I am trying to sort out all of the Griffis in Bradford County, FL. This Wess B.(West, Westbery) Griffis was the son of Richard and Easter Griffis. He is listed in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census with them. Who did he marry, when did he die?

Re: GRIFFIS from Pennsylvania

Margie-

I have a possible lead for you, but is only a guess to research and investigate further.

I have details on a Clarence Hess Griffis Born 11/13/1849 in Philadelphia, PA, Died 8/15/1911, who had 13 Children (7 of whom died young), who most likely would have named one of his children after himself. Perhaps your Clarence? Also, the above Clarence's father owned a Coal business at the S. Philly, PA Navy Ship Yard, so that is an interesting coincidence with your Clarence working there, don't you think?

Clarence H. Griffis married Elizabeth S. Ashworth 7/28/1872. His father was John Limeburner Grffis, 10/14/1804 - 4/2/1879, who I am related to, by way of one of Clarence's older brothers, Montgomery P. Griffis.

If you think this is a correct link, please contact me for more details if you wish.

Best regards,

Mark Griffis

I lost track of all of Uncle Grady's kids...knew them up through maybe Frankie. I was in town this past week to visit my brother in Merritt Island, and was able to see Ricky (now referred to as Grady).

My mom was Violet, daughter of Nola and Nancy Griffis. She died Dec 2, 1971. There were 9 in our immediate family.

Someone told me that Uncle Nola has a daughter named Patsy who runs a hair salon in Cocoa. She attended the funeral for my sister, Ramona recently. She is working on a family tree and was interested in getting in touch with family. Anyone know how to contact her?

Re: Griffis/Minton Connection, Pulaski Co,KY

Hello. I am not sure how this family ties into my family, but I bet it does. In my research, I have found a William Henry Harrison Minton (1841-1931) who married two Griffis'. The first was Emily Griffis (1830-1909), the daughter of Samuel Griffis (1812-1870) and Lois Martin (1808-1887). The second was a much younger Canzada Griffis (1886-1981). Canzada was a great niece to William Minton's first wife Emily Griffis. William Minton was 78 when Canzada was 33 in the 1920 in Scott TN. I beleive this is correct, because I can trace him in several census records (with Emily as a wife in 1870, 1880 and 1900, and then with Canzada as his wife in 1910, 1920 and 1930, with the correct age spread in all years).

Hi! I am trying to find out where I come from! So here is what I have so far... Paternal Side:
My great grandparents are Manning Griffis (born Jan 15,1830 in GA) and Martha Samantha Futch Griffis (born Jun 30, 1845 in Columbia FL). My grandparents are Nola Griffis (born July 25,1883 in Shiloh Brevard County FL) and Nancy Matilda Davis Griffis (born in 1891 I think). Their children were Sadie Griffis (1907-1985), Henrietta Griffis (1909-1952), Bennie Griffis (1914-1964), Lucille Griffis (1922-1966), Bessie Griffis (I dont have any info on her just that she was in their household during a 1930 census), Grady Griffis (my dad) (1927-2002)... Plus I think one of their nieces lived with them Violet Griffis (1926-1976) her parents were Henry Manning Griffis and Annie Jane Lawhorn Griffis. Hopefully someone out there will be a relative!!
Michelle Griffis

Hi...
I have been looking up my family and I know that I have an aunt Lucille. Her father was Nola Griffis and her mother was Nancy Griffis. One of her brothers was my dad, Grady Griffis. The info I have on her is she was born in 1922 in Titusville according to the records search I did. Maybe this is the same person?
Michelle Griffis

Lucius, Caroline and Rebecca Griffis

I am trying to find the roots of my 2GGF, Lucius Griffis, b. abt 1838-39 in (Wake Co.?) NC. I believe Lucius was the son of Caroline Griffis (b. abt 1819-20 in NC). This Caroline married Anderson Nicholson in 1848, Wake Co. I also believe Lucius to be the grandson of Rebecca Griffis (b. abt 1794 in VA), who was head of her own household in Wake Co., NC in 1820, 1830 and 1840. Rebecca was with a Snellings family in 1850. Rebecca may have been the widow of a Joshua Griffis. NC marriage bond records show a Joshua Griffis and Rebecca Griffis married in Wake Co., 1814. Any help with this family would be appreciated. I can be emailed at bronyraurfriends@yahoo.com for replies. Thank you.
Would you mind telling us who the "Swamp Griffis" are? I decend from the line of Samuel Griffis who came to Georgia with his brother John and their Uncle Charles Griffis. Samuel and John stayed in Georgia. Samuel's sons James and John moved on down to New River, Florida. It is my understanding that John's children moved to Alabama, Louisiana and Texas.

The Jacob Griffis I am working on now is the one born about 1845. Older brother, Isam, born about 1835, sisters Margaret, born about 1943, Mary, born about 1841 and Sarah, born about 1847. Their mama was Elizabeth LNU Griffis, born about 1815. I don't know if Elizabeth was born a "Griffis" or could her maiden name been "Davis?" I remember that there was a Elizabeth Griffs listed on a census record as "WD." I could be confused and it wasn't this Elizabeth. I do stay confused sometimes with my Griffis Clan.

Maybe you know something about this family???

Thank you,
Linda J Griffis
If God brings it to you, He will take you thru it.
http://journals.aol.com/momsfirstscreenn/FAITH/
http://journals.aol.com/momsfirstscreenn/MYGENEALOGYPAGE/
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/g/r/i/Linda-J-Gri...
http://abrokenlimb.blogstream.com/

Hugh, Thank you so much for explaining the "Swamp Griffis." I know we had some Griffis kin living in the Okeefenokee area at one time. Rebecca Griffis' husband, George Lee moved there after Rebecca died in 1882.

Yes, they came from Orangeburgh District South Carolina. I have only been able to go back to Josep Griffis, married Margaret Hutto and his brother, Peter Griffis, married Anne Hutto sister of Margaret. They were the daughters of Issac Hutto and Margaret Von Stern. Mr Gene Barber of Baker County, told me that my Aunt Sadie told him that orginally our Griffis' came from Wales.

When I started researching my family line back in July 2001, I tried contacting Bruce Griffis don't think I ever got a response from him. Of course I really didn't know what I was doing at that time and didn't ask the right questions I am sure. Peaska was trying to help me tie my Griffis' with her Northern Group but she passed away before we could do that.

Linda J Griffis
If God brings it to you, He will take you thru it.

Griffis/Minton Connection, Pulaski Co,KY

Hi,I have have been researching the Minton name for my Dad who was born in Pulaski County Ky. His father was John J Minton, also born there in 1866. My Dad remembers an Aunt whose name was Melissa Haley, but who everyone called "Lissie." She was born 7-10-1870 in Pulaski Co. and died at Sloan Valley 5-30-1935. John J and "Lissie's" Mother was Margaret "Pegga" Stephens Minton. When "Lissie" married Thomas Ballou in 1927,on the marriage license, her parents were listed as Sam Griffis and Pegga Stephens. The story told down thru the years was Margaret "Pegga" kept house for "Old Man Griffis" around the Somerset area.Has anyone else come across a Griffis-Minton connection? On the 1870 census for Pulaski co,the Griffis and Minton families are all living in the same general area. Any replies can be posted here or can email me directly. Thank You :)

Linda- as I am sure you know the highest concentration of the surname in the world is concentrated around the SW GA NE FL line. I grew up in Georgia and even in the Northern part of the state people always asked if I was from down there. There was a much noted Okeefenokee guide named Griffis and some famed honey growers also down there. We would respond that they were the "Swamp Griffis" and we were from Alabama.

Your relating of Samuel and brother goes to what I had heard as why there are so many in that area. Did they come from SC? Mine came from upstate, near Clemson and that is as far as I go- the name was not spelled that way in the 1800 & 1810 census- I got tipped by finding that John witnessed a deed in 1803 as "i-s" not "th".

I cannot help with your Jacob. I have not found that much pre-revolution. Bruce Griffis has traced his from Shropshire England to Tidewater VA in the md 1600's and DNA precludes me from that group. There was a large group from Wales to PA also in the early 1700s. As you say, it can get confusing.

YIC

Hugh Griffis

If this is Jacob from Independence AL He is the son of John and Katerine Griffis who moved there from Pendleton District SC where they are in the 1800 & 1810 census as griffith. Jacob married Mary Adair their son John F. was mortally wounded at Missionary Ridge. Other son James Henry married Laura Farr. These are my ggparents`

While it has been my understanding that the S.GA-N.FL line came from some brothers from SC, I have not been able to trace John-who moved from SC to AL past 1800. I would love for some male of your line to do the familytree DNA test. I did and had the same group as another Griff who had a John Griffis from VA that matched age of this John. However, we did not have a close generational match which excludes a connection. Jacob had several sisters and one older brother, John A. Malachi, who moved to Texas and started a mill before the War (btweenstates). He had several sons. My cousin claims there was some relation between us and the "Swamp Griffis".

My name is Joseph Willis McClaine, son of James Ivie McClaine and grandson of Willis Lee and Adeline (Griffis) McClaine. How can I be of help to whom? I have researched this family with the help of Sue Lynn Williams. Berry L. Griffis was the father of ten children, and his wife was named Sarah "Sula or Sular" Helen A. Jordan. They are both buried at "Cow Creek" Church Cemetery in Echols County, Georgia. She had a brother and a sister along with her mother Adaline (Bennett) Jordan that lived in or near Sanford, Florida.

Joseph McClaine
