so?

Thanks,
Matt Sanders

Sorry Christi, I simply have been unable to find anything about Louis or Mathieu. I think if they were Acadian, I would have run across the name in my research. I have gotten some indications that Mathieu may have been from Canada, but they are only hints.

Sorry I can't be more helpful. And hello cousin.

Cheers,
Matt
Hi,
It would be very helpful if you could give us some names, dates and locations, then we could help you work backward to your ancestor. There are many Gregoire, brothers and cousins, who went to the States about 1800. Just in my tree, I count over two dozens posiibilities from various lines and generations. We have four ancestors we can connect to, three from France who arrived in the 1600's and one from Belgium, I believe, in early 1700's. They are not connected to Sweden up to the 1500's to my knowledge.
Most Gregoire changed their name for ease of pronounciation once they settled in the States,Gregor,Gregory,Grayware, etc.Gregiore is usually a typying error.
There is however a Swedish doctor,
Grégoire François Du Rietz, who was part of the Swedish nobility but he is not related to any Gregoire families in Canada. I believe some of his descendants did immigrate in the 1800's to the States. He used the name Gregoire as first name, a practice which was and still is used by the Gregoire's. By coincidence his middle name was Francois and this may be the connection to your family story as my ancestor was Francois Gregoire, of Languedoc, France was an army surgeon-barber who arrived in 1667. If you want to contact me directly, I'll be pleased to help if I can, cgregoire@sprint.ca
