Allan,
My post was not clear. It was meant as a reply to sfchud-1 on Oct 3. Your explanation contains more information for her though. I am in search of Griffin males from Union or Anson Counties NC to take a DNA test. The FTDNA Griffin project needs Griffin men known to descend from either Thomas Griffin who came from Essex Co VA to Anson Co. NC after the Rev War or from David Griffin who may have been Thomas's brother. With the new price until Dec 31 of $119 for a 37 marker test the time is ideal to join the project. We have a matching group for Uriah ,1807, Jeremiah, 1796, Jackson A , 1812, and Lewis 1803.
Billie

Billie, If I understand your question correctly, yes any male named Griffin on your husband's Griffin line would be fine - as long of course as he is not an adopted child. It is always best to find two on the line who branched as far up the line from the Earliest known ancestor (EKA) - preferably a descendant from the EKA's brother or a different son than the one your husband descends from if you really want to nail down the DNA for that EKA. If both match then you've ruled out trysts between a Griffin wife on the line with a non-Griffin male and have ruled out a hidden adoption. Incidentally there are more Griffin men in the study than Griffith's or other spelling variations. - Allan Griffith, Bloomington, IL - magrif@verizon.net

Loretta, I have copied a paragraph from one of your postings below:

"I have more info if needed on this family.
This is the Same family of Silas Griffin who was married to Adeline Griffin--as they named their children after Silas' siblings and uncles--and in the 1900 Census Silas' step mother Sarah was living with him and his wife as she was then a widow."

Question: Will you go to the Madisonville, Madison County, Texas genealogy website and look at a picture at an old Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
http://www.txgenweb4.org/txmadison/fs_griffin.html

My Mother that was born in Madisonville, Texas told me many years ago that the parents of James Noah Griffin came to Madisonville to visit him. His parents were John Griffin and his step-mother was Sarah Sally Crutchfield Griffin. We think (no proof) that the above it the grave for me and that they perhaps died in Madisonville. The Primitive Baptist Church is next to the small cemetery and is likely the church some of the the Madisonville Griffins attended. I know that my great-grandmother, Frances J. (Hale) Griffin, wife of James Noah Griffin, was a Primitive Baptist. I gave her old book about her church to my sister after the death of our mother, Lella Otis (Griffin) Brown. After Hale Noah Griffin and Mexie (Mathis) Griffin, my mother Lella, and James Noah Griffin and his wife Frances J. (Hale) Griffin moved to central west Texas, Coleman, to escape the mosquitoes in Madison County, my mother Lella went with her grandmother on the train from Coleman to near Abilene to attend church services at a Primitive Baptist Church.

I have seen that you have Sarah (Crutchfield) Griffin as dieing in Florida. Do you have a cemetery and grave site and/or possibly a picture? I do so hope that you do.

I have copied all of your message and sent to my brother that is retired from the Oil Patch and lives in New Zealand. Dan is the one that introduced me to genealogy. Before he retired, he had a woman in Texas that did much of his family research via snail mail to the Far East.

Best regards,
Doris (Brown) Buhr
Retired Texas elementary school teacher and school librarian
221 N.
Dubhr,

Every little bit helps build the Tree! I have John Griffin born about 1809 NC, and his three wives: Elizabeth ?, Frances Dixon, and Sarah Crutchfield. John married Frances Dixon, 4 Jan 1838,Thomas Co,GA. Based on the marriage date, and the birth of James Noah Griffin, 18 Sep 1845, Frances would be his mother? John married Elizabeth, 27 Dec 1831,Thomas Co,GA. I have them with four children. I have John and Frances Dixon with five children. I do not have John and Sarah with any children. griway at knology dot net

Lisa, I have not heard from you or seen postings in recent years. Are you still out there? I am a Griffin descendant, My John Griffin married his last wife Sarah/Sally/Sallie Crutchfield. I think they died in Madisonville, Texas. There is a wooden grave marker in an old Primitive Baptist Church that says Johnny Griffin Sarah Griffin. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txmadiso/Fellowship.txt
http://www.txgenweb4.org/txmadison/fs_griffin.html -- picture of the homemade wooden marker. I'm guessing that some nice person in the church made the marker a long time ago. I think this is the son of Lewis Griffin and Martha (Boyette) Griffin. Sarah Crutchfield was John Griffin's 3rd wife. I am descended from John Griffin and I think, Elizabeth. thru their son James Noah Griffin and Francis J. "Fanny" (Hale) Griffin that both lived in Madisonville, Texas in the 1880s. James Noah Griffin and his wife Frances J. (Hale) Griffin migrated from Thomasville, GA to Madison County, TX after the end of the Civil War. The children of his brother John Griffin eventually migrated from Georgia to live with them -- Henry, William, Clementine, and Lenorah. Some of these young people can be found on the marriage records at the Madison County Texas genealogy website.

Yes to your questions. We did find a 25 marker match. Griffins we knew nothing about. Waiting for the rest of our test results to come back to see if we are still a match at 35 markers. Also, match 3 others that only did 12 marker tests, but still worth looking into.

Does anyone have information on Nancy or Martha Griffin from Tennessee. They later moved to Port Gibson, Mississippi. Nancy Griffin married John Rundell and Martha Griffin married Ezra Rundell in 1818. Both men were descendents of Seth and Elizabeth Rundell. Ezra and Martha later moved to Madison Parish, Louisiana and I believe both died in Madison Parish.

New website re Pengruffwnd/Pengriffin/Griffin/Griffith

As promised last April, I have uploaded eleven years of work on the Pengruffwnd/Pengriffin and Edward Griffith/Griffiths/Griffithes/Griffin of Flushing families to my new Rootsweb site.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~theresagri...

Here you'll find information on the deaths and wills of Johan [John] Pengruffwnd, and his sons, Edward and John who were enumerated in Lewys Dwynn's 1613 Visitation of Walton West, Pembrokeshire, Wales, as well as documented evidence which either supports or refutes previously published Griffin family histories, including proof that Edward Edward and Sgt. John Griffin of Simsbury, CT did not share a common blood relative within 10,000 years!

You'll also find a link to Paul Jennings Griffin's new Rootsweb website which includes his Annotated Bibliography and Griffin Family Tree which was offline for about six months.

Please stop by and drop me a line. I look forward to your comments.

Theresa Griffin

Griffins of GA, Alabama and Texas

Seeking any information on the family of Benjamin Griffin b: abt 1772, Halifax Cty, VA married Mary Polly Byrd/Bird born 1772 in Virginia. They are buried in Griffin Cemetery in Bibb Cty Alabama. Some sites state that they were involved in the Fort Mims massacre and that a son Walt Griffin died there but I am not finding him on the list of white settlers dead or military dead. So, I am not ruling out the possibility that Walt was among the Indian dead (that this family is mixed Creek + Irish/Welsh) and thus not identified. Benjamin's son David A. Griffin married Mary B. Mahan and went to Texas after 1856 and before 1860 where they are enumerated on the 1860 Rusk Cty, Texas census. Their (David and Mary Mahan's) adult son Oen (Owen)David Griffin married Catherine Elizabeth Wood and had travelled before them to Texas (1852) from Heard county GA where they settled first in Bosque Cty.TX and later moved to Whitney in Hill County TX. I have the original family bible that came with them from Georgia to Texas. Any information on the Griffin families associated that lived in Talladega, Coosa, Bibb Cty and Perry Cty is appreciated. These Griffin families moved back and forth between Georgia and Alabama for a while before moving on to Texas...some say because the Frt. Mims incident had so frightened them. Please note that I am aware that their are Griffin's from these counties that are both white and African American and I am interested in hearing from both/all.

Did your cousin test with the Griffin project through FTDNA? There are over 170 Griffin men in the project. If so are there no matches? There is a Samuel born about 1815 in either NC or TN.
Billie

Madison Griffin was my great grandfather. I grew up hearing many family stories about this man & would love to find a photo of him!
George, son of Madison's second wife, was my grandfather.
When I was a child my father took us to Arkadelphia to see the houses Madison had built. Wonderful history!
