The nice people at the Harvard University Library Virtual Collection have put on-line both editions of a rare book concerning the marriage troubles of David Groesbeck (1817-1893), stock broker to Daniel Drew. The book documents Mortimer J. Smith's trial for libel. Smith published accusations that Emma Williams had "suffered and permitted improper attentions and liberties to be paid to her by one David Groesbeck, of the city of New York, broker, and by encouraging those attentions and liberties, alienated the affections of said Groesbeck from his wife, from who he now lives separate and apart."

The book is part of a virtual collection of trial narratives entitled, "Studies in Scarlet: Marriage & Sexuality in the U.S. and UKK., 1815-1914." The index page for both editions of the book can be found at:

The book has a good deal of genealogical information in it. Groesbeck went on to married Emma Williams, and have seven children by her: Blanche, Ernest, Joseph, Claude, Harry Appleton, Herbert, and Duncan
