William Grigg's children, 1769

On 22 September 1769 William Grigg's five children, Peter, Mary, Elizabeth, Martha and Susannah Grigg were "bound out" by order of the Amelia County Court to the Nottoway Parish Church wardens, "As William Grigg was unable to care for them." (Book 9, page 6.)
I would very much appreciate hearing from anyone who has further information on the history of these Grigg children after their placement with Church wardens in 1769.
fishing for a misspelled surname

hello out there. Admittedly my last name is spelled G-r-a-g-g, however, I am looking for information to see if those who took down names in Censuses might have misspelled the last name and wrote an "a" rather than an "i". After 1880 my great grandfather Daniel Marion Gragg lived in Kansas. He was born in Illinois in 1863. His Father, Robert Gragg was born in Ohio and both his parents were born in Ohio too. I have been trying to tract down Robert and his parents to contiue on toward the east coast. I have a theory that Robert changed the spelling of his last name or it was changed for him somehow. I am new to the search for the ancestors by the variation to the spelling. Below is the information (name and birth year) of my ancestors. If anyone has some ideas please respond by writing to me at daryl_gragg@hotmail.com thanks.
Grandfather Robert Adrian Gragg b. 1885, Kansas.
Great grand F Daniel Marion Gragg b. 1863 Illinois
Great Great gf Robert Gragg b. 1830 Ohio

If there is any more info someone needs to connect please write to me and ask. Thanks so much.

Daryl

Hilda Grigg from Auckland New Zealand

I am trying to find what connection Hilda Grigg, who lived at 2 Malvern, Road, Te Papapa, Auckland New Zealand, in 1947, had with my McDonald family, who lived in Middle Indigo, Victoria, Australia. I have found photos of Hilda & her daughter, with my great great aunts & great great uncle, Robina, Jessie & George McDonald. The photo was taken in Australia about 1950. There are also lovely messages written by Hilda in my great great aunt Robina's autograph book. I have a great aunt named Hilda Cheesley--her mother was an older sister of Robina, Jessie & George--and as no-one else in our family was namred Hilda, maybe she was named after Hilda Grigg. Grigg would have been Hilda's married name. If you think you can help, please feel free to email me on nette_50@hotmail.com Many thanks, Jeanette Bonnici (nee Henderson) Cronulla, NSW, Australia

Dr. Edward Doughty Grigg

From Goodspeed's 1888, Lawrence Co., Missouri:
Dr. Edward Doughty Grigg is a native of Missouri, born in Shelbyville, Shelby co., December 10, 1838, and is the son of Edward D. and Amanda M. McFarland Grigg, and grandson of Jacob Grigg, a clergyman of the Baptist faith, who emigrated from Wales and settled in Virginia prior to the Revolutionary War. He here reared his three sons, of whom Edward D. Sr., completed his medical studies and led a
nomadic life. Dr. Edward D. Grigg Jr. completed his studies at Laporte, Ind., and after practicing in that State for some time, came to Missouri in 1857. He made a settlement at Neosho, and practiced his profession at that place until the breaking out of the late war. He then served as assistant surgeon of the Tenth Missouri Regiment under Gen. Price. He entered the field as first lieutenant of Company A, Gen. M. M. Parson's command, and served with honor and bravery until the evacuation of Corinth , when he came home to recruit. He
was taken sick, and afterward went to Illinois, where he taught school for about eighteen months. He then returned to Neosho. He was married in Jefferson County, Mo., to Miss Mary Susan, daughter of F. G. Duvall {see sketch elsewhere} and this union resulted in the birth of five sons and one daughter: Dr. George P. (a physician), HOrace, Pierre, Felix, Clifton and Mary. Dr. Grigg is a member of the
Masonic fraternity, and he and his wife are members of the Baptist Church.

[Some comments: E.D. Grigg Sr. - nomadic life means he was married at least 5 times from information I've received. Other recent information sends the Grigg researcher to MD, Cleveland Co.,NC and PA depending upon which twig you're tracing in this tree - I'm chasing Sr., also a doctor, and so far I'm looking in MD, NC, PA, MI and OH. I was also curious if the reference above to Jefferson Co., could actually be Jefferson Township instead?]

For anyone interested, I've compiled several family trees for Grigg's from Halesowen, Smethwick, Oldbury & West Bromwich. They are on my site at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~plattgrigg/index.ht... . They are very basic at the moment but I will add further details as time permits.
Regards from Malcolm.

HI
I'm hoping to find anyone with connections to any Grigg's from the Midlands (Worcestershire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire). I have been trying to trace my 3rd Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Grigg. I have only an approximate birth date for her and a death date of 12 Dec 1891 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire. There is family rumor that she may have come from Wales but I can not find the link.
Is anyone out there researching a simular line that might have an Elizabeth born about this time?
I'd love to hear from anyone with suggestions on how to fine her family. I have a suspision that her birth place may be wrong.
Thanks!
Caroline

Looking for families of Edmond A. Grigg & Jesse A Grigg of VA and Wilson Co. TN

My Grandmother’s sister, Katie G. Graham was married to Hugh H. Grigg in Nashville TN 3 Jun 1881 . Hugh was the son of Edmond T Grigg b.Aug.1828.VA who apparently was the son of Jesse A Grigg b.abt.(1799-1806)VA. Jessie, Edmond and Hugh lived in Wilson Co TN by 1850 and had moved to TN abt.1830. In 1850 his family was:
Jesse A Grigg 44 b.VA
, Mary 44 b.VA
, James 18 b.TN
, William 16 b.TN
, Washington 14
, Martha 12
, Price 7
, Joseph 4
, George 4/12

Edmond T had apparently already started his family as
Edmond T. Grigg 23 Cabinet Maker b.VA
, Martha 19
, Marshal 1
(I have seen this listed in a couple of places like Ancestry.com One World Tree, but cannot prove/source the link of Edmond T. Grigg to the family of Jesse A. Grigg. The ancestry on back William 1,William2,James3,Josiah4,Jesse5,JesseA.6 seems to be widely accepted.)

Robert A Grigg had also apparently started his family as
Robert A. Grigg 21 b.VA
, Sarah 15

Most of these families are easily seen for decades in Wilson Co TN Census records and I have info on who was in most of their families until about 1900. Edmond T Grigg, son Hugh H & family, son Robert L & family, son Lafayette, and dau Mary A. had all moved to Nashville TN and lived together in the same house in the 1900 Census.

I have not done any real scholarly research on the families, just looking at original census records in Wilson and then trying to link to on-line trees and databases. But I would like to help out a current descendant of the Hugh H Grigg-Katie G. Graham family to have current information. At a minimum I need help from someone on how I can prove the link of Edmond T. Grigg to Jesse A. Grigg. Am hoping someone can help me out.
Hi
I am researching my G.G.Grandfather John Grigg. My research has led me to believe that he was born in Redruth Cornwall 1836-42 and immigrated to Victoria to work the Bendigo Gold fields. He married a widower Johanna Ryan and had 3 children - John, James and George (my great grand father) They were married in Kerang Victoria on the 17th Aug 1876 and had their 3 children in the Bendigo region between 1879 & 1882.
Johanna died on the 12 July 1931 but I am having difficulty finding information for John. We think he may have died in Tooleybuc, NSW around 1920??

I have information about a Grigg family who lived in Redruth, Cornwall in 1841.

William Grigg,40,,Farmer,In county,
Maryann Grigg,,35,,In county
Honor Grigg,,15,,In county
Amelia Grigg,,13,,In county,
Elizabeth Grigg,,11,,In county
William Grigg,9,,,In county
Thomas Grigg,7,,,In county
John Grigg,5,,,In county
Charles Grigg,4,,,In county

Sometime you can get as much information from excluding families as finding them.
If anyone has information about John Grigg or this family I would be most appreciative.

Cheers

Julian Grigg

He and his wife lived in Cripple Creek, Colorado....after Webb City, Missouri...His wife died young at 34...had 3 girls...when she died they were 6, 12, 18. Nellie, Stella, and Pauline were their names I believe....Nellie (Nell) Louise was my Great Grand-Mother and married Fred Sandford Wheeler. The mother's name was Womack, I do not have a first name for her....father was Bob Womack I believe. Mrs. A.T. Grigg had a sister named Mrs. J.W. Ritchie. I found Mr. Grigg living with a nephew with Nellie in 1900 census....the other names were George-nephew, Henry-nephew, Mary-neice...Any help would be appreciated...thanks.

looking for info about my gggrandmother Hannah Harrison. I know she was from the Cincinnati are, born in about 1852. There was a family of Harrisons , George and Louisa, from Hamilton Co Ohio, who had a daughter Hannah who was born about 1848. They moved to Dearborn Co Indiana shortly after here birth. There is a Hannah who marries Joseph Grigg in 1872 in Dearborn Co. My gggrandmother had three children, one of which was Carrie, born in 1878. I'm trying to find out if the Hannah of George and Louisa, is the same Hannah that marries Joseph Grigg, and if she is the same, if that is my ggrandmother who end up in Fowler in 1910 with daughter Carrie who marries Lew Owings in 1901.

I came to the name late, in fact I married it. But I do know that it's a Cornish name and that my husband's ancestors came from Padstow in north Cornwall. When we visited about 8 years ago I looked the name up in the phone book - nothing - and then asked at theTourist information Office but they couldn't help. and now I believe Rick Stein has turned Padstow into one enormous seafood restaurant so perhaps any remaining Griggs have crawled irretrievably back into their shells.

Mary Grigg of Bond County IL in 1850

I am trying to research the Stoops family and believe my husband is a descendent of Isaiah Stoops who married a Mary Grigg in Bond County Illinois in 1842. I believe, and have no proof, that Isaiah died in 1850, leaving Mary Grigg a widow in the 1850 census with sons John N., George N. and daughter Susan E. The census also shows a Richardson Grigg in the household--possibly Mary's brother? By 1860, I cannot find Mary Grigg Stoops at all, or Susan E. Sons George N. and John N. Stoops are living in other households--neighbors? family? I don't know. My husband is a descendent of George N. Stoops and we are trying to trace his ancestors. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Molecular genealogy

Just a reminder that our Grigg/Gregg family molecular genealogy project is still in progress. This study is looking at Y chromosome DNA to see if Grigg, Griggs, Gregg and variations actually show biological evidence of common paternal line descent. The data can often help find that missing connection when the paper trail gets sluggish. We currently have data on two, unrelated Grigg lines: That of Moses Grigg born about 1748, Lunenburg, VA and that of William Grigg born about 1640, English immigrant to the Virginia Colonies.
Participation is easy (handled through the mail) and now very economical. If this is of interest, please contact me for more details and answers to questions at: pelhamdan@aol.com
Dan Wharton, Ph.D
(maternal line = Grigg)
