Neil was my uncle, my father's brother, no doubt he told you a bit about Granny Rump, she was a character. I have searched Cornwall for details of the Rump estate and title. "The Rumps" are an outcrop of rocks on the Cornish coast..l cannot find any Rump (surname) on any lists... found Grenfells though they also held title. Wonder if the Rump name was taken when they left Cornwall. Quite a number of immagrants took names from their home towns when they began new lives.
I would love to catch up with you some time. I will contact you off the board.
Anne

Hello Maria,
I believe William Grenfell my great grandfather married Cicely Charlotte Karen - Happuch Rump my great grandmother. Her daughter Amelia Sabina Grenfell married William Nicholas Columbus. One of their 8 sons is my father Ian Barnard Columbus. Barnard is a family name as Amelias brother John was John Barnard Grenfell, who died at 23 in WW2. John lived with my father and his family as Cicely died soon after his birth and Nana helped raise him. My father remembers him affectionately. In September a ceremony in Christchurch will remember him, my father and several of his brothers are to be present. (l note there is also an Alfred Barnard Rump- prossibly Cicely's brother).
I have a photo of Cicelys parents who I am told came from Cornwall.Granny Rump is remembered by my father.I am a bit confused about their history- though I do have a photo of Cicely's parents and a blue glass bowl that belonged to them. l also have a broach that was Cicelys -she scatched her name on the back of it- it was given to me by my grandmother Amelia (Millie). I believe Cicely's mother was a maid on the Rump Estate in Cornwall and left with John(?) Rump - an only son for New Zealand after he embarasshed his family by wanting to marry her. My aunty has a photo of him at the time of his death surrounded by family members.
I would love to be able tp piece the Rump family history together- you probably have a lot more information than I do, I would welcome a contact from you. My partner and I will be in Cornwall in September. I hope to find some record of the family over there
Anne

Hi Sarah,
I saw your June 25, 2003 posting. Dr. Wilfred Thomason Grenfell was my grandfather. I have been desperately trying to link my line of Grenfells with the American line of Grenfells but it's really difficult. My godmother (who was supposedly a distant family cousin) was Frances Trembath. She was single and nobody seems to list her in their Trembath genealogy. The Jane Trembath Grenfell you mention, married to Peter Hoskins, was my 4th cousin three times removed. The very fact that we share ancestors means that we may be able to connect our trees. I would LOVE to share information with you. First of all could you please give me the descendancy from Jane Trembath Grenfell to you? I'm so excited about this. Do you live in the US? I do. REALLY looking forward to hearing from you.

You mention that you are the grandson of Elizabeth, who was a cousin of WIlfred Grenfell. I also saw that that Thomas Shugg Grenfell seems to be in your line. Wilfred Grenfell was my grandfather (his daughter Rosamond was my mother) and I have been trying for years to fit our line into some of the other Grenfell lines that originated in Cornwall. Can you give me more information on your Elizabeth and how she is related to Wilfred? Thanks.

Hi Ken,

Your Grandfather, Percival Grenfell appears on my family tree as do his parents, John Grenfell and Jane McIntosh. However John's parents were not John Grenfell & Elizabeth Veale. They were John Grenfell & Sarah Hoskins. Sarah was John's second wife but it would appear that she died and John married for the third time to Susannah Hicks (nee Carbis). Your great grandfather came to Australia with Susannah and seven other children. They arrived in Melbourne in January 1868 aboard the "Southern Cross". One of the other children, James Grenfell is my Great Grandfather. If you want more details contact me on dennisue@eisa.net.au
Grenfell, Tassone, Schaefer, Iba connection

I am trying to fine members of the Jack Grenfell II family. He married Linda Tassone in August 1965 in Brooklyn, NY. Linda's mother, Audrey, and my mother were cousins. Audrey married Joseph Tassone and had Linda, Joseph, and Thomas. Audrey was the daughter of Eugene (Hans) Schaefer and Alice. Eugene was the son of Eugene and Martha Schaefer (Nee Iba), my ggrandparents. I am most anxious to have any information or photos of any of this family.

Thanks, Dee

Grenfell Family

Hi Judy,
I have a William Grenfell b:Oct 1887 in Colorado. I haven't been able to connect where he came from. The only thing I have is his mother is Charlotte Spires b:Oct. 12, 1868 West Bromwich,(Birmingham)England. She married Thomas Henry Oliver in Lousiana in 1890 and their first child was born Sept. 5, 1891. He is listed in the Oliver family tree under Thomas and Charlotte as first born before the first Oliver son was born. I assumed that she had probably been married before. William married a Minnie ??? and their children's name were Charles, Richard, William, Jr. This is all I have that was given to me by the Oliver family. Would you please e-mail me directly to see if we have a connection. swspades@worldnet.att.net

Thank you
Karen Spades

My Grenfell connection

My great-grandmother was Jane Trembath Grenfell who married Peter Hoskins and came to Dodgeville, Wisconsin. Jane was the daughter of Pascoe and Janie Trembath Grenfell; Pascoe was the son of John and Catherine Grenfell of St. Juste. In 1933, my aunt (Dr. May Davies) contacted Dr. Wilfred Grenfell to ask if they might be related. In his interesting and gracious reply dated Jan. 27, 1933, Dr. Grenfell said that he was a direct descendant of Sir Richard Grenville of Tennyson's Revenge. He referred my aunt to a Miss N. Grenfell, a "distant kinswoman," living in Penzance and wrote further of the "large Grenfell clan.". This letter is a precious possession and I will send a copy to anyone who so requests.

Sarah Davies Hogoboom
Hi Rudi:

It has been a while since you posted your message, hope you will see this. What a familiar place Camborne is to me. My father's family, the Davies, were from there. They came to Dodgeville, Wisc. USA in the 1840's and mined there. I visited Camborne and Redruth in 1984. My father's cousins did a rather complete genealogy, so don't need help in that way. Just wanted to contact a Camborne resident.

Sarah Hogoboom
Madison WI

Hi I am searching for information on John GRENFELL who married Ann (nee HARVEY) in December 1876. As far as I can tell, they had one son John Harvey GRENFELL before emmigrating to New Zealand, possibly via Australia. I have been unable to find out if John Mitchell GRENFELL had any brothers or sisters, or if any others of his family also came out to nz. Other children born to John and Ann in NZ are as follows;
Nicholas James bC1879 in Christchurch
Thomas bC1880 in Oxford nz
William b1881 in Oxford nz
Sabina Ann b 20 july 1882 Oxford nz

If anyone can help to expand the Uk connection or information on which ship they sailed out on I would be greatfull.
I have found a fair bit of information about the family recently, both Rump and Grenfell. I spoke to Neil about 16 or 17 years ago, very early on in my search and sadly Neil has now passed away.
Cheers
Maria
