Not likely, Phoebe Hyde (1663-1704) was the daughter of Samuel and Jane (Lee) Hyde, m. Matthew Griswold in 1683 and together they had 11 children. Both Matthew and Phoebe were born and died in Connecicut.
I don't know, either, but that's a really interesting thought. I'll let you know if I come on any proofs for you, if you'll send me your email address. Mine is atan44@mchsi.com.

I was hoping to get back to you because I mis-stated the source of my information. I have copy of The Chad Browne Memorial, and the information about Phebe Lee was written in the margin by one of my ancestors--it wasn't included in the book.

Anne

I've gotten more information on our family since I first posted. Prince Crosley was NOT the son of Matthew Griswold, he was owned by him. Prince was the son of a native American woman and a black slave named York. So I am not of Griswold's line. However, my children are..as it turned out, their great grandmother was descended from the governor's daughter, Ursula.
Gov. Matthew Griswold's parents were John Griswold and Hannah Lee. John was born in 1690. His father was Matthew Griswold, and he was born in 1653, his mother's name was Phebe Hyde. (Could this have been Phebe (Browne) Lee..who had remarried and then widowed?)I have no more information on her but her name.

I just came across this while researching my Brown line. Chad Brown, who came to Rhode Island in 1638, had a daughter, Phebe, who married Thomas Lee and had three children. They emigrated from England to Saybrook Conn. in 1641; her husband died on the passage...Among the children of Thomas and Phoebe (Browne) Lee may be mentioned . . . Gov. Matthew Griswold of Connecticut." That's from The Chad Browne Memorial, p. 9. (The first omitted area tells of two other husbands and more children; the second, three other "posterity," including President Grover Cleveland.). The book also says, "See Family Histories and Genealogy by Prof. and Mrs. E.E. Salisbury, New Haven, 1892.
Hope that helps!

Your Martha A. Griswold is the daughter of Joseph Willard and Martha (Alexander) Griswold. She appears to have married three times 1) to Thomas A. Walworth, Jr., they divorced 2) to ? Wright and 3) Lorings D. Jenne. She traces her line to Edward Griswold, the details of which can be found from her father in "The Griswold Family, The Sixth & Seventh Generation of Edward," Vol 1, p.233-234.

Tekla,
I can't tell you how pleased I am to make contact with a descendant of Vincent Griswold. I think I put out a query on him for the first time c. 20 years ago. I feel sure that he must have had descendants.
Unfortunately, I don't have even as much data on him as you do.
The reason I am interested in him is that I can't help but feel that he was related somehow to my Gr. Grandmother, Eveline S. Griswold. Evaline married Elias B. Walker and the middle name, VINCENT was passed down to a son, and grandson.
Your Vincent Griswold was living near Evaline and Elias Walker in Lockport, NY, before they moved on to Berrien co, MI, 1832.
Also nearby in Berrien was an Eber Griswold who may have been related to Vincent, and Evaline. There were several Griswolds in S. MI at the same time, and I have wondered if they might have been sons of Vincent.
I have been in contact with the Griswold Family Ass'n, and they have no documentation on Evaline, or Vincent, though they suggest a different possibility for my Evaline.
Could you tell me more about your connection to Vincent, and it's migration route ?
Do you have any data at all on Vincent, when and where he died, etc? Is it only tradition that Vincent's wife was Lucy Hurd?
Perhaps between us we can find some history. It would be better if you emailed me via my email address.

Julia jwritter@aol.com

Hi, I know your post on the Griswolds was back in 2002, but I've just begun working on this side of my mother's father's family. I have a Jesse Richardson Griswold (Guserold) - great grandfather - who was born 16 March 1881 in Lake Porter, Nova Scotia. I also believe he came to US in 1903 with wife Bessie May ? - born 1892 in Nova Scotia. My grandfather's middle name was Emery (1908 in Massachusetts).
Any connection? I'm really hitting brick walls with their info.
Thank you, Sally Bechtel (Bethlehem, PA0

In 1900 Salina Griswold, b. 8/1880, is divorced and living in Vigo Co., IN. Also in 1900, Salina's daughter with James L.

I have Marietta Martha as the order of the name only
because that is the way it is listed on her marriage
record to Fayette M. Amsden. In the 1870 & 1880 census
records she is listed as Martha.

Fayette M. Amsden, son of Jonas H. Amsden and Minerva
Sherwin, first married Clara J. Baker, daughter of
Nehemiah and Susan Baker, on 2/7/1869 in Middleboro,
Plymouth, Massachusetts. I assume Clara died, but I
have not found a death record for her. Fayette then
married Marietta M. Griswold on 3/11/1878 in Plymouth,
Plymouth, Mass. According to her marriage record,
Marietta was born in Nova Scotia, Canada. Marietta
died between 1897-1900. Fayette is listed as a widower
on the 1900 census and on his 1904 marriage to Abbie
Hardt. Fayette married Abbie Jane Hardt, daughter of
Jason Hardt and Eudora Hood, widow of Mr. Cummings, on
7/12/1904 in Pawtucket, Providence, RI.

Aunt Edna was Edna Idella Griswold, Marietta's sister.
She married David W. Nightingale 6/16/1883 in
Plymouth, Plymouth, MA. David was the son of Staunton
F. and Emmeline Nightingale.

Marietta's sister, Susan Elizabeth "Lizzie" Griswold,
married Robert Richardson, son of Anthony and Jane
Richardson, on 3/13/1886 in Plymouth, Plymouth, MA.

In addition to the children of Marietta and Fayette
Amsden that Coralee mentioned there was at least one
more daughter, Beatrice I. Amsden born 1/10/1883 in
Plymouth, Plymouth, MA.

Marietta's mother, Rhoda, married Silas Valler, son of
Silas and Deborah Valler, on 11/2/1879 in Plymouth,
Plymouth, MA. They had one son, James Silas Alton
Valler, born 4/2/1884 in Plymouth, Plymouth, MA.

I don't know about any Native American Griswolds in
Canada, but so far on Marietta's and Edna's line of
Griswolds I have found that they lived only in Nova
Scotia, Canada. Some of them then migrated to
Massachusetts, but I have not found them anywhere else
in Canada.

Becky Griswold
I know in one of the OLD books on Allegany County, now long out of print -- but available for review on Cornell University's digital library section, there was a Rev. Samuel Griswold who served in the Town of Genesee for a while. I saw it about 20 years ago in a privately owned book.

I found a Harriet Griswold Evans, in the US Genweb Allegany County site in the Cemetery Index. The notes say she was the Daughter of Samuel & Clarrissa Griswold, wife of Jesse Evans, married 1848, Jesse died 1879 they had 4 children. To find her, go to the county page and look for the County Cemetery index sponsored by the County historian and find Harriet under the E tab.

Hope this helps

Thank you so much for your reply to the original posters question. You have filled in one thing in which I was suspecting that my grandfather's (Chester) mother was someone other than Clara Baker & for sure knew it was not Abbie J due to her age when her & Fayette Married. That & also knowing Fayette had married 3 times according to Census data.

I have all the census data you all speak of, except the 1870 Census & of course that is where the answer was! Thanks so much for sharing. I will see if I can pursue any more of the Griswold line or not & hopefully can access some more Canadian data.

Dale Amsden- 1 Oct 2008

Yes, we have a Cora M. Griswold, b. 1892, MO, daughter of William C. GRISWOLD and Mary Jane RUBY. We show the probable lineage to be as follows:

William C. > Benjamin Archer GRISWOLD > Isaac GRIZZLE > William GRISWOLD > Henry GRIZZLE > John GRIZZLE.

Jim, unfortunately, there are no more of these publications available. It has been replaced by two newer publications of The Griswold Family Association: The Griswold Family, The First Five Generations which can be found at larger genealogical libraries or through interlibrary loan of the Family History Center; and The Griswold Family, The Sixth and Seventh Generation of Edward and Matthew.
James L. Griswold born in Richmond VA 1857

I'm looking for any information about the Griswold family in Virginia. My gr grandfather, James L (Larmia?) Griswold was born in Richmond, Virginia, on June 5, 1857. Family lore is that he was in the seminary to become a priest, decided to leave, and never saw his family again. He didn't talk much about his past. All I know is that before he married my gr grandmother, he may have had a daughter named Hazel or Nellie who died as a young adult. He married my gr grandmother, Dorothy (Dolly) Francis Smith, in 1902 in Indiana. They had five children: James L. Jr, Jimmy (died in infancy), Patrick (died in infancy), Dorothy and Carl.

I believe that James would have been baptized at either St. Mary or St. Peter Catholic church in Richond, Virginia.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have just begun to research Lawry Griswold & Ozias Prentice. Did you happen to turn up any evidence regarding your hunch?
Angeles
angelesoakes@gmail.com

Hello, I am looking to confirm the heritage of Henry Augustus Griswold (1821-1907) Bradford County Pennsylvania.

His parents are reported to be Clark Griswold (1792-1825)and mother reported Mariah Galusha (1793-1850).

Clark Griswold is the son of Joshua Griswold and Clarissa Wright according to the Barbour Collection of CT births

Henry's siblings reportedly being Joshua Clark Griswold, Betsey Griswold (Greene?) and Sheldon Griswold

But can someone confirm the marriage and connection to the Galusha connection and the siblings relations?

I am a descendant of Henry's daughter Lucy Mariah Griswold who married Ezra William Van Fleet.

Jim Bramble
bramble_jim@hotmail.com

Coralee, thank you so much for your confirmation.

Can you tell me the best venue to purchase the volume you mention? Do the other volumes have pertinent information to my line and should I be exploring those as well?

Jim
