I have not finished vetted this part of my family tree, so I offer the following as hints and not facts. My trail goes soft working backwards from Martha Brindley (b 1825, m Arthur Clark). Her birth certificate lists Joseph Brindley as her father. One of the Joseph Brindley's (b 1788-1797) m. Elizabeth under which many children are listed. all are born in Staffordshire, but some in Boon Hill and others in St.James. Henry is one of the names. Knowing stories of Henry's father's occuapation will help immensely in tracking down the correct one. One was a potter, one a farmer, and one I have yet to interpret the listing.

Re: Update on Edward Griffith/Griffin and Pengruffwnd/Pengriffin

As promised last April, I have uploaded eleven years of work on the Pengruffwnd/Pengriffin and Edward Griffith/Griffiths/Griffites/Griffin of Flushing families to my new Rootsweb site.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~theresagri...

Here you'll find information on the deaths and wills of Johan Pengruffwnd, and his sons, Edward and John who were enumerated in Lewys Dwynn's 1613 Visitation of Walton West, Pembrokeshire, Wales, as well as documented evidence which either supports or refutes previously published Griffin family histories.

One of the most interesting is the proof that Edward Edward and Sgt. John Griffin of Simsbury, CT did not share a common blood relative within 10,000 years!

You'll also find a link to Paul Jennings Griffin's new Rootsweb website which includes his Annotated Bibliography and Griffin Family Tree which was offline for about six months.

Please stop by and drop me a line. I look forward to your comments.

Theresa Griffin

The last "sighting" I have of my Hugh Griffiths is a 1835 Liverpool city directory which lists his address as 11 Downe St. Prior to that I have him at William St./Circus St. (1832), Thurlow St. (1829-32), and Redmond Place (1826).

On the 1841 census his wife Margaret is on Lower Thurlow Street with two daughters Ann and Caroline plus a boarder James Gray (who eventually marries Ann-they are my ancestors).

I know your frustration! My GGG grandfather made it through C1841 in Liverpool but not C1851 - this deprives me of his birthplace although said to be Truro Cornwall. This is my brickwall.

I found a burial record of a Hugh GRIFFITHS 15Dec1835 which you can find at BMD registers (non-parochial)RG4/3121 as follows: http://www.bmdregisters.co.uk
Here are the entries (I have the page image if you like - send me an email address):-

Date of Interment: 15 December 1835
Running No: 10797
Grave No. 6293 ! communal grave shared by others
Name of deceased: Hugh GRIFFITHS
Parent’s names: (blank)
Last residence: Smithfield Street, Liverpool
Age: 48
Disorder: Decline	!Reason for death
Officiating Minister: John Bruce
(note: 1832 Pollbook lists a “BRUCE,REV. JOHN,CLERK,RAKE LANE,EVERTON,E & T,”)

Source: RG4 3121 - Register of Burials at the Necropolis Burial Ground or Low Hill General Cemetery for all Denominations at Everton in the Parish of Liverpool, Lancashire from 1825 to 1837.

Smithfield Street is very close to Eaton Stret where a Hugh GRIFFITHS shoemaker I have been researching had lived. Do you have any more clues, perhaps parents or children or spouse etc?

Hi there, I have been researching my Griffiths family in LIverpool for about six years now. One of the branches is of William Griffiths who married Martha Crompton or Crimpton or Crampton in 1804 at St Paul's in LIverpool. Is this any connection to you?

Alternatively, I am also researching a William (Slater) Griffiths, a slater & plasterer who married Julianna Jones in 1805 at St. Peter Liverpool but also lived before and after this in Bangor Wales, where they were both born. They also had a son William whos was a slater & plasterer. This family is well documented now. There is also a connection via their daughter Margaret Griffiths who married a John Griffiths, s/o Hugh Griffiths & Jane Ireland, who married at St.Nicholas Liverpool in 1800. Their son Hugh b1801 died in 1802, unless there was another? Does this match to yours? Regards Garry

The period he mentioned was way back in the 1700's as I recall and the family came from Cheshire somewhere in the Malpas area. That is where my Candeland's were from.
I am still looking into the Griffiths family and probably Thomas had siblings which I haven't yet discovered so we could still have a connection.

Olwen.

Dr. Griffiths graduated from Kentucky School of Medicine in 1852. He was the third son of The Rev THomas and Anne G, who came to the US via the SS Lehigh that landed in Philadlephia on June 23, 1841. He was one of seven chldren who came with his parents, and his sister, Sarah was born in 1846.
He was in Cincinanti from 1853 untl 1856 and I suspectthat he was not very successful. He went to Mt Waahington, in Bullet County.KY, south of Louisvile. He was medical director of MG Phiip Sheridan from 10/6/1862 until 6/18/1865.

His son died at the age of 2. The other two children survived. Kate was from Augusta, Georgia, this is how she nameed her children. She died in 1867 - cause and ocurse unknown.

He had a stroke at the age of 36 and had a subsequent left sided paralysis. He also lost vision.

have additional information.

John Steiner jcsneuro@fuse.net
A little late in picking up your post of September 2008.

My Great Grandfater was Henry R Griffiths, born 1821 and baptised 16.12.1821 at St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol. Parents were John Griffiths and Mary. This information came from the Bristol Parish Records. I know Henry's Father was John, the information was on Henry's marriage Certificate in 1842 when he married Elizabeth Land in Croydon, Surrey. By this time John had died. I have a possible death for John, aged 74, a Schoolmaster, in Merton, Surrey in 1838. Seems that John taught at the Bermondsey Poor Children establishment in Merton. Unfortunately the Death Certificate does not provide any relative details.

Does any of this ring any bells?

Brian Griffiths

Update on Edward Griffith/Griffin and Pengruffwnd/Pengriffin

We have located documented evidence that the Edward Griffith (aka Griffin)who boarded the Abraham in London for Virginia on 24 Oct 1632, and died in Flushing, New York, after 1698, is NOT the Edward Pengruffwnd/Pengriffin listed on Lewys Dwnn's 1613 Visitation of Walton West, Pembrokeshire, Wales.

The Pengruffwnd family had changed its name to Griffithes (aka Griffiths and Griffith) by 1616. They lived on a farm between Coxall, Shropshire and Coxall, Bucknell, Herefordshire, while Richard Pengriffin was serving as Parson at All Saints Church in Walton West, Pembrokeshire, Wales. Richard, who was shown living with his wife Agnes (Powers) and sons Henry/Harry, Richard and Thomas, left the position at All Saints Church by 1619.

Shortly, I'll post our findings on Paul Jennings Griffin's new website. His site moved to:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~griffingri...

I'll post a message here when the update has been completed.

We are now looking for a homeland and parents for our Edward Griffith who was 33 when he left London and who settled in Queens County, New York. If you are in the UK and are missing an ancestor known as Edward Griffith(s) aka Griffin(s) and some times Griffen(s), please contact me.

Theresa Griffin
Southern California
Hi Ross,
Hello mate, it is great to hear from you and Olive, and yes I am Olive's cousin. I am so sorry to hear about Sandy because we used to send him and Margaret a card at Christmas. They kept in touch with us to let us know how Nell and Jim where getting on. As you know Aunty Nell (Helen) used to come down to mums in the summer and also when I worked for BT I used to ring her every night! Pam (your bridesmaid) has talked about you and Olive many times but I never met you, although, I met Olive once or twice, it was more Pam who was in touch with you. I know that you were at sea most of your life because Aunty Nell told me. About two years ago we were caravanning up near you, we went to where mum and Aunty Nell was born at Monikie. We actually went to the house where they were born, it was like a Bothy (is that the right word?), like a small bungalow. We went to Invergowrie and Longforgan and noted all the gravestones. We even went to see where uncle Jim lived and the warden was so nice she gave me some photo's of Jim. It was nice visiting the old places I remember as a kid. I do hope you, Olive and your family are well and please write back when you get the time. My direct email is Sciara67@btinternet.com. Thank you for getting in touch I am so pleased I can't wait to tell Pam,

kind regards,

Ed
DNA testing cost has dropped again and the GRIFF project is up to 161 members

In case anyone you know is interested, they have dropped the price of Y chromosome DNA testing at FamilyTreeDNA.com - at least for the month of July to $199 for 67 markers. The cost for 37 markers is only $119, but if any interested parties can go the extra 80 bucks it is well worth it to make matches much more precise. The "GRIFF" project is now up to 161 submitters of DNA for Y chromosome testing from all over the world and includes surnames Griffin, Griffiths, Griffith, and may other surname variations. The primary "Griff" DNA project site is:
http://www.griffith.dna.rdgriffith.com/

From which you can join by the link at the lower Left that states "click here to join" - thanks, Allan Griffith, Bloomington, Illinois, USA - magrif@verizon.net

Hi Jan,

I haven't come across any of my Griffiths family in Ellesmere Port. However I see that you have Allmark's in your tree. Do you by chance have Candeland's as well? I ask because I've had correspondence from an American whose Allmark's (originally Hallmark) were connected to Candeland's. I have Griffiths married to Candeland.

Best wishes,
Olwen.
Hi there,

yes I do have Griffiths from Chester. I don't have any street names though. I do have names the same apart from Ellen. The earliest Thomas Griffiths I have so far was born in 1806 at Lea, Backford, Chester. Is this helpful?
Yes, Jeffery, we are related..

All of those people you mentioned are those in my line...

Wesley was my great Grandfather (I am named after him), Elva is my Aunt, Dolores was my Grandmother and my Mother, Dolores' daughter, is Donna (Murray) Targett. If you have any info that goes back farther into the family tree, I would be grateful if you can send it along...

thanks, Shawn

( SWTargett@yahoo.com )

JAMES PRYCE GRIFFITHS

I am looking for anyone who is tracing the family of either James Pryce Griffiths who married Elizabeth Matthews in Knighton, in 1909. James was a Farmer and Elizabeth a Farmers Daughter. She was born in Gladestry in 1883, I beleive James was born in Abbey Cwm Hir in 1876. The mystery being I have found another James Pryce Griffiths born in AbbeyCwm Hir in 1866, married to Ellen Keziah Small living in Hereford. Both these Gentlemen (might be same person) have children called Ivor and Herbert (born in different years but strange coincidence. Would love to hear from anyone tracing either family.
kara

Hello,
I noticed that you said you had some GRiffiths' from the Chester area. I have Robert Griffiths and his family William, Robert, Ellen and Sarah. They lived around the Milton STreet area of Chester. Do you recognise any of these names. Would love to hear from you if you do.

My cousin also has a Griffiths from Olave Street, Chester in his family so again if you recognise this I would be happy to pass this on.

Best wishes
Jan

Hello,
Thank you for replying. The following is what I have so far on my grandmother's family.

Robert Griffiths b. abt. 1850 Ellesmere Port according to 1901 census but living in Chester. Son of Robert GRiffiths but I don't have his wife's name.

He married Isabella Taylor in 1876 in St. John's Church, Chester.
Children were:-

William b. abt. 1878 in Chester

Robert b. 1882 in Chester d. 1955 in 40, Milton St. Chester
(this is my gt. grandfather).

Ellen b. abt. 1887 in Chester

Sarah b. abt. 1890 in Chester

Robert b.1882 married Emily Allmark in in 1902 in St. John's Church, Chester.

Their children were:-
George b. 1904
Emily b.1907
Annie (my grandmother) b. 1912
Ada b. 1915
Percy b. 1921

I believe Ellen married a James Shone but have not verified this as yet.

I note that your Thomas was born in 1806 at Lea, Backford which I presume could be in the Ellesmere Port area for Civil Registration.

I do have more information and if these names are also part of your family then do let me know and I will willingly share all my information with you.

With very best wishes.

Jan
