Charles Richard Gregory - Possible Remitance Man
I am looking for information on my Grandfather, Charles Richard Gregory. Family stories are that he was a "Remitance Man" He was born 17 Dec 1854, he told my grandmother, Julia Bower Gregory, that he was born in Texas, but from letters he wrote, phrases he used were British (English) sounding. He shows up in Sacramento, California about 1888 on Voters lists and is living with a Doctor on G Street between 10th and 11th Streets. 1n 1889 he is listed in Sacramento Business Directory as an Upholsterer on 8th Street. He also worked for Bell and Greer's Auctioneers in Sacramento on J Street. On 7 Feb 1890 he married Julia Rose Bower, also in Sacramento. They had children:
1. Anna Dorothy Gregory, born Nov 1890 married Francis Marion Smith. Annie lived at Point Richmond California and has 2 sons, Richard and Francis (Frankie) then we loose track of them.
2. Charles Richard Gregory Jr, died as a baby from fever.
3. Julia Frances Gregory, died as a baby from fever from Measles
4. William Smith Gregory, lived through Measles, only to die at 2 years old from Membraneous Croup, later called Diptheria.
5. Carmen Sylva Gregory married Burton Chambers and had 2 sons, Burton and Howard. Carmen and sons lived with Julia in Bandon, Coos Co. Oregon
6. Julian Gregory, my Father, born Oct 29 1901 in Oakland California, As a Boy, he lived in Bandon with Julia and her 2nd husband AB McNitt, and later in Salem, Marion Co. Oregon. He married Goldie Catherine Chamberlin and had 4 children, of which I am one.
In Oakland California, Charlie went away in June 1901, before my Father was born. Julia noted this in the margin of their Account book. We don't even know if he knew about his son that lived. He was despondent over the deaths of his 3 children, and drank a bit, possibly causing the break up of the marriage.

I'd love to find info on Charlie. I have been looking for 20 years off and on, but can find nothing. I thought we had found him in Islington, London, England...right dates and everything...but then I found a death certificate for that Charles Richard Gregory. So disappointing...I am turning 84 next year and I hope to find something SOON!

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Dorothy
Hello,
I'm not sure if you're still looking at this thread (14 years ago?). My goodness. But I'm trying to find the parents of Thomas Gregory. I currently have down that it is James Thomas Gregory and Patience Godwin. But after some research (see http://international.loc.gov/master/gdc/scdser01/200401/book...) I don't think I have the correct parents.

Thanks!
I was wondering if you had any descendants of this line that have YDNA tested. If not, I would encourage you to do so. I would bet that some of the lines already tested will tie in with your information, which would be a huge help. There are several companies that do YDNA testing and I am the coordinator for the GREGORY DNA Project on FamilyTreeDNA. Please check out our information at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/GREGORYDNAProject or contact me. Even if you test with a different company, there are ways to join this project and/or upload your DNA results to sites that can compare multiple testing platform results.

Candace Gregory
firegrl@sierratel.com

I have a family tree with 406 Gregory's names from four different sources. The majority are connected to Thomas Cross Gregory 1745 - Oct 1829 who died Gwithian Cornwall. On your branch I have Frederick Cecil Gregory 2 Nov 1896 - 13 Jan 1982. Father Richard Frederick Gregory 27 May 1873, his father Richard Thomas Gregory 1844 - 1924, His father Richard Nicholas Gregory 1815 1- 1877, his father Thomas Gregory 1779 - 1859 and his father the said Thomas Cross Gregory 1745 - Oct 1829. I have joined thousands of names to Thomas Cross Gregory, work still in progress.
Kind regards

Elizabeth Lewis nee Gregory

I am interested in learning about their children. Hope to hear from you- thanks!

Hello Ian,
which William Walter Gregory was your 2nd cousin 2x removed? Are you speaking of William b 1890?
I would love to learn more of the Gregory's still in Essex! My Grand parents immigrated to the USA in 1925. As far as I know it was the only part of the line that did.
And of course more on William.
My research has never stopped, I just have not been on the message boards in a long long time.

You may contact me directly
bsandts@msn.com
Hope to hear from you.
Beth Snell
I am also at that point, I do not have anything after the Gregory Brothers. Kerry, Charles, John, Albert, and Lee. Kerry is Cary William Gregory's father according to a written account by Elbert Charles Gregory, who's father is John T Gregory, who's father is Cary William Gregory. I keep seeing the name Hiram, but I don't have anything to tie it to. Everything I have states Kerry, not Hiram as Cary William Gregory's father. Any help would be appreciated.

Van Gorder Family Tree
Tracy Van Gorder Schweighardt

The written story I have from my Grandmother's Uncle, Elbert Charles Gregory, Grandson of Cary William Gregory and Phoebe Phelps, is that it was Cary's second wife Alabama McCoy that was Native American. Phoebe died in 1882 and Cary married Alabama McCoy in 1883. Cary had 13 children with Phoebe and 6 more with "Bammer" as they called her. Elbert or Uncle Greg as my Grandmother knew him, did state that in about 1801 they moved from Oklahoma to Arkansas where his Uncle Dass Carter had a Saw Mill.

I have copies of Cary and Alabama McCoy's Marriage certificate and the military Pension application Alabama McCoy completed to receive benefits upon Cary's death. They are posted in my Family Tree - Van Gorder Family Tree.
