Re: GREMILLION's of Avoyelles In The 1850 Census

Based on information from the book "Some Early Families of Avoyelles Parish" by William Nelson Gremillion, Sr. and Loucille Edwards Gremillion and subsequent review, I believe the following to be true.

Based on the names you mentioned, it appears as though you are referring to the family of Francois Louis Gremillion. His children Francois II, Eugenie, Constance, Amelia, Marie Manette, Euphrosine, Cyprien, and Martin are directly referenced. After the death of Francois, on December 15, 1815 his widow Perrine Berza purchased property with her son Francois II purchasing additional property adjacent to that. In 1816, Euphrosine and her husband purchased additional property adjacent to the others. Again in 1818, Francois II purchased additional property that eventually was owned by his brother Martin.

The property was just beyond Coulee des Grues on what is now the Hessmer-Marksville highway. The property became known as "Les Cotes des Gremillion". In the 1980's, when the book was published, Sylman Gremillion and his wife lived on the property.

Most of the Gremillions that you name lived in the Cottonport, Longbridge area. Many of them are buried in the cemetery behind St. Mary's Assumption Church in Cottonport, LA. I am Richard Gremillion, son of Gordon Charles, son of Alfred Edward, son of Arthur Siezieme, son of Maruielle Siezieme, son of Francois.

Hi,
Gallbladder surgery is not fun. Hope you get better fast. Had knee replacement surgery and what saved me were the pain pills.
I asked if you were related to the Gremillion's because you apparently were reading a Gremillion message board. I also thought we might be distant cousins.

Take your time and get well. Have a great holiday.
Patricia

The lines I'm working on are mostly French. My father was Polish. The French surnames include Rabalais, Gremillion, Lacour, Lemoine, Bordelon, Bouchard, Berza, Roy,Plauche and more. I have been able to go back as far as 1600 to France and Germany, with the help of all the data posted by my distant cousins, people I don't know, who put their research on ancestry.com and rootsweb. I am trying to verify all that I can so it just isn't a repeat of what is on the web. Anyway, it was a place to start. Once again I thank you for your help, time and interest. One more question, do you have a Gremillion ancestor?
Patricia

Re: Louisiana Catholic Convent Boarding Schools

It was around 1930 when my mother-in-law was sent to the convent - she was 4 years old. Her mother and father divorced - never did quite understand why her mother didn't keep her. Her father remarried - either wife # 2 or #3, but she didn't have any children and of course wanted one - so she got her out of boarding school. I had always heard the story of her going, but like you, failed to inquire. Had been working on various lines in my family and my ex's paternal lines, but never much on hers. When my former father-in-law died, my eldest daughter got some of his papers from his present wife and from his law office. She got me back on the track of researching that line. What lines are you working on? Mine are numerous - have 3 Smith lines, Perkins, Brown, Hunter, Miller, Kennedy, Townsend, Scroggins, Wullschleger, Phinney and even all the way back to Pocahomtas ... the Townsends back to Renpentance Townsend; the Hunters back to England. If I can help in any way, please let me know.

Hi, Jimmy!
I am your cousin from Hamburg, LA. Your grandfather and my grandfather, Ulysses Bordelon, were half-brothers. I just got a note from your cousin Patricia. She said you all had traded some info. E-mail me at opb@kricket.net, and maybe we can compare notes. I am just starting on the Gremillion side of my family also.
Arlene

After hours of research, I finally found the school - Academy of the Sacred Heart, Grand Coteau, Louisana...near Sunset which is near Lafayette. There is even a "Miracle" and a "Shrine" located there. Quite interesting. Hope that this has been of some assistance to you.

I am James Gerard Gremillion
My father John Leonard Gremillion
HIs father Osma Hyacyinth Gremillion

What do I do now. I have had 2 different Gremillion surname searches done and both were similar. One said that the gremillions came essitially before France from Germany or Italy. The other was a little more specific and said the first recorded surname of Gremillion or similar was in the 1140-1400's in Cemona, Province of Northern Italy.

I am lost and don't know how to go backwards to proove or disproove these things. Do I tell my kids to say Ciao Bella, We We or Danka? Anyway I would appriciate any help and guidence here in the beginning.

thanks

Jimmy

Trying to find a first name for a gentleman that was a bus
driver in Louisiana with last name Gremillion. He would have
been born around 1909 or 1910. He had a couple of daughters
and a son. His son would have been born around the middle
1950's and I believe that one of his daughters may have been
Martha Gremillion. If anyone has this family in their family
line please let me know. Best Regards, Patricia
One of his daughters was born in the late 1940's

Thank you. My grandmother went to the boarding school but I believe it was her choice. Grandma was very religious. I did find one of the schools in the census on ancestry, but she was not listed. I posted this message a long time ago. . .and now can't remember which census. I will have to revisit the census. I called the archdiocese about this back then and they told me the records were spread out in all the churches in Louisiana. I appreciate any information at least then I will have a place to start the search.
Thank you
