Re: Orville D Groesbeck

Frank Groesbeck might have been born after 1903. During Orville Groesbeck's military service in the Philippines as a US Army officer, he married a filipina by the name of anastacia. They had 2 children. A daughter by the name of Saturnina Groesbeck born 1906 and a son (forgot his name). Saturnina is my grandmother. She married a filipino lawyer by the name of Pio Reyes. They had 6 children namely Federico (looks like Orville D. Groesbeck), Isnardo, Lino, Herman, Milburgo, and Iraida. Each one of them had tons of children except my father who is Milburgo. He only had me. When I was small, my dad used to tell me that Greatgrandfather Orville was abandoned by his filipina wife anastacia when she took off with the 2 children and hid from Orville. Orville went all over the Philippines searching for his 2 children but could not find them so he eventually went back to the US. Dad also said that military records showed that Orvilled remarried to an american lady named Rose and settled in San Antonio, Texas. I think my uncle Federico researched the military records. Orville has many great grand children from the Filipino family living in California.

Groesbecks in Texas in mid 1800s

I am looking for people who are connected to the Groesbeck family that was from New York.

They names I know about are John, Abraham and a man with initials A E, (from census records). John many have settled in the St. Augestine area and run a business of some sort. I have reason to believe he eventually sold that business to Abraham Groesbeck. I think John eventually died, maybe around 1856. The Groesbecks were in business with William Marsh Rice and his brother was Frederick A Rice. The Rices were fixtures in forming the Houston land and RRs. I think Abraham Groesbeck was from Houston also or perhaps Galveston.

I received a copy of a Texas supreme court case and John and Abrahams names are mentioned among the papers.

Perhaps someone here can straighten me out with regards to their connections.

David Groesbeck (1817-1893) Libel Suit Against Mortimer J. Smith

The nice people at the Harvard University Library Virtual Collection have put on-line both editions of a rare book concerning the marriage troubles of David Groesbeck (1817-1893), stock broker to Daniel Drew. The book documents Mortimer J. Smith's trial for libel. Smith published accusations that Emma Williams had "suffered and permitted improper attentions and liberties to be paid to her by one David Groesbeck, of the city of New York, broker, and by encouraging those attentions and liberties, alienated the affections of said Groesbeck from his wife, from who he now lives separate and apart."

The book is part of a virtual collection of trial narratives entitled, "Studies in Scarlet: Marriage & Sexuality in the U.S. and U.K., 1815-1914." The index page for both editions of the book can be found at:

http://vc.hul.harvard.edu:11080/vc/deliver/executeQuery?_col....

The book has a good deal of genealogical information in it. Groesbeck went on to married Emma Williams, and have seven children by her: Blanche, Ernest, Joseph, Claude, Harry Appleton, Herbert, and Duncan.

The only Elizabeth I have record of is recorded in the Schaghticoke Dutch Reformed Church Records, Schaghticoke, Rensselaer Co, NY:

" 1782 Peter Grusbeck, Elizabeth Jiles; Elizabeth ge Nov 26; Witness: Gillberd Jiles, Margaret Cregier"

Peter W. Groesbeck is s/o Walter Nicolaas Groesbeck & Alida Quackenbush. He married Elizsabeth Giles (Jiles, Yeils) 12 Nov 1781 [Schaghticoke DRC]. I have record of 4 children:
Elizabeth born 26 Nov 1782; W. Walter born 25 Dec 1784; witness: Walter Groesbek and Alida Quakinbos {Schaghticoke DRC]; Gilbert born 20 March 1787; no witness [Schaghticoke DRC]; and Alida born either 2 or 26 July 1789 {bapt recorded as 2 July & birth recorded as 26 July}; no witness [Schaghticoke DRC]

Elizabeth Giles may be the daughter of Gilbert Jiles & Margaret Cregier. Gilbert Jiles & Margaret Creiger bp Gilber b. Mar 1 1779 at Schaghticoke with witness: Stephanus Viel & Sarah Toll. I see no earlier record in this church (I do not have all the records) for Gilbert Jiles & Margaret.

Interestingly I find a JACOB VIELE bp in 1781 recorded in Schaghticoke DRC "1781 Johannes. J. Viele, Cattrina Grusbeek; Jacob ge Aug 23; wit: Jacob Viele, Eva Fort"

Hoping the above gives you some leads.

Barbara, gr-grandau of Annie Groesbeck of Bethlehem, Albany Co, NY

There are a couple of very complete genealogies on Rootsweb that contain Stephen Van Rensselaer Groesbeck. He was the GGGG Grandson of the Jacob Claessen Groesbeck. My Groesbeck connection starts with Leah Groesbeck the granddaughter of Jacob Claessen Groesbeck. It was Leah's 1st cousin Elizabeth who married Stephen Van Rensselaer the 3rd Patroon of Rensselaerswyck http://www.nysm.nysed.gov/albany/rensselaerswyck.html

The Groesbecks of Albany NY were Dutch and go back to Nicholas Jacobse Groesbeck b, 1624 Holland d. 1712 Albany, NY. This was a very prominent family. One grand daughter Elizabeth married Stephen VAN RENSSELAER the largest landowner in NY and prehaps the richest. Another grand daughter Catherine married Peter SCHUYLER from one of the other richest families in Colonial New York. If your Ruth is a Groesbeck she is most likely part of this family.
The elusive Elizabeth is my 3rd ggrandmother. I have to assume she was born early to mid 1780s. She and Jacob Viele produced Sarah Jane Viele who was born in S. Butler NY and eventually married Orren Gardner Farrington in Walpole, MA. Orren & Sarah both died in Franklin, NH. Obviously, finding information has been difficult because of all the moving around!! Anywho....any leads on Elizabeth's possible parentage would most appreciated!
Thanks, Leslie

Your Nicholas was the grandson of the Nicholas who was married to Sarah. Harriet Maria was his aunt, though she was 25 years younger than he was!
I wondered what war Nicholas was in, as there is a flag on his grave every year. His father William also served, so I guess I thought he was too young, but he would have been 18.

Nicholas was the same Nicholas who married Gertrude Waldron 17 Oct 1766. Sarah was his second wife. He was about 75 and Sarah 42 when Harriet Maria was born on 20 March 1819. This sounds farfetched, but is documented by his will.
Nicholas drew up his will in 1821 and it was probated in 1826. He lived at the time on the east side of Turnpike Road in the Town of White Creek, Washington County, NY, though he also owned land on the other side in the town of Cambridge.
Sarah and Harriet Maria were admitted to the Washington County Poorhouse 10 March 1830.
I would be interested in what happened to them after that, if you would be willing to share info.
Sarah Van Woert, according to Barrington Havens published genealogy, though he has her married to the wrong Nicholas, as proved by the will, which he evidently didn't have a copy of.
He also gives Harriet's birthdate as March 1819.
Certainly you may contact me directly. ted_rice@cserv.net.
I have an individual named David Cady Groesbeck (birth: Aug. 18, 1840 -- death: June 7, 1924) in my family file. He was married twice. His first spouse was Nancy Hall (married on June 23, 1859 in Jo Daviess Co., Ill.). His second spouse was Sarah Burtz (married in 1870 in Fremont Co., Iowa.)

I just found a Jepthia Hall living in Wayne Township, Lafayette Co., Wis. in the 1880 U.S. Census. In the household are his wife Ann, his daughter Nancy, and grandchildren Frank and Anna Groesbeck.

At the time of the 1860 U.S. Census Jepthia lived in Stockton Township, Jo Daviess Co., Ill.

I find it highly probable that David Groesbeck and Nancy Hall divorced (or he left her) and she returned to living with her parents, who had moved across the border to southern Wisconsin by 1870.

Does this ring any bells with other Groesbeck researchers?

Best regards
H.A.
Hi Martha:

I have an article (circa 1885) which is an interview
with Dow Groesbeck. Dow lived in Jo Daviess Co.,
Illinois from appx. 1848 until his death in 1897.
He may (or may not) have been the brother of Cornelius
Groesbeck who died in Jo Daviess Co. in Nov., 1846.
Cornelius was my g-g-grandfather. If this is
a 'fit' of any sort, contact me via e-mail.

hak_jr@hotmail.com

Best regards
- Kipp -

Dow Groesbeck

Hi:

I have a pretty extensive article on Dow
Groesbeck, and I also have his obituary.
He moved to Jo Davies Co., Illinois in
1848 and died in July, 1897. He was 91.

He had two sons, Herman and David K. The
mother of both children was Mary Lock. At
the time of Dow's death one son was living in
Texas and the other in Idaho.

I'd be happy to share details. It's now
pretty certain that Dow was the older brother
of my g-g-grandfather, Cornelius Groesbeck.

Best regards
- Kipp -

Hi Phyllis:

We had exchanged some info. about David C. Groesbeck. He died June 7, 1924 in Idaho.

We had info. that hed been married twice.
His second spouse was Sarah L. Burtz. The date of the marriage was 23-JUN-1859.

Best regards
- Kipp -

Ruth Groesbeck c1758-c1826 Ulster, Dutchess Albany NY

I think this is her name. It was listed as Grosethem and for some reason I think it is Groesbeck. She married Peter Petrus Fralick/Frolich and had a son Martin who was baptised in Lutheran Church, Albany New York in 25 Dec 1786. The Frolich were Palatine Germans who came in 1710. Assume she might also be Palatine. They lived around Red Hook, Dutchess Co, Ulster Co. Can't seem to pin them down.. Have nothing on here..
