Re: Wanted: Jean GREY, married to Andrew MASON , Scotland > PA, USA in 1822

Hi

According to IGI http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?P...

Jean married Andrew in Ayrshire in 1815. There are 2 records for this - one in Galston in 1815 and one in Loudoun. Both these records are patronb submitted and should be viewd with slight suspicion. The best place to check is on Scotland's People http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ which is the collection of Scotland's records on the net. It is hoever pay per view but you do have a county and year so it shouldn't be too difficult to find. Since these are from the Old Parish Registers (OPR's) there may be no more information to be found than which parish they lived in

IGI (again patron subs) has the following

ISOBEL MASON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 06 NOV 1819

6. ISOBEL MASON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 14 NOV 1819 Galston, Ayr, Scotland

7. ISOBEL MASON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 18 NOV 1819

8. ISOBEL MASON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 21 NOV 1819 Galston, Ayr, Scotland

9. MARTHA MASON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 18 APR 1816

10. MARTHA MASON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 12 MAY 1816 Loudoun, Ayr, Scotland

11. HUGH MASON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 14 OCT 1817 Loudoun, Ayr, Scotland

Again this might be worth following up on Scotlands People if you wish

HTH

Fiona

My grandmothers maiden last name was Melott (Mellott) this family is from Ohio as well, the estern part.
James Grey married Sarah Cross in Wincanton c1880?

Searching for anyone with any knowledge of this part of my family. Winifred Jessie Grey was the resuling offspring (my great grandmother) and I have the birth certificate, but can find little information about James. I have Sarah and her family. There seems to have been some complications, Jessie (as she was known) was brought up in London and eventually became a Harden, we think she was raised by relatives but again can't find a trace pre her marriage.

Just wanted to add that if you search for the 1910 census you have to search on FUNES rather than FINES to find them.

Also on the 1920 census Edward Grey is also listed with Alice and Frank FINES in Richmond, VA and he is 18 years old and it says "adopted son".

In neither entry does it say Edward GREY but it does say Edward Grey in the obit for his mother Alice FINES.

Edward Grey from VA in Philadelphia

Looking for any information on Edward GREY who was born in Virginia about 1902. He shows up on the 1910 census as 8 years old living with frank & Alice FINES in Richmond, VA. He is listed as their son but I know he was actually their adopted child. I do not know if it was a family adoption or whether he was an unrelated orphan. I know that as an adult he moved to Philadelphia, PA and was married. In 1961 (when his mother Alice died) he was still living in Philadelphia.

Does ANYONE have any info on this man? Is there a list somewhere that could show me how many Edward Greys were living in Philadelphia in 1961? I'd love to connect with living ancestors.
Thx,
Monica

My great great grandfather was a Thomas Gray. He emigrated from Ireland and possibly changed the spelling of his name to Gray. He married a woman of English descent, her name was Mary Ashworth. They had 4 children.Their eldest, Thomas Grey became a NYC police sergeant, Joseph and John Grey were orphaned and ended up as farm laborers in Indiana, and the youngest, Sarah Jane apparently died at 2 years old.
Does anybody know how to go back to Ireland and find records on those who left for America?

Re: what about my surname

Stephan, The name Grey comes from the Viking raider Rollo de Croy in Normandy France in 978. There were various names because inconsistent spelling was only developing at that time - de Groy, de Grai, de Grey, de Gray, de Gracci. The first Greys in Britain, from Henry de Grey 1085 continued with de Grey until the late 1300s. For some reason, the family members who moved to Scotland became Gray.
I obtained this information from Norman Grey's posting during my research of Henry Gray who settled in Fairfield, CT in 1630. Norman Grey obtained a scroll of the history of the Grey name purchased on the net from Ancestry.com so perhaps you can do so also.
Good luck with your research.
Pat
