Delighted to find,on first visit to,messages regarding Grenfell.I appear to be distantly related, and am proud possessor(somewhere in storage) of a copy of his autobiography,(The Life of A Labrador Doctor-one of an Edwardian series of 'Great Lives')with an enscription to my mother reading "To Deborah Eileen Parsons-cousin of Dr Grenfell, from Norah Moody." MoodySankey, of evangelist fame, inspired Sir Wilfred in his London Hospital days when he visited one of their prayer meetings. He was then, as he wrote "under the tutelage of the great Sir Frederick Treves-the doyen of teachers" and the extra-ordinary thing was that I knew nothing of this connection until I visited my dying mother in England the day after I was cast as an actor to play Treves in a production of The Elephant Man in Florida. She had the book by her bed and asked me to read parts of it.On reading the inscription then the passages about Treves Sir Wilfreds late night encounters in the dark quadrangle with 'The Elephant Man' - my hair stood on end. My mother gave me the book and after she passed on a few days later,I flew back began rehearsals in New York. We broke for Xmas I went to visit an uncle in upper Vermont, who took me, by further co-incidence to dinner at the Dog Sled Inn founded by Sir Wilfred and his American wife and where they settled in late life after their great years of service to the poor and sick and orphans of Labrador.Still being sold under the new management at that time (1980)were photo copies of old tin-types of the Labrador adventures struggles. My uncle sent me a cutting a few years back from a Vermont newspaper noting the passing of the last gentleman who worked with Grenfell there and who took over the running of the childrens camp school there that bore the Grenfell name.Enough from me,would love to hear more from above Grenfell enthusiasts connecteds, meanwhile I'll dig out the book again.Best to you all.
