Remington Grinnel b. 1738

Remington Grinnel (Grenal)(b. 1738) moved to the Elizabeth Islands with his parents in the 1750s or earlier. He is listed in Chilmark, MA in 1771. He had several children by his unknown 1st wife in the 1760s. The grave stone of one of his decendents, born 1805, states the decendent was "of indian decent". This unknown wife seems the best candidate for the indian blood. What resources are available to help me investigate this.

Good luck and best wishes.

I know that your message is 8 years old, and I don't know how this is going to get to you, but here goes. I am Laura Ricci (Grinnell is my maiden name) and I think that we are definitely related! I had this feeling that I needed to Google my dad, Robert Paul Grinnell. I don't know why. When I was a kid, I remember my dad's second wife, Pam, had a baby girl, named Katie, but I was only 5 or 6, so I didn't make the connection. Some time later, after they divorced and we moved away, my grandmother told me that Katie was my half-sister and that my dad walked away. I've thought about you, often, but never knew how to even begin to look for you. If you want to contact me, respond to this posting and I'll send you my e-mail address. =o]

Re: Death of Lieutenant Charles W. Grinnell

Charles is my great-granduncle.

A full account of this tragedy was published on the April 5, 1911 edition of the Fitchburg (MA) Daily Sentinel. The obituary, with a lot of excellent genealogical information, was published within a day or two in either direction of the April 5, 1911 article.

He was the son of Robert Jason and Sarah Lucretia (Sawtell) Grinnell, and was one of 13 children. He was born 5 Nov 1865 at Fall River, Bristol, MA (cert. copy of birth certificate on file). He married Jenny M. Francis b. 1869 in NH (burial records, Forest Hill Cem., Fitchburg, MA), on 5 Jun 1888 at Providence, Providence, RI (obituary, Fitchburg (MA) Daily Sentinel--date unknown--I only have a xerox copy of the clipping). They had no children. Charles, a Lieutenant with the Fitchburg (MA) Fire Dept., died 4 Apr. 1911 due to injuries sustained while fighting an industrial fire.

Jenny died 25 Mar 1959, Jaffrey, Hillsborough, NH, and is buried next to Charles at Forest Hill Cemetery, Fitchburg, Worcester, MA (xerox copy of burial plot record from cemetery).

Grinnells in Michigan

I'm looking for info on my dad's dad, Irving Julius Grinnell he died when my dad was 2. His 2 daughters from a previous marrage died when he was 9 in a car accident. His mother (Doris Remington Grinnell Davis) had a half sister and brother from another Grinnell family Edith Stemm and Kenneth Grinnell, niether had children, but dad called their father grandpa. I remember as a little girl some family get togethers in Ioina and Grand Ledge. And Doris and Irving are buried outside of Portland. Our family moved to Alaska in 1969 so I have no idea what has happened to any of them. I do remember a family called Jenkins that we use to visit they had 2 little chihuahuas and 1 son that I know of. It was a long time ago, I'm 54 now with my own grandkids and since I love history I've been sharing what I know of Jonathan and Abigail. I know Edith had some confederate money from someone on her side of the Grinnell family and I'd like to know who that was, since I love Civil War history the most. Can anyone help me?

In researching my THOMPSON line, I came upon this marriage certificate, for my Sarah Thompson. Thomas and Sarah were married 23 May, 1852 in Rose Twp. Oakland County, MI.

Sarah is the daughter of Robert Thompson and his wife Surrissa (several spellings for her name are documented) Lockwood Thompson. Other children were: Polly, (Sarah-her place in line), Joseph, Smith and Ellen.

The Thompson family lived in Oakland Co. moving here from Gaines Twp. Orleans Co. NY. After the 1850 census for Oakland Co., the majority of the family can be found in Marcellus Twp, Cass Co. MI.

I can find nothing on either Thomas or Sarah Ann Grinnell.

Does anyone know anything on this couple?

Thank you.

The latest one has some awesome pictures of the churches in England where Rose and matthew got married (one of the churches). I haven't been to RI. Would you so kind as to send me some pictures? Have you gone to any reunions? Last year it was in Massachusetts which is supposed to be the beginning of the Grinnell family. Hope to hear from you soon.

Bonnie Schneiderman

My greatgrandfather Harry was killed in one of the Greenville, PA shops. It was either the Steel Car or the CBI plant. Another man lost a leg in the same incident. I have a newspaper clipping at home, I'll check it to make sure. He was only about 27 if memory serves me right. I guess that the funeral was held in the house that they lived in in Sheakleyville. His coffin lay in one bedroom and my greatgrandmother lay in the bedroom next door with my newborn grandmother. This has made it difficult to find any info on this branch of family.
Melanie

I am most interested in the details of your grandparents --especially your grandfather. What RR shop was he killed in, the location, and his job ? RR played an important part in the Ames family.

John Smith's one uncle died aft being run over by a string of cabooses in a RR yard.

Another uncle was killed in a head on collision with another train.

John Smith was named aft the farmer that gave his mother, grandmother, and two uncles a roof over their heads and food to eat. The family had nothing. Life was very hard.

Do you know of any other living relatives from Margarette Ames and Morris Grinnell? Sandra

Yes, my ancestor is John Smith Grinnell. I don't know the story behind the name. His son Harry, my ggrandfather, died when his daughter, my grandmother was 3 days old. He was decapitated by a train at the shop where he worked. My grandmother has been dead since 1971, so I know very little about the Grinnells, but have found the family tree in the Crawford County Historical Society and online. I have no pictures of John Smith Grinnell or his wife Addie Abbot. If anyone out there has pictures of these Grinnells, I would appreciate a copy. Thanks.
Melanie

Grinnell.

I also have an old typewritten sheet that one of my mother's cousins(Osro Grinnell) provided her many, many years ago and he states "Lewis Grinnell was an uncle to Willard Grinnell (Os's father). They both migrated to Wisconsin from PA. No relation to the W.E. Grinnell family..There is metnion of Willard E, and Willard G, but no Willard O.

She shows up in 1870 Census (but do not know which state) as being 48 and states she was born in Ohio. She has a Alvira Francisco living with her and states she is 28 and also born in Ohio.
Does this mean anything to anyone.
Hi,
This marriage between John Manchester and Mary Nichols Grinnell occurred 29 March in E. Greenwich, R.I. Her husband was John Manchester born ca. 1695 in Portsmouth R.I. Died 1746 in E. Greenwich. They were appointed guardians of the Grinnell children whose father was Matthew Grinnell. Matthew was killed, I believe, but I'd have to find that in my records. Mary Nichols and John had children of their own too. Mary was the dau. of Thomas Nichols and Mercy Reynolds.

The John who married Mary Nichols Grinnell was the son of John Manchester b. 1656 (?) in Portsmouth R.I. D. 1708. John of Portsmouth was the son of Thomas Manchester, the immigrant b. ca. 1620 and Margaret Wood.

John Smith Grinnell was my great-grandfather. My grandmother was his daughter, Gladys. I remember her telling me about her brother, Harry, and the accident. I am almost positive that Ethel, their sister, named her son after him, and that would be Harry Nesbit. Although they died when I was relatively young, I also knew Aunt Ethel and Uncle "Gibbie" (Gilbert).

Re: Mary/Diana Grinnell Stott

Here's more info on my William Stott. I don't know if there's any link with the family you're researching.

My William was born in Fairhaven, Massachusetts 18 Jun 1812 (records are destroyed, but the date comes from his gravestone). As I said in my original post, William moved to Honolulu and died there 11 Jul 1866, but his death was recorded in the Fairhaven records and he was buried there at Riverside Cemetery, next to his daughter Anna King and his granddaughter Mary King.

William's parents were Levin Stott (b 1778 Darthmouth, Mass; died 1856 Fairhaven) and Eunice Cunningham (died before 1850, but I have no dates; gravestone likely hers next to Levin had fallen on its face and I couldn't lift it). They had one other son, Nathaniel born 1806 Fairhaven and died 1875 New Bedford. Levin, probably Eunice, and Nathaniel are all buried at Riverside Cemetery near to where William is buried.

The previous generation was Levin Stott and Elizabeth Stoddard. I haven't found birth and death dates for them, but they were married in Dartmouth, Mass. in 1774. They had six children: Nathaniel, Levin, Elizabeth, Deborah, Caleb and William.

I haven't researched the Stott family back any further as yet, and don't know if any of them moved to New York. I hope this gives you some clues to work with, though.

jp

I would guess it was taken 1870's to 1890's. Connected names may be Roggers or Hill. Would like to figure out which of my Grandmother's aunts was his mother.

Grinnell Portrait

Sorry to have not made myself more clear. I have a box of old pictures that belonged to my father. They were all labled by my grandmother who passed away before I was born. The Grinnell picture is labled as her 1st cousin. My grandmother was Lille Roggers Walter b. 1867 in Neb. She was the daughter of Jacob Roggers b.1842 KY and Ruth Maple Hill b. 1851 IL. If I am figuring correctly to be my grandmother's 1st cousin Harry's mother would be the sister of either of her parents. All of Jacob Roggers' sisters that I know of have other married names, although there may be some I don't know of. Ruth Hill had sisters named Elizabeth b. ABT 1843 IL,Lucia b. ABT 1848 IL, and Ellen b. ?. Again there may be some I don't know about. Harry Grinnell's grandparents would be either George Roggers b. ABT 1809 KY and Judi ? b. ABT 1816 VA. or Jonathan S. Hill b. 1822 IL and Mary Jane Shaw b. 1826 IL. As I stated in my earlier query I would like to find info on my grandmother's aunt, but more than that I would like to share the picture with Harry Grinnell's descendants. Harry is such a cute little fella wearing knickers and a large collared shirt with a big floppy bow. I have shared pictures with cousins I have met on the internet who share the same ancestors. I feel so lucky to have so many family pictures and enjoy sharing them with people who may have never seen pictures of their ancestors.
Thank you for your response.

We have an odd one here. I am researching William Stott, born 1833 possibly in Scotia, NY. He died in 1889, and is buried in Albany Rural Cemetery, Albany NY. He married Mary Elizabeth Rogers. She died in 1876. They had 2 surviving children, Hiram W. and Howard Stott. Mary's sister is Lydia Rogers, who married John Grenelle. When Mary died, Lydia help William raise the 2 boys.

I am definitely interested in your William Stott's info.
Howdy Nan
You seem to have a handle on this genealogy.

What can you find for the following ancestors of mine.
I've hit brick walls with them and have asked several people to help me in the past.(with little help).

Elijah Wood-b=? (around 1735-50) where ?-d=2/8/1788 Gardner,Mass-m=4/21/1772 Stow,Mass to Isabel Wood-b=2/15/1750 Athol/Stow,Mass(a twin to Mary Wood) -d=5/17/1808 Gardner,Mass - daughter of Jeremiah Wood & Elizabeth Farr.

John McLeod-b=Scotland-d=1821 Ludlow,New Brunswick,Canada-m=1801-07 in Ludlow,NB to Susannah Hovey-b=1793 Gagetwon,NB-d=?
In 1823 Susannah Hovey McLeod remarried to friend and neighbor Able Pond. See land grant map for 1820-25 Able's and John's lots next to one another.
John McLeod served with the 42nd Regiment of Foot and was granted lands in New Brunswick for his service to the crown.
I have tried to find more info on the 42nd - as far as where John McLeod fought (which battles) - which ship he sailed on over to the new world to fight for the british..

I Await Your Reply
Hold Fast
Grinnell MacLeod Wood II
