Biological Daughter of Al Groff

My stepmother is searching for the biological daughter of her brother, Al Groff of Lancaster County, PA. She was born in Philadelphia and would be about 87. She had once tried to contact a member of the Groff family, who said that the family would not be interested in having a relationship with her or her family. That person did not pass on the information until just before death. That opinion was not widely held in the family. My stepmother would love to meet her niece or her niece's family.

Hi computerwolf...

I have been trying to find out who married Garrett Groff,
(these are the Groffs from NJ) There were 2 Garrett Groff's
father and son, son married Amy Stratton. Father ???
People who have family trees show Sr.married Susanna Maus
but the DOB's throw me off, Garrett,Sr was born around 1715
and Susanna Maus was born 1808..I just don't believe they
were husband and wife. If you have anything in your Groff
book, that could help me, I would really appreciate it..

Thank you
MizCop

Hi again..
I can't remember what all I have told you. I know you're not really working on the Groff's, Sallie,Mary and Harry,
lived to adulthood. As far as I know Harry had 2 children
one who died when she was 10 or so, and his son Earl died in 1945. You were right about this info I have, Mary told my grandfather all of this, but I'm not sure when. My
grandfather was living in Philadelphia, when WW1 broke out
he joined, moved to Texas, retired with the Army and retired
in Texas....I'm trying to find Mary now...I'll let you
know....Peggy

Hi Peggy,
Gee, you have a lot of info about your branch of the family.
What were your sources? I always wonder if info comes from family Bibles as so many of the old, old Bibles do have info such as that - or some other sources? So much detail about how they all died is interesting.

You said Mary A Groff "claimed she married a Ballenger" - is that from something she had written or ???

Benjamin C. and Hannah surely had a lot of sadness with the deaths of so many children - can't imagine having to go through all that they went through. Did Hannah die in childbirth? Do you know her date/ place of birth and death?

So good to be in touch with you - gotta run -

Mrs. S

Hi,
I'm sorry I missed your call too!. I'm going to try and give you all the info I have, (I've got a bunch of papers too), and right now some of them, I can't find.
Albert Conklin Groff, I don't have any info as to how long he lived(so far)
Samuel Groff worked for a shipping co. and was killed.
Edwin F Groff, he feel into a creek and drowned. No info on
him either.
Mary A Groff claimed she married a Ballenger, (have found
nothing to indicate that,),no date of death.
Willliam died, I'm guessing from sids, His mother went into get him, and he had died. Herbert was playing around and
jumped on top of a hitching post, landed the wrong way, "
coagulated blood and vomited, and never came too", an agonizing death. Ida May, Emma, and Charles only lived about 3 months each.

Emma's middle name was Robinson and Sara (Sallie's) was Leap, I can't find any connection to those names.

They moved to Delaware and then back to Salem ???

I'll write more when I can find my papers. I do appreciate your privacy, and will keep it that way..

Thanks
Peggy
Hi,
Sorry I missed you by phone -
Do you know if Sarah (Sallie)'s siblings Albert,Mary, and William lived to adulthood and had children?

I was always thinking that Benjamin & Hannah (Pyle) Groff's children were born in NJ (since he was born and died there) - just goes to show we can't "assume" anything in geneology. Were they all born in New Castle, DE? Interesting. I knew a lot of Groffs were in DE and PA but so many haven't been able to be all put together.

I've worked on this off and on for 10 years - have 59 pages of info and plan to make it available to all the family - and not to anyone other than family nor put on the net. We're all very private people as I think you are so I'm trying to contact as many as possible to get it all together.

Look forward to being in touch.
Mrs. Strobel

Hi again.....
You did the same thing I did, I had to rejoin Ancestry. We
have talked before, at the time, I didn't think there were
any girls in the family and I was convinced that the father
was Charles Groff, Sr....not !!! It wasn't until I received Sallies death certificate and found that her dad's middle
name was Conklin, then things began to fall together.

Please keep me in mind if you find anything else.

I live in North Carolina.

home phone: 252-833-4140...

I'm usually around.

Thanks so much..
Peggy Reed

So I've found some new cousins! I have been so involved with another genealogy search that I haven't done anything on the GROFF family for a while, but once this one is published (hopefully within the next couple of months) I want to get back to the GROFF, etc. search.

Have we been in touch in the past?

I would love to speak with you by phone if possible - do you live in NJ?

I just joined Ancestry.com again after being away from it for several months.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Wow....you are so very nice to answer me. I didn't
know Benjamin had a sister, the only relative of that generation I had was Charles.

Let's see Benjamin married Hannah Pyle in 1860. They had a lot of children, I'm going to try and remember all of them.

Albert: 4/7/1864..
Samuel: 1/17/1867
Sara: 3/21/1869....died in Mt Vernon NY in 1957...she was my great grandmother. She had a child out of wedlock,
Norman Pyle Groff, this was my grandfather. He was born in
1890 and passed away in 1963.
Edwin 3/6/1871
Mary 7/17/1872...New Castle Delaware.
Harry 8/2/1873....New Castle Delaware
William 6/24/1875 New castle Delaware
Benjamin Herbert Groff 10/9/1876 New Castle Delaware
Ida May 5/22/1978 New Castle Delaware
Emma Robinson Groff 4/25/1880
Charles L. Groff 5/15/1882.

Harry did marry a lady from NJ, but I think she passed away, he then moved to NY, married a lady named Florence
and they a child named Earl, he (Earl), passed away 1945.

I can't find anymore on Harry,yet...

Good grief, I have taken up all your time.

This is so amazing that I found you again, I found most of
the information on Harry and Sallie just in the past 3 months.

Please, please if you have time, will you let me know any history you have?

I'll keep looking, and let me know what other children
Bejamin and Ann might have had.

Thank you...thank you so very much. You are such a help

Peggy
I've been trying to find members of this family for years !
Please respond quickly - I have Albert Conklin Groff born 1864 the eldest of Benjamin and Hannah (Pyle) Groff's children.
Did he have one sister Sallie who survived to adulthood. I note that all the other children died young - am I correct?
Can't wait to be in touch with you!!
I descend from M John Groff of Manor (pg 174 of Groff book 1 through his
> daughter Barbara who married Paul/Paulus Wilt and their granddaughter
> Catherine Wilt daughter of Johannes and Catherine. In the book she is
> listed as wife of George Beck and nothing else. She had a first husband
> Frederick Bonge my ggg grandfather by whom she had 7 children. I have
> this interesting family well documented and hoped to get it into the
> hands of people concerned with Groff history.
> Can you help me please. Thank you , Elaine Wendt
>

If you can find out where they are buried you could scan and post the pictures at Find A Grave and Rootsweb and then when their family does come looking for them, they will have a wonderful gift that you took the time to care for.

I'd start by getting their obits and posting them. You'll then know some other family members and will be able to find them on the census easier. If you know where they are buried, you can write to them and ask for a copy of thier index cards for anyone else with that last name and check into them. Also, post you death and burial information at Find A Grave, along with their obits and any pictures you may have. Become farmilar with the county they lived in. Also check out the USGenWeb for that area and the census at the LDS website.

As a hobby, I rescue old photos that have identification on them. Awhile ago, I obtained two photos from an auction. They're of the same little girl, taken at different times of her life. One says, "Verna Arline Groff age 8 mon."
The other one says, "Verna Arline Groff age 2 years."

Then later someone wrote: "Oct. 10, 1974. This pictures was in a box of stuff I bought at a sale at Bauvill. When we boguth the china closet this person is decesed. She would be about 67 years old. Her son lives up there. She marred a man, Mr. Brown."

I did some research on this name, and came across information in a family tree on Ancestry. Verna Arline Groff b. 1913, d. 1984. (So the person was off of her death by 10 years.) Father J. Roland Groff, b. 9 Apr 1883, mother Carried L. Sheaffer b. 14 Feb. 1883. She married Harry R. Brown b. 1909. Married between 1928-1954.

My goal is to locate family to send this to. If you wish to obtain it, contact me at: digginroots@yahoo.com

Kathy

It's a good suggestion. I've actually found some memorials on FAG that I've been able to add rescued photos to.

I currently have them on a page, and will share the URL with anyone who wants to contact me on my e-mail.

Have a good day.

Sorry it took so long to answer...we had a family emergency. Unfortunately, none of those names show up in the book. You might try to contact someone with volume 1, as I believe that that book shows more recent lines, whereas my book, volume 2, doesn't even show the 1900's and goes back to the 1600-1700 time frame.

Sorry about that,

John

Hi,

It's very difficult to look up names in the book and verify that they are or are not your relatives when you don't supply BMD dates. Luckily, the name Jesse only shows up 3 times in my book but none of them have a father named Isaac. The first is Jesse G.; b. 4 Feb 1833 to John & Catherine. The second is Jesse; b. abt. 1820 to Jacob & Catharina. The third is Jesse; b. unknown to Samuel & Barbara.

The name Isaac shows up 11 times and without a date, I wouldn't be willing to transcribe all eleven on the off chance that one of them might be your relative. Dates make all the difference in the world.

Please understand, I'm not trying to be mean. I'm just trying to point out something that might help you in the future when requesting a lookup from someone.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help,

John Wolfe
Sherman, Texas

We are a large family of 24 grandkids and countless great grandkids. We get together and have a large 4 day reunion every year in Tawas city.My mom is still alive and will be 88 years old in November. She often talks a bout your Grandpa and Grandma Frances and knows alot of the family history as I do also.I would love to help you in any ways I can to learn about the family. We have pictures and even just had a CD made.My email is Grammyb46@aol.com if you would like to contact me about pictures. My phone number at the present time is 989-624-9151 where we are living with my mom until our new home is built. Have a blessed day Madison and welcome to the family! Karen Brown

Hi, several years ago I was told that the name GROFF (as well as GROOF) may be derived from the German GRAF (as written nowadays, meaning Count or Earl), as well as GRAAF and GRAFF (mainly in France) - or GRAF may be derived from GROFF... I know that my ancestors (to my knowledge mainly in Switzerland) are spelt as GRAAF or GROOF in the 16/17 (and beginning 18) century. The name GRAF is used in LANDGRAF, etc. as well. I'm quite surprised on that rationale. May I get a copy of your drawing? It seems being similar to Swiss crests... (of course I'll translate the German text for you if necessary) Thanks a lot, Heinz GRAF

My great grandfather, Dale Derrington Whitney, owned a picture that my family is unable to identify. Murphysboro is in the area where our "Derrington" ancestors come from, and so we believe this picture to be someone who might be related to the Derringtons in that area.

On the photo is a handwritten word, which we think is "Groff", a surname which I cannot find in my family tree.

If anyone can help give any clues regarding who this photo might be, or when it might have been taken, please let me know! Thanks.

I don't think this is the Samuel you're looking for but perhaps we have a common thread somewhere.
Wow! I'm hoping you can help me. Do you have anything on the ancestors of my great grandfather August Graf born abt. 1855, married to Henrietta Wolter born 1854, who sailed with their 4 children from Hamburg on the Augusta Victoria on 2 October 1891 to America. They were from Leuschentin, Pommerania-Mecklenberg area. By 1900 they had settled settled in Akron, Erie County, New York where I grew up (not too far from Buffalo and Niagara Falls).
There was also a Paul H. Graf in Akron and I'm trying to determine if they were related in some way in the distant past. Paul H. was born 1895 in Port Colborne on the Niagara Peninsula in Canada but died in Akron in 1953. His parents were Albert Graf (1868-1950) and Anna Held (1873-1953). Albert carried on the weaving profession of his father Frederick "Edward" Graf (1828-1904)in Port Colborne. Edward sailed at the age of 16 in the Bark Arab landing in New York on 8 Sept. 1843 and married Fredericka Caroline Hoepfner in 1850 in Buffalo. Edward's parents were Johan Friederich Graf (1800-1859) and his first wife Johanna who died before 1843.

If you have anything on these folks, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Pat Groff

I am trying to determine if he was Frederick Joseph Harrington, born May 2, 1900, in San Francisco. I think he died in 1982 in Los Angeles County.

I am looking for an 1860's - 1880's Pennsylvania family headed by Abraham Groff. The were from either the Gettysburg or Chambersburg areas of PA. Abraham's wife was Lida (maiden name Gerbig) and their children were George L. (b. 1860 or 1862), Jacob, Samuel, Alice, and Sarah. They may have been Mennonite or Dunkard. George and Jacob moved to the Canton, OH area in the early 1880's and supposedly changed their surname to Grove when they migrated.
I have done research at the New York Public Library Dept. of Genealogy with help from staff. I researched in the Wappenbuch our name of Groff from the year circa 1550 in Europe. I was told our name is the Hungarian(!) spelling of Groff and there was a minor baron (Austro-Hungarian Empire) name of Groff. The Wappenbuch is extremely old and I was not able to photo copy out of it- the family crest which is very interesting and nothing at all like the stuff being peddled by businesses. I did make a drawing of it. It has a wolf head with a sword down it's throat and fleur-de-lis symbol and a pomander and the usual armor helmet at top with three feathers for "Baron". This is the real deal. I can send a copy to anyone interested in seeing it. The text is all in German.

Re: info. about Groffs in Ohio

I'm trying to locate information of Henry Ream Groff - born Nov. 28, 1827 in PA, married to Mary A. Sutherland in 1856 in Ohio. They had daughters and lived in the Cleveland area. Mary A. Groff born March 25, 1875, died Dec. 9, 1945. There was Fannie born about 1860, M. Augusta born about 1871, May S. Groff born about 1857 and Jeannette Groff born Oct. 1, 1858. Henry worked as a salesman of boots / shoes.
Henry died July 4, 1916 in Cleveland. His wife, Mary had died a few years earlier.
Jeannette Groff married Samuel D. Dodge, a lawyer. Their children were: Janet S. Dodge, born 1881, married John Garfield. Henry Groff Dodge, born 1883, married Lila. He was a lawyer. Their son was Douglas P. Dodge, born 1920.
Janet and John Garfield's children were: James, John and Douglas (and some daughters). The remained in the Mentor, Lake Co., Ohio area.
Henry and Mary Groff were buried in the Lakeview Cemetery, as was a daughter, Mary A. Groff (1875-1945).
So this was a major family of Groffs and descendants in Cuyahoga Co., Ohio.
If any of this looks familiar, I would like to hear from you. If it is the correct Henry Groff I'm looking for, his siblings remained in PA and MD and did quite well for themselves.

Daniel Groff, ca 1714-1772, Earl Twp., Lancaster Co., Pa

I am descended from this individual, among other Groff's. He is a son of Hans Groff & Susanna Kendig. Info I am seeking is the maiden name of his wife, Mary/Mary Ann. They married in teh 1730's, having among their other children, Anna, who married Christian Burkholder. These two are also ancestors of mine. Siblings of Anna include Barbara, Christian, and possibly a Daniel. Being that Daniel Sr didn't have immediate family with the name of Christian, I'm guessing he named his son after Mary's father, though I can't begin to guess who that might be. I've made a recent search of anyone named Christian who died in Earl Twp, but none of them were old enough to be her father. Family names included Wenger, Long, Sensenig and Graybill. I know she isn't a Witwer or a Holl, families who also lived in the area. Does anyone have an idea as to the identity of Mary's parents? Guessing they lived in eaither Ephrata, Earl, Warwick, or Leacock twps. Any help would be greatly and exceedingly appreciated.
