David Greer did the DNA testing and so did Brown Grier and we are in this Greer/Grier line that has the Viking connection. Our line is James 1708, James 1738, Alexander 178?, John M. 1804 who went to MS and AR.

James 1738 b. Antrim Co was a brother to Thomas and an Uncle to James (Jimmy), son of John who stayed in Ireland.

I was told that all these Greers came to America at the same time. James & Margaret, Thomas, James, Jimmy, Mary and
another sister (Margaret or Martha). Do you have any info from Ireland?

Griers of Philadelphia
I am looking for information regarding the family of David Grier. David married Jane Culbert. Although David's origin and dates are unknown, we do know quite a bit about Jane. Jane was the daughter of James and Esther Culbert. She was from County Donegal, Ireland and born around 1774. We know she emigrated from Ireland sometime before 1836, probably before 1830. We know she settled in Philadelphia with David. It is unknown whether David was born in Ireland or the US. We also do not know where or when David and Jane were married, or where/when their children were born.

David died sometime before 1850. We know that Jane died April 15, 1854, in Philadelphia and was buried at the Machpelah Burial Grounds. She had a brother, James Culbert, who married Elizabeth Park, and settled in Balleighan, County Donegal, Ireland. James Culbert died in February 1833. James' oldest child, Matthew, immigrated to the US around 1830 and settled in Alabama. In 1836, James' daughter, Esther Jane Culbert, immigrated to Philadelphia along with brother, James Jr., and cousin, Robert Culbert. Esther Jane Culbert lived for several years with "Aunt Jane Grier".

The letters that Esther Jane Culbert wrote to her family suggests that David and Jane Grier had at least two sons, Samuel Grier (who asks Mathew if there are any pretty girls in Alabama) and John Grier, who is a grocer. Esther Jane further instructs the family to write to her in care of John Grier, Grocer on Market Street North Side. The last letter was dated in May 1842.

In 1841, being the industrious girl she was, Esther Jane Culbert managed to save up enough money to have her entire family in Ireland come to Philadelphia - including: widowed mother Elizabeth, brother Andrew, sister Nancy, brother Joseph (who drowned on the trip over), sister Elizabeth and sister Catherine. Mother, Andrew and Catherine, would later return to Balleighan, while Nancy and Elizabeth remained with "Aunt Jane Grier" in Philadelphia.

Any assistant would be appreciated.

Hello,
I don't know if you're still searching, or where your Griers were from, but I connect to a Grier famly from NC that went to West TN pre-civil war. They were in bondage to the Grier family, and after the Civil War, stayed in TN and many took the GRier name. Others in the family, who were living under different families took that family's name, or chose a new one altogether. Many of these Griers stayed in and around Madison co Tn. and descendants are there still. The family member I connect to was Tom PERSON, but he had been on the Grier plantation until the owner's death. If you think any of this is helpful to you, let me know.
Email: Nancynoel13@gmail.com

I don't have a strong connection, but I have a very similar verbal history. My grandfather was Rev.Dr. Charles P. Grier, born 23 Oct 1906 in Dora Lake, MN (He died in Dec. 2006). His mother was Addie and his father was John S. Grier.

His grandfather was Willie Grier (I have no idea if his name was really William). His parents were supposedly doctors, one was a dentist. They were prodistants living in Northern Ireland and were killed by being thrown under a train. Willie & His brother were sent to Canada as indentured servants to a carpenter. My Grandfather was the first of our line born in the US.

If you have any link to us, please let me know as well! (everrebel@yahoo.com). My name is John M. Grier, Jr.

After re-reading my post it is out of time line. Try again.
Robert Grier was the second husband of Jeanie.
Born Jeanie McMurry, married Andrew Burns. He died and she married Robert.

An excerpt from a paper by a descendant of Robert given to me by Calvin Grier of this list. He probably knows who is making the statements.
"My genealogical ground re my mother's line of Griers gets very uncertain when I attempt to go back earlier than Robert Grier (son of Robert b. abt 1730)and his wife Margaret Livingston, and I am unsure as to whether the following genealogical information is accurate. However I am inclined to give it credence.
Although I have not seen the book myself, I have read that according to the book "Pioneer Families of Georgia", in the Rare Books Library at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga, a Robert Grier was married in Scotland to Jeanie Burns, a Roman Catholic and the widow of Andrew Burns. It is reported that her family had her imprisoned on a trumped up charge in order to keep her from marrying the hated Covenanter, but he married her anyway--in the jail. (This incident should not be confused with the case of John Harris and Eleanor Reynolds, who were married in a jail also, the Monaghan Jail in Ireland, by the Rev. Thomas Clark, M.D. of Ballybay, Ireland, because Dr. Clark had been imprisoned on religious ground.) I do not know the birth dates of either Robert or his wife Jeanie. Although I am not certain of it, I believe that Jeanie died in 1796 and Robert in 1801 both in Georgia.

According to the aforementioned "{Pioneer Families of Georgia" all of the children born to Robert and Jeanie Grier were born in America"

He then lists the children of Robert b. 1755 and Margaret Livingston, a cousin of his mother, Jeanie.

In an interview with a grandson of Robert1 he referrs to his grandmother as Elizabeth
Thus, until it can be carved in stone some of us are left with Elizabeth Catherine McMurry Burns. AKA Jeanie.
Moses Grier son of Robert Grier and Elizabeth/Catherine b. 01 Mar 1758 Muddy Creek York County, PA d. Autauga Cty, AL 11 Aug 1837. He married Martha Hayes.

In my records Thomas Grier, brother of above, b.
My records show Robert m. Elizabeth Catherine McMurry
then she married Burns and third Robert Grier.
She had some children with Burns but I did not make record of them.
It is believed that Elizabeth was called "Jeanie". Her death date varies as 1776 or 1796
I don't think anything so far is absolute this lady.

Mostly, however, I want to find out about his wife Charlotte, formerly Simmons previously Perolz, nee Graham, as John was her third husband and I am descended from her first marriage

The Griers' and Ivies' are all my relatives. You can find them in Habersham County, in North Ga. Cornelia and Clarkesville are the towns. There is a book in the library in Clarkesville on the family. Wade Hampton and Louella Grier are direct realatives. My Grandfather was Thomas Rucker Ivie, his wife was Cynthia Herrin. Louella was my great aunt I believe. Look in Cornelia GA The spelling is Ivie, not Ivey. There are direct relatives in Murphy NC and one of the children was named Grier Ivie.

All in Buck and Chester County PA.
Seems likely to be a maiden name of previous generation - might also be from the Rev.
I wonder if we're related. My Russells came from County Down, some from Antrim. Originally Scotland. Lots of Davids, Johns, Williams, Andrews. I know they had relatives over here when they came in June of 1851, and I know they didn't come as a result of the famine. They landed in New York on the HERCULES, then show up in New York State before moving through Indiana on their way to Preston, MN. (Close to the Iowa border.)
